Sex Differences In Television Viewing And Attention: Do Males Really Channel Surf More Than Females?, Melissa Morrison Jan 1996

Sex Differences In Television Viewing And Attention: Do Males Really Channel Surf More Than Females?, Melissa Morrison

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Channel surfing is often thought of as a male-dominated pastime; however, previously there was no objective data supporting this conclusion. In the present study television viewing and channel surfing were monitored in 44 college students who simultaneously performed an auditory vigilance task. In addition, a survey was administered to determine self-reported individual television viewing habits. Results showed that males channel surfed at almost twice the rate of females. In addition, after the first test tone they generally detected more tones in the vigilance task than females. It was concluded the high channel surfing rate of males reflected lower levels of …

Henry Iv, Part Two: A Modern Stage History, Calisa A. Pierce Jan 1996

Henry Iv, Part Two: A Modern Stage History, Calisa A. Pierce

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

William Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part Two has too often been neglected in comparison with its predecessor, Henry IV, Part One, or its successor, Henry V. In the latter half of the twentieth century, major productions of the drama have been performed only in conjunction with Part One1, and often with Henry V, Richard II, and other plays added in a Tillyardian cycle.

Although this trend has benefitted audiences who see the characters of Henry IV, Hal, and Falstaff develop over the course of several plays, it has tended to obscure one of the major themes of Part Two, that of …

Writing As A Mode Of Teaching And Learning In Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education, Julie Raines Jan 1996

Writing As A Mode Of Teaching And Learning In Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education, Julie Raines

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examines the use of writing in art education and its possibilities for use in the four disciplines of DBAE. Teacher attitudes and associated behaviors with regard to these and related topics are assessed. It was expected that some teachers would favor a creativity- or art production-centered approach to the teaching of art over DBAE. Because writing can be viewed as an academic mode of learning, some apprehension was also expected from those who favor creativity and art production. Despite teachers’ lack of training in DBAE disciplines other than art production and in using writing in the art room, …

A Survey To Determine How The Media Affected Operational Security Of The 1st Armored Division In Bosnia, Stanford E. Angion

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to survey the commanders and public affairs officers who were mobilized and deployed to Bosnia in 1995 with the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division as part of Operation Joint Endeavor, for their views about how they think the media affected their units’ operational security. Many articles have been written concerning the adversarial relationship between the military and the media, but little scientific research has been published on the effects of the media on military operational security during times of conflict. This study will build on the research previously conducted by Capt. John B. Snyder …

Applying Lmprovisationbuilder To Interactive Composition With Midi Piano, William Walker, Brian Belet

Faculty Publications

In this presentation we will show how the ImprovisationBuilder framework was adapted to our compositions for pianists and computers. Software design issues include: capturing, transforming, and realizing MIDI piano data, and an easy-to-use graphical interface for altering parameters during performance. Compositional issues include: the causal responsorial aspect of the ImprovisationBuilder output, and varying the small-scale event and gestural levels while preserving the large-scale structure among multiple performances. The presentation will discuss the compositional and performance importance of these issues and show how each of these issues was handled within the ImprovisationBuilder framework. Work on this project suggests the advantages of …

Romantic Perception: A Kierkegaardian Re-Formation Of The Appearances Via Existential Arrest Towards Conscious Imaginative Relation, Christoph Franz Dobrowolski Jan 1996

Romantic Perception: A Kierkegaardian Re-Formation Of The Appearances Via Existential Arrest Towards Conscious Imaginative Relation, Christoph Franz Dobrowolski

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The focus of this paper is to attempt to analyze how, in Kierkegaard's paradigm of what constitutes "a self", the representations of the phenomena change in the eyes of the perceiver from a state of "no self" - lacking this consciousness and active engagement of spirit-, to the moment of existential arrest, to a state of being "a self" - new and ever-growing consciousness as a result of this arrest. The primary source for this endeavour is Kierkegaard's text, The Concept of Anxiety. Methodology for this endeavour will involve explication of the text itself with nuances from other post-enlightenment literature …

The History Of The Clarinet, Georg Klaas Jan 1996

The History Of The Clarinet, Georg Klaas

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In my written thesis, I traced the evolution of the clarinet over roughly a three hundred year period (from c. 1700 to modern times). For the first 100 years of its existence, the clarinet received relatively little improvement, but it nonetheless (by the end of the 18th) century gained a prominent role in orchestras throughout Europe. The 19th century saw the most significant advances in clarinet design and construction. Through the efforts of innovators such as Iwan Muller, Carl Baermann, Hyacinth Klose, and Oskar Oehler, the clarinet was evolved to a form in which was little different from the clarinets …

Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs Jan 1996

Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The first step in the discussion is to demonstrate that ideophones constitute a word class, a relatively uncontroversial claim for Southern Bantu. The second is to show that native speakers of Zulu do not share equal knowledge of ideophones and how this knowledge correlates with social factors. Measured knowledge of ideophones is evaluated against the social factors of age, sex, education, residence patterns, and rusticity, a parameter to be elaborated below. The conclusion is that just as for pidgins and creoles (Childs 1994) the knowledge and use of ideophones serves as a reliable barometer for language typing and language change, …
