Popular Culture And The Mass Media In The Service Of Politics: The Wounds Of Gender Representation, Ibpp Editor

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

This article identifies and analyzes the phenomenon of gender representation as it impacts on the political application of popular culture and the mass media. Political authorities' social control and political leaders' and candidates' attractiveness are of special concern. For explanatory support, the article employs a "star" of popular music--viz., rock n' roll music from the United States--from the interlude 1956-1957.

In 1918, in the Crimea, the adolescent Vladimir Nabokov devised a new pastime: "parodizing a biographic approach" by narrating his own actions aloud. In this self-conscious "game," he orchestrated changes in grammatical person, gender, and tense in order to transform his present experiences into a third-person past, as remembered by a female friend in an imaginary future. Staging his own biography in this fashion allowed Nabokov to resolve the inherent conflict between his life and his art. On the morning of June 23rd, 1993, Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband's penis with a kitchen carving knife, literally enacting the old myth of women as castrators. America reacted to Lorena's and her husband John's situation first with horror and then with humor. Soon after the attack was made public, jokes and commentaries proliferated on television and in magazines, journals, and newspapers. Because Americans were so shocked by Lorena's action, they scrambled to represent and explain it in a manner that made the act morally comprehensible. The Calvinist Church of Worcester, Massachusetts, grew out of the frustration of three wealthy women who had been excluded in 1816 from the process of selecting a new minister, Charles A. Goodrich, for the First Congregational Church. Elizabeth Salisbury and Rebecca and Sarah Waldo found Goodrich insufficiently masculine and wondered about his orthodoxy. They rejected the decision of the church's deacons and minister to block their transfer to another congregation. In 1820, they won a reversal of this decision and founded the new church. The women had not explicitly challenged the subordination of women, but their actions amounted to this. …

The centenary of Western Australian Women's suffrage in 1999 has seen a resurgence in interest in the history of women in W.A. While there exists a substantial body of historical resources, extensive guides to these resources are lacking. The majority of general histories of Australian women and Australian suffrage rarely treat W.A. in much detail.
