Working Paper #2 The Embeddedness Of Community Cultural Institutions: Wall Art In Social Context, Mark Stern Aug 1994

Working Paper #2 The Embeddedness Of Community Cultural Institutions: Wall Art In Social Context, Mark Stern

Social Impact of the Arts Project

During the summer of 1994, three SIAP research assistants-- Laura Amrofel, Gina Abrevaya Dyer, and Alison Wolk--hung out in the neighborhoods around two wall murals (one in South Philadelphia, one in West Philadelphia), talked to residents, and observed the way the spaces around the murals were used. They found that the impact of the murals on their neighborhoods was connected to the demography and ecology of the community, but not in a simple way.

Working Paper #1: Individual Participation And Community Arts Groups: A Quantitative Analysis Of Philadelphia, Mark J. Stern, Susan C. Seifert Aug 1994

Working Paper #1: Individual Participation And Community Arts Groups: A Quantitative Analysis Of Philadelphia, Mark J. Stern, Susan C. Seifert

Social Impact of the Arts Project

This paper uses data from the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts to examine the connection between frequency of cultural participation and the number of arts organizations in a respondent's zipcode. It finds that this "neighborhood effect" of community arts programs is a stronger predictor of cultural participation than demographic factors like age, race, or socio-economic status. This paper, written by Mark Stern and Susan Seifert in 1994, raised a set of questions to which we returned in Working Papers 6 and 7.

Anticipating The Atom: Popular Perceptions Of Atomic Power Before Hiroshima, Jacques D'Emal Jul 1994

Anticipating The Atom: Popular Perceptions Of Atomic Power Before Hiroshima, Jacques D'Emal

Jacques d'Emal

Before Hiroshima made the Bomb an object of popular concern, possible implications and applications of atomic physics had been discussed in the public forum. The new science of X-rays and radium promised the possibilities of unlimited energy and the transmutation of elements in the two decades leading up to World War I. During the twenties, as scientific method struggled to keep pace with atomic theory, discussion centered on the feasibility of atomic disintegration as an energy source and the many uses of radium. The 1927 case of the New Jersey Radium Dial Painters, who sued their employers for compensation after …

Oh Bitter Exile!: Toward A Greek View Of Xenitia, Nancy Sultan Apr 1994

Oh Bitter Exile!: Toward A Greek View Of Xenitia, Nancy Sultan

Nancy Sultan

To avoid leaving Ithaca for war against Troy, the ancient Greek hero Odysseus feigns madness: he yokes together an ass and an ox and plows a field, sowing the furrows with salt. When a cunning envoy of Agamemnon takes Telemachos, Odysseus' infant son, and places him in the path of the plow, Odysseus avoids the child and his ruse is uncovered. Forced at last to join the expedition, the Homeric hero embarks on his twenty-year journey, the story of which has been retold in traditional Greek song and poetry for millennia. Odysseus is one of many male Greek wanderer figures …

“I Want To See Seijun’S Films Once More Before I Die”—The Suzuki Seijun Incident And Postmodern Spectatorship / 「清順の映画、もう一度見て死にたい」——鈴木清順問題とポスト・モダン観客性, Aaron Gerow Jan 1994

“I Want To See Seijun’S Films Once More Before I Die”—The Suzuki Seijun Incident And Postmodern Spectatorship / 「清順の映画、もう一度見て死にたい」——鈴木清順問題とポスト・モダン観客性, Aaron Gerow

Aaron Gerow

The Japanese film director Suzuki Seijun was fired from the Nikkatsu studio in 1968 for making "incomprehensible" films. When the studio also declared it would no longer rent out his films, a protest movement emerged among film critics and fans. This paper analyses the form of spectatorship the protest movement proposed, one that aligns with postmodern modes of readership by declaring the rights of the viewer to create and possess the film. An elitist stance towards cinematicity, however, exposed the contradictions in the protests, and presaged the changes in film criticism from 1970 on.

Identidad Y Trascendencia: La Respuesta Sublime De Adelaida García Morales, Carmela Ferradans Dec 1993

Identidad Y Trascendencia: La Respuesta Sublime De Adelaida García Morales, Carmela Ferradans

Carmela Ferradans

Reading Between The Texts: Benjamin Thomas's 'Abraham Lincoln' And Stephen Oates's 'With Malice Toward None', Robert Bray Dec 1993

Reading Between The Texts: Benjamin Thomas's 'Abraham Lincoln' And Stephen Oates's 'With Malice Toward None', Robert Bray

Robert Bray

This essay, previously published in the 'Journal of Information Ethics' (1994) is the one that ignited the Stephen B. Oates plagiarism scandal; that story is fully told in the companion book, 'Dishonest Abe Scholarship.' 'Reading between the Texts' is an analysis of parallels between the two Lincoln biographies of the title, arguing that Oates's book was in parts written out of Thomas's, without acknowledgement of the former's work.
