Mormonism And Islam Through The Eyes Of A “Universal Historian”, James K. Lyon
Mormonism And Islam Through The Eyes Of A “Universal Historian”, James K. Lyon
BYU Studies Quarterly
In 1912 the internationally known German historian Eduard Meyer published a book that ranked as a curiosity among his writings to that point. In it this remarkably prolific scholar, who in the previous thirty years had published a monumental five-volume history of the ancient world and 274 other books, treatises, and articles, explored two topics that were so alien to the mainstream of his previous work that it baffled his learned peers. Those topics were Mormonism and Islam. Entitled Ursprung und Geschichte der Mormonen, mit Exkursen über die Anfänge des Islâms und des Christentums (The origin and history of the …
Thomas Nashe And Popular Conformity In Late Elizabethan England, Jennifer Andersen
Thomas Nashe And Popular Conformity In Late Elizabethan England, Jennifer Andersen
English Faculty Publications

Genetic Testing's "Soft Underbelly": Christian Vision And Bio-Utopia, M Therese Lysaught
Genetic Testing's "Soft Underbelly": Christian Vision And Bio-Utopia, M Therese Lysaught
Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
To distinguish genetic testing's positive aspects from its downsides, we who work in Catholic health care must begin examining these new technologies in the light of our faith tradition. In this article, as a first step in creating such a theological-moral critique, I identify: • four dimensions of genetic testing that belie its benevolent image • Three central Christian beliefs that are useful in assessing or challenging various assumptions and practices associated with genetic testing By bringing the latter to bear on the former, I hope to provide a model for how further theological-moral critique might proceed.

Moses And The Egyptian: Religious Authority In Olaudah Equiano's Iteresting Narrative, Eileen Razzari Elrod
Moses And The Egyptian: Religious Authority In Olaudah Equiano's Iteresting Narrative, Eileen Razzari Elrod
English
From the first image that greeted readers of his book, Olaudah Equiano presented the self of his 1789 autobiographical narrative as a pious Christian, one whose religious conversion meant a kind of freedom as significant as his manumission from slavery. In the striking frontispiece portrait Equiano sits with biblical text in hand, insisting-in his visual as in his textual presentations of himself-that the Christianity he embraces is the defining feature of his life-story. He responds, as Susan Marren has suggested, to two paradoxical imperatives: one, to write himself into creation as a speaking subject and, two, to write an antislavery …

Evangelical Christianity And The Appeal Of The Middle Aaes: The Case Of Bishop Charles Venn Pilcher, Graham Barwell, John Kennedy
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
In recent years in studies of the Weste,n Middle Ages, there has been an increasing interest in medievalism itself, rather than simply in the cultures and their cultural products. I Such interest has not been confined to the European countries, but has extended to others, the United States or Australia, for example, where the teaching of medieval studies has often been based on a sense of a European cultural inheritance. As part of this shift in direction, specific attention has been paid to the medievalism of a variety of enthusiasts, editors, translators, teachers and scholars. Some of the focus has …
