On The Polemical Nature Of 2 (Slavonic) Enoch: A Reply To C. Böttrich, Andrei Orlov
On The Polemical Nature Of 2 (Slavonic) Enoch: A Reply To C. Böttrich, Andrei Orlov
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Adam's story occupies a prominent place in 2 Slavonic (Apocalypse of) Enoch. The traditions pertaining to the first human can be found in all the sections of the book. In these materials Adam is depicted as a glorious angelic being, predestined by God to be the ruler of the earth, but falling short of God's expectations. The article argues that the extensive presence of Adamic materials in 2 Enoch has a polemical nature since it is related to the long-lasting competition between Adamic and Enochic traditions. The analysis shows that the polemics taking place in 2 Enoch involve a …

The Virtuous Cooperator: Modeling The Human In An Ecologically Endangered Age, Jame Schaefer
The Virtuous Cooperator: Modeling The Human In An Ecologically Endangered Age, Jame Schaefer
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
A theological model of the human is needed to prompt responsible thinking about and acting within the physical world. Some basic components for modeling the human as a virtuous cooperator appear in the teachings of Thomas Aquinas. When appropriated cautiously and informed broadly by contemporary scientific findings, this model provides a promising way of thinking about humans in relation to other species and ecological systems, a framework for acting responsibly, and the motivation for making this behavior habitual.

This inquiry was conducted to explore how the characteristics of our university’s religious mission are interwoven into our educational leadership doctoral program and are manifest in the structure and learning experiences that our students encounter. We examined how these characteristics might correspond to or relate to the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards that resulted from national reform initiatives in educational leadership in the mid 1990s. We concluded that the foundations of the PhD program are built solidly on the distinctive characteristics and identity of our founders and are aligned with these professional standards as well. Implications for universities …

Practicing Politics With Foucault And Kant: Toward A Critical Life, Dianna Taylor
Practicing Politics With Foucault And Kant: Toward A Critical Life, Dianna Taylor
Philosophy
This paper problematizes the claim that Michel Foucault’s work is normatively lacking and therefore possesses only limited political relevance. While Foucault does not articulate a traditional normative framework for political activity, I argue that his work nonetheless reflects certain normative commitments to, for example, practicing freedom and improving the state of the world. I elucidate these commitments by sketching out Foucault’s notion of critique as a mode of existence charac- terized by practices of the self, arguing that such practices possess political significance within the context of what Foucault refers to as a way of life, and analyzing points of …

Pointing The Finger Of Blame: News Media Coverage Of Popular-Culture Culpability, Erica Scharrer, Lisa M. Weidman, Kimberly Bissell

In the 1990s, three relatively high-profile tragedies occurred in which popular media products (including movies, recorded music, television talk shows, the Internet, tabloid newspapers, and video games) were argued to be the primary cause. This study analyzes the discourse surrounding the culpability that was placed on popular culture in major newspaper coverage of the car crash that killed Princess Diana, the murder associated with the “Jenny Jones” show, and the shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The analysis reveals patterns in the assignment of blame—and relatively more rarely of exoneration—of popular culture, interpreting why and how popular culture …
Comparative Income Distribution Patterns Among Hispanic Households In New York City, Census 2000, Laird Bergad
Comparative Income Distribution Patterns Among Hispanic Households In New York City, Census 2000, Laird Bergad
Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies
Introduction: This study examines demographic and socioeconomic aspects of the Latino population of the New York City area in the year 2000.
Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.
Results: Household income distribution data found in the 2000 U.S. census revealed a pattern of stark differentiation in New York City among the three principal racial/ethnic groups: Whites, African-Americans, and Hispanics or Latinos. Additionally, within …

New England Genealogies: The Life And Writings Of Mary Ellen Chase, William Orin Chesley
New England Genealogies: The Life And Writings Of Mary Ellen Chase, William Orin Chesley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mary Ellen Chase, one of the most popular American authors of the twentieth century, was born in Blue Hill, Maine in 1887. Her career as a writer spanned the period between 1909, when she left Maine to teach in the mid-West, and her death in 1973. Much of her literature was influenced by her early life in Blue Hill and by the various members of family. This thesis looks at the historical, biographical, and genealogical factors that gave impetus to a prolific literary output and won her a place among the leading Humanist writers in American literature during the middle …
Shakespeare's Twist: The Tragic Within Some Comedies, Susan Dettweiler Wilhide
Shakespeare's Twist: The Tragic Within Some Comedies, Susan Dettweiler Wilhide
Theses & Honors Papers
Shakespeare creatively intermingled comic and tragic motifs throughout each comedy. In doing so, the audience remembers the joyous reunions and unions rather than the potential tragedies of these plays. However, the comic portions are dependent upon the tragic portions and vice versa. The audience understands the tragic situations the characters face, yet laughs at the comic motifs causing these occurrences. The audience also shares in the joy of the characters as everything works out positively in the end.
Process, Structure, And Form: An Evolutionary Transpersonal Psychology Of Consciousness, Allan Combs, Stanley Krippner
Process, Structure, And Form: An Evolutionary Transpersonal Psychology Of Consciousness, Allan Combs, Stanley Krippner
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
In the spirit of William James, we present a process view of human consciousness. Our approach,
however, follows upon Charles Tart’s original systems theory analysis of states of consciousness,
although it differs in its reliance on the modern sciences of complexity, especially dynamical systems
theory and its emphasis on process and evolution. We argue that consciousness experience
is constructive in the sense that it is the result of ongoing self-organizing and self-creating
(autopoietic) processes in the mind and body. These processes follow a broad developmental
agenda already described by psychologists such as Jean Piaget. Similar constructive transformations
of consciousness appear …
Primal Spirituality And The Onto/Phylo Fallacy: A Critique Of The Claim That Primal Peoples Were/Are Less Spiritually And Socially Developed Than Modern Humans, Steven Taylor
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Many theorists—including Freud, Habermas and Wilber—have suggested that there are strong
parallels between ontogeny and phylogeny, and that the development of the human species has
followed the same basic pattern as the development of the individual from birth to adulthood. I
discuss this view in relation to archaeological and anthropological knowledge of the world’s “primal
peoples.” I look at the spiritual, moral, and social development of primal peoples and find
that, in almost every instance, they are more advanced than these theorists suggest, possessing
characteristics which only occur—ontogenetically—at the higher “fulcrums” of development. I
argue that Wilber’s spectrum model cannot …
