Milesian Decrees Of Isopoliteia And The Refoundation Of The City, Ca. 479 Bce, Vanessa B. Gorman Dec 2002

Milesian Decrees Of Isopoliteia And The Refoundation Of The City, Ca. 479 Bce, Vanessa B. Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

In summary, the events described in Herodotus 6.19.2–22.1 are not only plausible, but entirely consistent with the physical and epigraphic evidence from Miletos. Persia sacked the city and killed or relocated the entire population. For the next fifteen years, while Persia still clung to Ionia, some settlers may have returned from among those who fled the sack or were absent abroad at the time. They settled cautiously on Kalabaktepe, awaiting events. When the Battle of Mykale and subsequent events pushed the Persian authority out of Ionia, the settlers looked to restore their once-famous city to something of its former size …

Confessions Of A Deceitful Correspondent, Mary Jo Kline Dec 2002

Confessions Of A Deceitful Correspondent, Mary Jo Kline

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

In evaluating personal correspondence, most editors must spend considerable time speculating on authorial intention and the responses of the women and men who were the intended audience for each letter. Tonight I shall discuss what may be learned from an archive of letters where little such informed guesswork is necessary. At least on my part.

Ade Treasurer's Report

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. There has been an increase in the general budget of $7,401, a gain of 14 percent for the year, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $60,082. A portion of this increase is due to an overage of $1,535 from the 2001 annual conference in Raleigh. Most of the increase, however, is due to the generous contributions of our members who renewed their memberships at higher levels or made contributions to the association. We can thank our members for their generosity, which makes possible a sound financial situation. Moreover, in spite of …

The Ideal Of Professional Housekeeping: Review Of Catharine E. Beecher And Harriet Beecher Stowe, The American Woman S Home. Edited By Nicole Tonkovich., Glenna R. Schroeder-Lein

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

When sisters Catharine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe published The American Woman's Home, or, Principles of Domestic Science; Being a Guide to the Formation and Maintenance of Economical, Healthful, Beautiful and Christian Homes in 1869 as both a textbook for girls' schools and a home reference work, the new book quickly became the standard in its field. It replaced, and drew heavily from, Catharine's earlier Treatise on Domestic Economy (1841). In addition, the sisters used material from columns written by Harriet, and in some instances copiously quoted male authorities on certain subjects. The result was not a book to …

Scholarly Editions And The National Endowment For The Humanities, Bruce Cole

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Good morning. It's a pleasure to be here. I am an admirer and grateful user of a number of documentary editions produced by people in this room. On a small scale, as an editor of a scholarly edition of Ridolfi's The Life of Titian, I experienced the rigors and rewards of your special kind of academic labor. The work is painstaking, repetitive, sometimes tedious. For many editions, scholars must invest decades in close reading, collaborative research, and careful transcription.

But your work has permanence and resonance. It is significant that some scholarly editions are published on paper meant to last …

A review of Music as Concept and Practice in the Late Middle Ages, edited by Reinhard Strohm and Bonnie J. Blackburn. The New Oxford History of Music, 2d Edition. Vol. 3, Pt. 1. Stolen Generations And Vanishing Indians: The Removal Of Indigenous Children As A Weapon Of War In The United States And Australia, 1870-1 940, Victoria Haskins, Margaret D. Jacobs Nov 2002

Stolen Generations And Vanishing Indians: The Removal Of Indigenous Children As A Weapon Of War In The United States And Australia, 1870-1 940, Victoria Haskins, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

As a central component of the assimilation agenda in the United States and of absorption plans in Australia, child removal became a systematic government policy toward indigenous peoples in both countries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Using the rhetoric of protecting and saving indigenous children, reformers and government officials touted child removal as a means to "uplift" and "civilize" indigenous children. Modern-day historians, until very recently, have characterized child removal in similar ways: as a well-intentioned, though ultimately misguided, alternative to warfare and violence against indigenous peoples.

If we turn our attention to the perspectives of the indigenous peoples …

Did Ah Ask You For Woik?: The Black Student, The Concept Of “Career" & Self-Entrepreneurship: Which Road?, Matthew C. Stelly, Michael Payne, Cynthia Jackson

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

For some time now, four year institutions have been circulating the myth that education equals a job upon graduation. Along with this myth, the university system makes it appear as if this equation works across the board, for minority graduates as well as majority group members. A third prong of the falsehood is that a job or a career is the ultimate goal. Very little mention is ever made of self-sufficiency or entrepreneurship. In this paper, we present a community-based model of economic development that revolves around minority students starting their own businesses rather than opting for graduation and then …

The Community College As A "Liberation Laboratory:" Toward New Visions, Values And Vigor, Matthew C. Stelly, Michael Payne, Cynthia Jackson

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

The lackluster manner in which the American high school is teaching students, combined with selective admission programs at a number of post-secondary institutions, combine to give the majority of American students an important option: the community college. Furthermore, the rising wave of conservatism and right wing ideology can best be countered if these two-year institutions became "liberation laboratories," and emphasized the humanities and social sciences, with emphasis on critical reading, critical writing and critical thinking, This paper outlines how such an emphasis, pedagogy and curriculum could be established at the nation's two-year institutions.

Moving Upstream: Voices Of Asian Americans In Higher Education, Charles F. Van Rossum, Mary E. Taylor, Pablo Bueno Mendoza, Tom Nishi, Jason Minh Alt

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have traveled the professional waterways of higher education on different streams. For some, those streams have been very tranquil, yet for many the waters have been rather choppy. These experiences have been no different from other people of color who serve at predominantly white institutions.

A Diversity Initiative Is Organizational Development: Anything Else Is Just Window Dressing, Carole G. Parker Ph.D. Nov 2002

A Diversity Initiative Is Organizational Development: Anything Else Is Just Window Dressing, Carole G. Parker Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

When an organization, any organization, but in particular, higher education, decides to engage in a diversity initiative, the leadership of the institution must be aware that they are engaging in a complex change or organization development. Organization Development is defined as change initiated by the top leadership of an organization, the change must be organization-wide, it is planned; it is designed to improve organizational health and effectiveness, and is implemented with the assistance of skills and interventions based in the behavioral sciences.
