Ecology And Religion: Christian And Hindu Paradigms, Klaus Klostermaier Jan 1993

Ecology And Religion: Christian And Hindu Paradigms, Klaus Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Neither Hinduism nor Christianity had or have 'ecology' as their central focus. A contemporary Hindu or Christian ecology can be developed by rethinking and restructuring traditional teachings, amplifying seminal statements and linking these up with the dominating concern of the late 20th century, to 'save the earth'. In the context of a 'science and religion' seminar some years back one of my colleagues from the life sciences remarked: 'What we need today is an ecological messiah'. The task before us is that of the one preparing the way for such an ecological messiah, pulling together strands of Hindu and Christian …

Environmental Ethics: Ancient Traditions And Contemporary Dilemmas: A Hindu Perspective, Sehdev Kumar, Aaloka Mehndiratta Jan 1993

Environmental Ethics: Ancient Traditions And Contemporary Dilemmas: A Hindu Perspective, Sehdev Kumar, Aaloka Mehndiratta

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

According to an ancient Hindu myth the goddess Earth was once imprisoned at the bottom of the ocean, in the nether world, by a demon who had laid waste to the earth, causing havoc to the order of things. To rescue her from the demon, Lord Vishnu incarnated as a boar, as Varaha Avatar. He fought and killed the demon and released the goddess Earth by carrying her on his tusk to float free once more on the cosmic waters.

The New Master-Paradigm: Ecology, Klaus Klostermaier Jan 1993

The New Master-Paradigm: Ecology, Klaus Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The thesis of this essay is that ecology, understood as concern for nature in the most comprehensive sense, is going to be the master paradigm of the science and politics of the future. It will not only be the focus of theoretical preoccupations aiming at halting, and possibly reversing the destructive tendencies inherent in modern industrial civilisation but also the focus of socio-political praxis: no government will be able to survive if it does not give concrete expression to the ecological concern of its citizens and the ecological focus will bring about a cooperation of people across the boundaries of …

Viewpoints: The Human, The Environment: Sundry Questions, Murray Rogers Jan 1993

Viewpoints: The Human, The Environment: Sundry Questions, Murray Rogers

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

This piece is not authoritative, definitely not! It is all wonderments, the sharing of puzzles and questions and then, from time to time, of wonder. That is why the real vehicle of such an essay is worship, that mysterious activity within the human which is from the beyond.

Reflections On Swami Vivekananda's Speeches At The World Parliament Of Religions, 1893, Ronald Neufeldt Jan 1993

Reflections On Swami Vivekananda's Speeches At The World Parliament Of Religions, 1893, Ronald Neufeldt

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Much has been written about Swami Vivekananda's appearance at the World Parliament of Religions in 1893. On the whole, the assessments of his appearance from both academics and non-academics has been positive, emphasising Vivekananda's contributions to religious harmony in the world. Vivekananda was and remains an exemplary spokesperson for the enduring themes of the Ramakrishna mission, in particular for the idea that all religions are true inasmuch as they lead to the same goal.

Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Christian Perspective, Roger Hutchinson Jan 1993

Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Christian Perspective, Roger Hutchinson

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In his review of the 1932 English translation of Max Weber's famous study, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, United Church of Canada theologian John Line observed that Protestants in particular should pay close attention to Weber's findings. 'For they make it clear that Protestantism had a leading part in determining our present economic structure, a fact which puts in our hands a liability now that the faults of that structure have become apparent.' A few decades later Christians awakened to a similar sense of responsibility for environmental problems. One of the catalysts for this awakening was …

Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Hindu Perspective, O. P. Dwivedi Jan 1993

Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Hindu Perspective, O. P. Dwivedi

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The World Commission on Environment and Development acknowledged that to reconcile human affairs with natural laws 'our cultural and spiritual heritages can reinforce our economic interests and survival imperatives'. But until very recently, the role of our cultural and spiritual heritages in environmental protection and sustainable development was ignored by international bodies, national governments, policy planners, and even environmentalists. Many fear that bringing religion into the environmental movement will threaten objectivity, scientific investigation, professionalism, or democratic values. But none of these need be displaced in order to include the spiritual dimension in environmental protection. That dimension, if introduced in the …

Viewpoints: Environment, Spirituality And Women, J. Josephine

Modern-day homes, offices and places of amusement are decorated with portraits of beautiful landscapes, flora and fauna. In some cases the walls are adorned with beautiful and exotic wallpapers to get a feeling of staying or living in the natural environs. Roadside hawkers are very busy selling beautiful pictures of nature in all its glory as they attract shoppers. People living in concrete jungles in big cities and towns crave for a refreshing glimpse of nature to enliven their drooping spirits.

Viewpoints: Environmental Awareness: The Hindu Perspective, R. Vijayalakshmi

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The oldest religion of the people of India is Hinduism. It is a religion which was not propounded by a single individual, but was evolved out of the developments spanning several millennia. It has the distinction that it has assimilated the unique features of all the ages through which it evolved. From the time of its appearance it has grown by adapting itself to its environment. Several works have come forth as an expression of its doctrines from the very beginning. But there is no single gospel for Hinduism as, say, the Bible is for Christianity. The Vedas, the Brahmanas, …
