The Effects Of Auditory Perception And Musical Preference On Anxiety In Naive Human Subjects, Seung-A Kim Ph.D., L.C.A.T., Mt-Bc, Elliott Salamon, Steven R. Bernstein, Minsun Kim, George B. Stefano

Faculty Works: MT (2003-2021)

Background: The use of music as a method of relieving anxiety has been studied extensively by researchers from varying disciplines. The abundance of these reports focused on which genre of music best aided in the relief of stress. Little work has been performed in the area of auditory preference in an attempt to ascertain whether an individual’s preferred music type aids in their anxiety reduction at levels greater than music that they have little or no propensity for.

Material/Methods: In the present report we seek to determine whether naive human subjects exposed to music of their preference show a decrease …

Music Copyright Via The Internet, Damian O'Regan Sep 2003

Music Copyright Via The Internet, Damian O'Regan

Masters

This thesis will ask if it is possible to use the Internet as a means of copyrighting music. At present, the Internet is not used for the copyrighting of music and furthermore no studies have been carried out to see if this is feasible. Digital technology is used in the composition, recording, playing and downloading and storage of music and the author will research if and how these existing technologies can work in conjunction with the Internet to create a music copyright system. This thesis will research existing copyright requirements, the current technologies used in music that have potential copyright …

Uncharted Waters: "Hidden" Jazz Collections At The U.W.O Music Library, Lisa Rae Philpott

Western Libraries Presentations

Popular music has long been ignored by academic music programs and their associated libraries. If we are now playing 'catch-up' with pop music, then what is the status of jazz music? At Western, surprising collections of jazz music exist, but are hidden. This presentation offers an overview of the Simmons Collection and the CKGW Radio Orchestra collection, and highlights some of the Canadian content contained therein.

The Nature Of Sound And Music, Seung-A Kim Ph.D., L.C.A.T., Mt-Bc Jan 2003

The Nature Of Sound And Music, Seung-A Kim Ph.D., L.C.A.T., Mt-Bc

Faculty Works: MT (2003-2021)

Throughout history, musicians, music educators, psychologists, scientists, philosophers, researchers, and others from various disciplines have attempted to define ‘sound’ and ‘music’. However, it seems to be difficult to achieve one agreement on this topic since it can be interpreted in various ways, depending upon ‘who defines it’ and ‘the purpose of doing it’. My intention in raising these introductory questions is not to argue for one definition of sound and music, but to introduce various perspectives of them. More importantly. I would like to discuss how music therapists perceive this matter in a music therapy context. A music therapist uses …

The History Of Russian Vaudeville From 1800 To 1850, Alexander V. Tselebrovski Jan 2003

The History Of Russian Vaudeville From 1800 To 1850, Alexander V. Tselebrovski

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There is no significant scholarly work on the history of the Russian vaudeville. The author of the dissertation makes an attempt to explore the history of vaudeville in Russia from 1812, when the first original vaudeville was written by A. Shakhovskoi, to the 1850s, when vaudeville as a genre was finalized as a form and brought to its classic completion. Two phases of the history of vaudeville in Russia, aristocratic and democratic-raznochinnyi, are considered in close connection with the political, social, and cultural events of Russian society of the time. The first phase embraces the period from 1812, when …

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston Jan 2003

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston

Research outputs pre 2011

The aim of this research was to automate the composition of convincingly “real” music in specific musical genres. By “real” music we mean music which is not obviously “machine generated”, is recognizable as being of the selected genre, is perceived as aesthetically pleasing, and is usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal, various computational techniques were used, including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. Student musicians have objectively assessed the resulting compositions.

Cocteau Au Cirque: The Poetics Of Parade And "Le Numéro Barbette" , Jennifer Forrest Jan 2003

Cocteau Au Cirque: The Poetics Of Parade And "Le Numéro Barbette" , Jennifer Forrest

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Parade (1917) was a joint effort production with libretto by Jean Cocteau music by Erik Satie, decor, costumes, and curtain by Pablo Picasso, and choreography by Léonide Massine. It was not only Cocteau's first truly original work, but, as Pierre Gobin contends, Parade is central to an understanding of the structures that would inform all of his subsequent work. Equally central, proposes Lydia Crowson, is Cocteau's July 1926 Nouvelle Revue Française article on "Le Numéro Barbette." The essay on the transvestite striptease trapezist Barbette offers a poetics of the theater that will have changed little by the time of his …
