Bury St. Edmunds: A Reassessment Of Town-Abbey Relations, Michael Graham
Bury St. Edmunds: A Reassessment Of Town-Abbey Relations, Michael Graham
Michael F. Graham
These essays explore various topics in European history ranging from a study of the medieval Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds to an essay on the issue of the restoration of the Kaiser prior to Hitler's assumption of power. Enno Kraeh contributes a personal narrative of philosophical journey through the study of history. Three of the essays address literary and cultural themes dealing with German theatre politics, belle epoque opera, and Polish drama. The volume has strong representation on Austrian history, including essays on diplomacy, the Anschluss, and Austrian anti-Semitism.

Evolving Ethical Issues In Selection Of Subjects For Clinical Research, Charles Weijer

Wittgenstein, in his famous critique of philosophy, noted that the influence of an idea can be such that it alters the way that we see the world. “It is like a pair of glasses on our nose through which we see whatever we look at,” he said. “It never occurs to us to take them off.” This view of the power of an idea suggests that the interpretation of an event, and what response this event calls for, can depend upon the view one has of the world. A person who is naive about medical facts may, for example, interpret …

What Difference Does It Make To Be Treated In A Clinical Trial? A Pilot Study, Charles Weijer, Benjamin Freedman, Abraham Fuks, James Robbins, Stanley Shapiro, Myriam Skrutkowska
Charles Weijer
OBJECTIVE: Pilot study to characterize treatment differences between patients treated in clinical trials and those treated in a clinical setting. Previous studies have shown higher survival rates for participants in trials of cancer therapy. This difference is observed even after rates are adjusted for important covariates such as age and stage of disease.
DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Oncology outpatient department in a tertiary care hospital.
PATIENTS: Ninety women 18 to 70 years of age with early-stage breast cancer who were diagnosed in 1990. Fifty-one of the women were treated through clinical trials and 39 were treated outside of clinical …
The Uses Of Reform: 'Godly Discipline' And Popular Behavior In Scotland And Beyond, 1560-1610, Michael Graham
The Uses Of Reform: 'Godly Discipline' And Popular Behavior In Scotland And Beyond, 1560-1610, Michael Graham
Michael F. Graham
The "Uses of Reform" is a study of the Reformation as a movement for behavioral reform, concentrating on Scotland during the first fifty years (1560-1610) of its Reformation as a primary example. The opening chapters trace the development of "Godly Discipline" as part of the European-wide reform movement. Graham follows this general narrative with a study of the creation and implementation of a disciplinary system in Scotland. Finally, he compares disciplinary practices in the Scottish Church with those of the Huguenot communities of France. Looking closely at the proceedings of church courts which enforced regulations concerning behavior, Graham paints a …

Trees Of History In Systematics And Philology, Robert O’Hara
Trees Of History In Systematics And Philology, Robert O’Hara
Robert J. O’Hara
«The Natural System» is the name given to the underlying arrangement present in the diversity of life. Unlike a classification, which is made up of classes and members, a system or arrangement is an integrated whole made up of connected parts. In the pre-evolutionary period a variety of forms were proposed for the Natural System, including maps, circles, stars, and abstract multidimensional objects. The trees sketched by Darwin in the 1830s should probably be considered the first genuine evolutionary diagrams of the Natural System—the first genuine evolutionary trees. Darwin refined his image of the Natural System in the well-known evolutionary …

Latin Verse Inscriptions In Anglo-Saxon Art, Elizabeth Teviotdale
Latin Verse Inscriptions In Anglo-Saxon Art, Elizabeth Teviotdale
Elizabeth C Teviotdale
This article identifies the corpus of surviving Anglo-Saxon works of art with newly composed Latin verse inscriptions: 19 paintings and drawings in seven manuscripts, one carved stone, and one engraved portable altar. A significant flourishing of the practice of including verse in works of art is associated with the Benedictine monastic reform movement of the mid-10th century. The nature of the relationship, both denotative and spatial, between the inscriptions and the images they accompany is explored through the examination of selected representative examples. It is proposed that the Anglo-Saxons understood this poetry to be an essentially written and visual art …
