Video 2000 celebrates the culmination of the role of video technology and its use as an artistic medium in the latter part of the 20th century, and the beginning of its application into the aesthetics and modalities of the coming century. By presenting major video installations by cutting edge artists , both nationally and internationally known as well as regional within the state of Ohio, Video 2000 focuses on video as a tool for creative expression. Exhibition Notes, Number 11, Summer 2000. On getting acquainted with a community and making art in strange places: An Interview. Between March and June 2000, Rebecca Belmore was the Art ConText artist-in-residence at the Providence Public Library’s Smith Hill Branch. She participated in the transformation of an empty lot behind the library; worked with a group of immigrants in a library literacy program; and engaged students at the nearby Camden Avenue Elementary School; all while creating the artwork that now dominates the Museum’s Farago Entry Gallery. Following are her thoughts on questions posed by David Henry, Head of Education, The …

Distant Smiles: Painting Of Yishai Jusidman, Ken Gonzales-Day
Distant Smiles: Painting Of Yishai Jusidman, Ken Gonzales-Day
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
Jusidman's eclectic mix of imagery spans everything from geisha and clowns to nameless psychiatric patients in Mexico City. Part of his ongoing exploration of the interrelationship between "distance" and "presence," his work explores the in-between spaces that separate objects from their representations, For Jusidman, this discrepancy "constitutes the soul of painting." It could be said that he uses paint the way others use language. His command of the grammar of painting and the vocabulary of its technique allows him to work beyond a singular style. (As might be expected, many are seduced by Jusidman's Virtuosity, as an artist but also …

Dosso Dossi, Garofalo, And The Costabili Polyptych: Imaging Spiritual Authority, Giancarlo Fiorenza
Dosso Dossi, Garofalo, And The Costabili Polyptych: Imaging Spiritual Authority, Giancarlo Fiorenza
Art and Design
Recent debate over the chronology of the Costabili polyptych, painted for the high altar of S. Andrea in Ferrara, has overlooked the broader question of interpretation regarding its genesis following Ferrara's participation in the Cambrai Wars. This essay analyzes how the altarpiece negotiates the concept of "just war" while communicating God's peace and salvation. Especially relevant to interpreting the imagery are the writings of Andrea Baura and Antonio Meli, two contemporary Augustinian friars from S. Andrea, who offered new ways of reading Scripture to overcome Ferrara's historical and spiritual conflicts.
Water And Woodfiring, Richard Bresnahan
Water And Woodfiring, Richard Bresnahan
Asian Studies Faculty Publications
Part of a special section on the 1999 International Woodfire Conference. The technique of putting water into a high-temperature woodfired kiln is discussed. This 800-year-old technique is used to oxidize the environment, clear carbon, and quickly cool the pottery. It produces unique, beautiful textures and colors, particularly a rich earth-tone palette that cannot be paralleled by chemical glazes or other firing techniques. This technique was used in a Teppo-gama (gun kiln) based on designs from 12th-century Korean tunnel kilns, built on the island of Tanegashima, Japan, in 1969. The writer discusses the work of a number of artists who use …
