An Orthodox Heresy: Scientific Rhetoric And The Science Of Prions., Carol Reeves Jan 2002

An Orthodox Heresy: Scientific Rhetoric And The Science Of Prions., Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A significant theoretical shift in the research community examining a class of terminal, infectious neurological disorders that includes Mad Cow Disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and Kuru was assisted by rhetorical production. The local rhetoric of one laboratory, that of Professor Stanley B. Prusiner, involved first situating an heretical hypothesis within the framework of the orthodox narrative and then audaciously promoting that heresy. Another aspect of rhetorical production in this case involved situating a new language associated with the heretical hypothesis. To promote their new lexicon, the Prusiner team evoked orthodox values of consistency, efficiency, and collective ratification. Eventually, what was once …

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan Jan 2002

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Philosophers of science typically associate the causal-mechanical view of scientific explanation with the work of Railton and Salmon. In this paper I shall argue that the defects of this view arise from an inadequate analysis of the concept of mechanism. I contrast Salmon's account of mechanisms in terms of the causal nexus with my own account of mechanisms, in which mechanisms are viewed as complex systems. After describing these two concepts of mechanism, I show how the complex-systems approach avoids certain objections to Salmon's account of causal-mechanical explanation. I conclude by discussing how mechanistic explanations can provide understanding by unification.

Dialogue At/With The Kumbha Mela, M. Darrol Bryant Jan 2002

Dialogue At/With The Kumbha Mela, M. Darrol Bryant

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Hindus and Christians have entered into dialogue in a variety of ways. In the last issue of the Bulletin, C. Murray Rogers spoke of his own move to India more than a half century ago and becoming friends with Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims. In the same issue Shesagiri Rao recounts how "under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi, a number of students ... took to the study of the Bible and the Gita." For myself, though I had Raimundo Panikkar as a teacher at Harvard Divinity School in 1966-67, it was meeting Hindus at international interfaith conferences in the 1970s and …

Viewpoint: Educational Activism: A Post 9/11 Reflection, Vasudha Narayanan Jan 2002

Viewpoint: Educational Activism: A Post 9/11 Reflection, Vasudha Narayanan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

On September 11, after doing some yoga, our nephew went to work. He was on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center, in the first building, when the plane hit the towers. Gopal was thirty two and loved music. In the months that followed, as our family grieves we are also trying to understand what is going on. Confronting hatred and violence which goes on in the name of religion, one becomes acutely sensitized to their linkage in particular religious traditions.

Sex, The Body, And Human Subjectivity In Luis Gotyisolo's Erotic Novel "Escalera Hacia El Cielo", Terri Carney Jan 2002

Sex, The Body, And Human Subjectivity In Luis Gotyisolo's Erotic Novel "Escalera Hacia El Cielo", Terri Carney

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Best known for his tetralogy Antagonía, Luis Goytisolo began his literary career under the Franco dictatorship and soon developed a reputation as an intellectual's writer. His intricate and sinewy prose challenged readers to follow his narrators down labyrinthine paths of extended metaphors, embedded clauses and erudite references. Interestingly enough, the novels of Goytisolo published in the last decade lack the narrative complexity and structural experimentalism characteristic of his earlier works. These 90s novels include: Estatua con palomas (1992), Mzungo (1996), Placer licuante (1997), and Escalera hacia el cielo (1999). Some might feel that his change to a more traditional …

Rewriting Rendell: Pedro Almodóvar's "Carne Trémula", Linda M. Willem Jan 2002

Rewriting Rendell: Pedro Almodóvar's "Carne Trémula", Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The 1997 film Carne trémula has been lauded within as well as outside of Spain as one of Pedro Almodóvar's best works. Critics on both sides of the Atlantic also have noted that this film marks a departure from Almodóvar's previous style, not only because of its tighter plotline and greater psychological depth, but also because Almodóvar's treatment of his material is more serious, less self-indulgent, and openly political. Russell Smith has suggested that the film's narrative coherence may be attributed in part to Almodóvar's use of Ruth Rendell's novel, Live Flesh (1998), as the basis for his script. This …
