A Study Of An Indian Muraqqaʻ From Dar Al-Kutub, Shereen Mohamad Rashad El-Mitainy
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a study of an unpublished Indian Album from the Dar al-Kutub al-Masriyya (Egyptian National Library) collection, tarikh farisi, no. 66. The album consists of 70 pages, all with paintings; 36 of them are flower and plant depictions painted especially for the muraqqa(album) and 34 are pasted-in paintings from different origins. It is undated and has no signatures or attributions presented on the pages.
Indian painting is an art that had been only recently studied, although it has
ong been appreciated for its beauty and fanciful iconography. The mid-twentieth century was the beginning of scholarly interest but it …

My work is an attempt to express some of the deepest emotions held within myself; truths that seem to flow straight from my unconscious to the surface through forms that are raw, powerful, ambiguous, mysterious, emotional, and pure. In my paintings, I am dealing with the aftermath of rape.
In my paintings, I combine content with complex studio processes by using the figure, limited watercolor palette, expressive mark making, and a distressed surface.

Imagine a theater. Build one in your mind. I do not care if it is the largest theater in the universe or if it is the size of a shoebox. The theater can be an elaborate construction with gilded cherubs and priceless jewels. If you would prefer the theater to be a minimal design, imagine it that way. Maybe the theater is made out of glass or crystal. You can be all alone in the theater or maybe you are seated next to an alien, a cave man, or a robot.
As the curtain rises an enormous pipe organ is …

This is a copy of my thesis which I have written in its original form as a travel journal that I brought with me on a trip I took driving across the country. I have duplicated it word for word so that it may be more accessible to review. Accompanying this copy are a few photographic samples of different places I've been that offer a visual feeling of what I'm talking ahout thru-out the journal. The original copy of the journal will be displayed as part of my show (March 1st-5th at the Oliver Gallery) and can be viewed in …

Barbara Grossman: A Survey, Wright State University Art Galleries
Exhibition and Program Catalogs
An exhibit held at the Wright State Art gallery featuring the artworks of Barbara Grossman. Wanting to depict the nature of everyday life, her subjects deal with people interacting with their environments. Grossman is acclaimed for her use of space, color, patterns, and expression that invoke "emotional resonance" with the viewer. The exhibit was held at Wright State University Art Gallery September 12th through October 17th. It was also shown at: Lafayette College, Washington and Lee University, and New York Studio School of Drawing and Painting.

Shape, color and line are three basic elements I use to explore the possibilities of visual language. The process in itself is important since what is left on the paper are simply records of moments from which a work is constructed. These moments are mixtures of my memory, my everyday observation, my struggles and hopes. The starting point is always in between known and unknown, and it is always a new attempt for clarity. Rather than expressing what I already understand and know, I have a need to change my working methods quite often in order to expand my own …
Narrating Friendship: The Reciprocal Relationship Between J.B. Childers And Myself, James Thomas Engelmann
Narrating Friendship: The Reciprocal Relationship Between J.B. Childers And Myself, James Thomas Engelmann
Theses and Dissertations
For the past ten months I have explored the life of a deceased artist named Joseph Barley "J.B." Childers. In the graduate catalog Gregory Volk summarizes Childers as, "an alienated Korean War Veteran, who took up painting as a refuge from his troubles, and who also doesn't exist. Childers who is naturally right-handed, painted everything left-handed because of a war wound, and so Engelmann, who is left-handed, painted with his right hand, which is quite a limitation." Of course, there's more to the story than that and the writings that follow will explain many of my reasons for pursuing this …
The Orthographic Characters (In No Particular Order), Alison Christina Frank
The Orthographic Characters (In No Particular Order), Alison Christina Frank
LSU Master's Theses
My work focuses on the development of playful and absurd combinations of small creatures that co-exist in a state of odd logic. The creatures share a vulnerable, somewhat fragile, quality, yet are assigned vital force in their existence. This juxtaposition is metaphorical for certain aspects of human existence. The Orthographic Characters is the title of a series of prints and paintings I have created that form a non-linear narrative. Each piece is inspired by the alliteration of one alphabet character. The writings form a bizarre, feverish context for the characters.

LSU Master's Theses
“…motion means…passing through time and through space.” “Pushes and pulls seem to be the cause of motion.” - Richard Wolfson. “Push and Pull” is about exploring process. While trying to locate my form of expression and process, I rediscovered my mother’s form of expression and process – crochet. I decided in order to continue forward, I must explore the past.

LSU Master's Theses
A still-life is often the painted record of a complex arrangement of objects. My aim in making the visual portion of TRUE IMAGE is to turn this sort of still-life inside out. Rather than arranging a collection of objects and making a painted or drawn image of the set up, I made simple images of things and arranged them with actual objects into three larger tableaux. The subjects of the paintings and drawings are these: checkerboards, objects, portraits, and shadows. The subjects of the tableaux are work (LABOR), home (DOMUS), and church (ECCLESIA). Viewed as a whole the exhibition asks …

Japanese Painting And National Identity: Okakura Tenshin And His Circle, Victoria Weston
Japanese Painting And National Identity: Okakura Tenshin And His Circle, Victoria Weston
Victoria Weston
Japanese Painting and National Identity is the first monograph in English to address the art and philosophy of a group of Meiji painters regarded by many as seminal figures in the development of modern Japanese painting. Lead by the outspoken and widely published art critic Okakura Tenshin, this group, including artists Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, Hishida Shunsô, and others, wrestled with the vexing problem of how to modernize traditional media, methods, and styles while keeping the results authentically Japanese. Yet they saw themselves not just as artists but as servants of the nation. Their task, they believed, was to give …
