Almost The Same, But Not Quite: Re-Orienting The Story Of The Subject In Christina Fernández Cubas's El Año De Gracia , Jessica A. Folkart
Almost The Same, But Not Quite: Re-Orienting The Story Of The Subject In Christina Fernández Cubas's El Año De Gracia , Jessica A. Folkart
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Cristina Fernández Cubas's novel El año de Gracia (1985), about a young Spaniard who is shipwrecked on a deserted island with only a mangy shepherd for company, evokes the political dialectics of self/other found in the European's discovery and conquest of an unknown island in Robinson Crusoe. In Fernández Cubas's literary depiction of the European subject, however, she situates him on the margins of power in order to view the dynamic from a different perspective. The postcolonial theorizations of Edward Said and Homi Bhabha inform this analysis of how Fernández Cubas's castaway is at first overpowered by the other …
Gender And Authority In Almoravid Andalusia: Subjects/Objects Of Regulation In Ibn Abdun's Risala Fi Al Qada'wa Al Hisba, Sean Connor Riordan
Gender And Authority In Almoravid Andalusia: Subjects/Objects Of Regulation In Ibn Abdun's Risala Fi Al Qada'wa Al Hisba, Sean Connor Riordan

Recent strands of western historical writing understand gender in medieval Islamic societies through any of number of local cultural, religious and political discourses. This type of writing shifts the focus of historical research away from questions regarding whether Islam debases or improves the status of women--questions that tend to immobilize the subject in a polemic of competing essentialisms-and instead finds gender as having been produced in historically dynamic local processes. My thesis attempts to contribute to th.is literature by exploring how gender functioned as a regulatory issue in the context of the Almoravid political-religious movement in alAndalus through a close …
Mr. Stewart And Mr. Colbert Go To Washington: Television Satirists Outside The Box, Amber Day, Jeffrey P. Jones, Geoffrey Baym
Mr. Stewart And Mr. Colbert Go To Washington: Television Satirists Outside The Box, Amber Day, Jeffrey P. Jones, Geoffrey Baym
English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles
The political satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are largely celebrated for their nightly television programs, which use humor to offer useful political information, provide important forums for deliberation and debate, and serve as sites for alternative interpretations of political reality. Yet, when the two satirists more directly intervene in the field of politics—which they increasingly do—they are often met by a chorus of criticism that suggests they have improperly crossed normative boundaries. This article explores Stewart and Colbert’s “out of the box” political performances, which include, among others, the 2010 Rally to Restore Sanity, Colbert’s testimony before Congress in …

Media Advisers - Shadow Players In Political Communication, Richard Phillipps
Media Advisers - Shadow Players In Political Communication, Richard Phillipps
Richard Phillipps
Extract:Synopsis:It is a commonplace in political communication that the news media mediate wider political realities to their audiences. The extent to which that news content is itself mediated by others is a more ambiguous and problematic area. Perhaps because it is rarely directly visible to the public, the work of media advisers or press secretaries has become the subject of much speculation, with sweeping claims about their power. This thesis systematically explores the role of media advisers, a backroom group sometimes labelled spin-doctors or minders. Until now, this pivotal group in democratic political communication has not been the focus of …

The Tardieu Moment: Andre Tardieus Failure As Prime Minister Of France, 1929-1930, Tim K. Fuchs
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis is concerned with André Tardieu, a French politician who had an outstanding career as a journalist and a politician. After the retirement of Prime Minister Raymond Poincaré in 1929, it seemed like Tardieu would be the natural choice as his successor. He was the only leader on the Right. Tardieu formed his first cabinet in November 1929 and proposed an ambitious program for public works projects to improve the country’s infrastructure. Despite solid funding, Tardieu’s proposal never passed the Chamber of Deputies and his ministry fell in December 1930. The purpose of this thesis is to find the …
The Project Of Democracy, Alexander Keyssar
The Project Of Democracy, Alexander Keyssar
Maine Policy Review
This article is an address given at the May 2002 Maine Town Meeting sponsored by the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan. Alexander Keyssar chronicles the advances and contractions of democratic political rights in American history. While on balance, this is a story of progress, it is not, Keyssar argues, unilinear, nor one that is completed. Although arguably late for the world’s “greatest democracy,” by the 1970s the United States had achieved universal suffrage. Today, however, the tug between democratic and anti-democratic forces continues. The contest is no longer over voting rights but over the procedures and rules governing elections …

"Woman Arise!": Political Work In The Writings Of Lu Dalton, Sheree Maxwell Bench
"Woman Arise!": Political Work In The Writings Of Lu Dalton, Sheree Maxwell Bench
Theses and Dissertations
In 1872, Mormon plural wife, educator, and suffragist Lucinda Lee Dalton began writing fiery political essays and insightful poetry for the Woman's Exponent from her small community in southern Utah. Through her writings Dalton endeavors to shape the opinions of Exponent readers by working within public discourse toward the goal of equality for women. At times both optimistic and troubled, she uses the rhetorical strategies of humor, irony, reason, identification, and persuasion to educate men and women on disparities and to encourage women to participate actively in their own emancipation. She often engages in a dialogical process with other writers …
