Lucas Heights Revisited: The Framing Of A Major Scientific Controversy By The Sydney Morning Herald, Adam Robert Lucas Jan 1994

Lucas Heights Revisited: The Framing Of A Major Scientific Controversy By The Sydney Morning Herald, Adam Robert Lucas

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

A detailed analysis of the Sydney Morning Herald's reportage of the Lucas Heights controversy reveals significant omissions in the cover-age. In particular, I draw attention to the existence of two competing rationalities within the controversy, that is, the instrumental rationality used by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), the Australian Federal Government, and the SMH editorial to publicly justify the buildeing of a new reactor, and the ecological rationality advocated by the Sutherland Shire Council's scientific consultants and some individuals within the environmental lobby. I further argue that the full ramifications of the SMH's reportage of this controversy …

A Goal For Mla Women: Success With Integrity, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 1994

A Goal For Mla Women: Success With Integrity, Nancy Topping Bazin

Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications

As a former director of women's studies at three universities (1971- 85) and an ardent participant in the development of women's studies during those years, I recall with nostalgia the warmth, the communal spirit, and the depth ·of commitment characterizing that earlier period. Frequently we felt exhilarated, knowing we were on the forefront in transforming the disciplines. We were highly supportive of one another rather than critical. Since then, scholarship and theory have become increasingly specialized. Now, for many, consciousness springs not from political action but from books; the use of "gender" rather than "women" misleads some into thinking sisterhood …

Antihomophobic Pedagogy: Some Suggestions For Teachers, Ian Barnard Jan 1994

Antihomophobic Pedagogy: Some Suggestions For Teachers, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

Too often as teachers we feel that we are doing the right thing by assigning our students "open-ended" essay topics or by inviting students to argue "both" sides of a controversial current event. The ideologies and institutions of liberal pluralism tell us that this is the way to promote "free speech," "democratic" argument, etc. But these kinds of topics and discussions have the effect of privileging dominant power relations and of further silencing our queer students. For example, if we ask our students to debate whether homosexuality is "wrong" or not, we are expecting our queer students to justify their …

Self-Overcoming In Foucault's Discipline And Punish, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 1994

Self-Overcoming In Foucault's Discipline And Punish, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Prisons are veritable universities of crime. Within them young offenders learn both the values and the techniques of hardened criminals. In addition to these lessons in professional ethics and theory, aspiring criminals also get hands-on experience within prison walls, for prisons are also centers of criminal activity: drug and arms trafficking, rape, gang warfare, and murder. And, like all good universities, prisons help their proteges make the contacts they need to further their budding careers.

George Bush Of Tumwater: Founder Of The First American Colony On Puget Sound, Darrell Millner Jan 1994

George Bush Of Tumwater: Founder Of The First American Colony On Puget Sound, Darrell Millner

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

A biography of pioneer George Washington Bush is presented. A free mulatto, information on Bush's childhood and birth date are uncertain. Believed to have been raised in Pennsylvania and educated under Quaker influence, Bush was literate and worked in the cattle business before moving to Oregon with his wife and children in 1844. Bush encountered various forms of racism, but was not deterred by pioneer life and by 1850 the family farm in the Tumwater, Washington area was thriving.

From The Ochre World - #24, Jon Davis Jan 1994

From The Ochre World - #24, Jon Davis

The Prose Poem: An International Journal

Note: The Ochre World is a 45 page poem, formed at the junction of a dream, a news event, and some photographs of the Lascaux cave paintings. Some of the poem's sections can stand alone, others cannot, but all are enriched by a scheme of recurring imagery and an evolving "argument." Although unnumbered in the full manuscript, I have given these sections—which occur late in the poem—numbers, so the reader can feel the duration, at least, of the absent sections.
