A Cultural View Of Music Therapy: Music And Beliefs Of Teton Sioux Shamans, With Reference To The Work Of Frances Densmore, Stephanie B. Thorne

Graduate Thesis Collection

At the end of World War II, doctors trained in the western bio-medical tradition integrated music into their practice as a means of helping soldiers recover, both mentally and physically, from the atrocities experienced while overseas. For many, music was a solace, opening up the peaceful memories of home and family and pushing aside the war-torn landscapes. By establishing interpersonal relationships between the therapist and the patient, as well as patient-to-patient in group settings, music enabled feelings and emotions to flow freely. The mind was given a structured pattern to bridge the gap of the psychological and physiological experience. It …

Place A La Litterature Dans Le Cours De Conversation!, Corinne Etienne, Sylvie Vanbaelen Mar 1999

Place A La Litterature Dans Le Cours De Conversation!, Corinne Etienne, Sylvie Vanbaelen

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Nature Of Science: A Perspective From The Philosophy Of Science, Juli T. Eflin, Stuart Glennan, George Reisch Jan 1999

The Nature Of Science: A Perspective From The Philosophy Of Science, Juli T. Eflin, Stuart Glennan, George Reisch

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In a recent article in this journal, Brian Alters (1997) argued that, given the many ways in which the nature of science (NOS) is described and poor student responses to NOS instruments such as Nature of Scientific Knowledge Scale (NSKS), Nature of Science Scale (NOSS), Test on Understanding Science (TOUS), and others, it is time for science educators to reconsider the standard lists of tenets for the NOS. Alters suggested that philosophers of science are authorities on the NOS and that consequently, it would be wise to investigate their views of current NOS tenets. To that end, he conducted a …

Encircling Linearity In Carlos Saura's Peppermint Frappé, Linda M. Willem Jan 1999

Encircling Linearity In Carlos Saura's Peppermint Frappé, Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Spanish director Carlos Saura is internationally famous for creating films where the past, the present, and the future are fused together and intermixed with reality, fantasy, and dreams. Although this practice is generally recognized by critics as one of Saura's strategies for circumventing the repressive censorship operating during the Franco era, María Delgado points out that Saura's continued reliance on non-linear narratives in his post-Franco work "indicates that his style was determined as much by a desire to interrogate the possibilities of the medium as by censorship" (375). Indeed, in an interview with Antonio Castro, Saura has been quoted as …

"Deo, Non Fortuna": Christian, Time, And Technology, David J. Hawkin Jan 1999

"Deo, Non Fortuna": Christian, Time, And Technology, David J. Hawkin

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

It is commonly asserted that Christianity is the historical religion par excellence. Its view of time is frequently contrasted with that of Eastern philosophies and religions. It is said to have a "realist" and a "positive" view of time, while religions such as Hinduism are said to have a "pessimistic" view of time in which temporal existence is seen to be mere illusion. These generalizations are often schematized into analogies about "linear" time and "cyclical" time and influential conclusions about Easter and Western culture are often drawn from such contrasts. One very prevalent argument which emerges from such discourse is …

The Love Of God In The New Testament And In The Tulsikrt Ramcaritmanas, L. Thompson Wolcott Jan 1999

The Love Of God In The New Testament And In The Tulsikrt Ramcaritmanas, L. Thompson Wolcott

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

A study of seemingly similar concepts in different cultures and religions should avoid the temptation to simply equate them or to contrast them. The intention should be to understand them within their own environment, noting their distinctions or resemblances only as these may be needed to sharpen their significance in their own settings, without judging them by criteria external to their settings.
