Class Structure In Australian History - Poverty And Progress, Terry Irving, Raewyn Connell

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

First published in 1980, this book is an updated and reorganized account of the history of the class structure in Australia. Separate sections for documents and photographs support the narrative. Extensive notes provide a guide to research literature.

Exploring The Relationship Between People And The Environment In The English Classroom, Annette Worm

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The power of literature may help bring the status of the environment into the minds of readers while providing the basis for people to find ways to heal themselves and their world. The English classroom can integrate critical thinking skills with nature literature to help the teenagers learn decision-making techniques and construct their own values and attitudes toward the environment

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1992

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With the end of the National Football League's regular season, we have come to the end of another season of despair for the Tampa Bay Bucs. New levels of futility were achieved as the Bucs turned in their tenth consecutive season in which they have lost at least ten games. And the Bucs don't just lose, they lose in new and creative ways. This is a team of legendary incompetence, whose poor performance over a sustained period of time is earning them a special place in the history of the NFL.

Anaximander And The Architects, Robert Hahn Dec 1992

Anaximander And The Architects, Robert Hahn

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

This essay is divided into several sections. In (B) I set out the problem of making a diagram or model of Anaximander's cosmos, then in (C) I outline the relevant fragments and testimony - for Anaximander's picture of the cosmos and its formation — from which a diagram or model might be constructed. Next, in (D) I invite the reader to reflect on the differences between plan and elevation perspectives: two ways of Imagining. In (D.l), evidence for plan and elevation perspectives in ancient Egyptian architecture is examined, and the contributing influence is considered; in (D.2) evidence for ...

The cover title sometimes appears as “The Heritage.” The publication’s purpose was to support the society and to publish information about the genealogy, culture, and history of Muhlenberg County. Alexander On Form-In-Matter And The Breakdown Of Aristotle's Categories, John O. Ellis Dec 1992

Alexander On Form-In-Matter And The Breakdown Of Aristotle's Categories, John O. Ellis

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

My discussion is divided into six sections. In the first I provide some background to the form-in-matter problem in Aristotle; the second focusses on Alexander's solution to the problem; in the third, we consider Plotinus' contribution; in the fourth, there's brief treatment of the problem by the commentators on the Categories; and finally in the fifth section I look at what I call the 'Lucius problem' - this pertains directly to the substantial qualities doctrine, and it reveals, I suggest, how Alexander's way of solving the form-in-matter problem contributes to the breakdown of Aristotelian categories. In the ...

Foundationalism, Coherentism, And Aristotle, Robin A. Smith Dec 1992

Foundationalism, Coherentism, And Aristotle, Robin A. Smith

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

It is the need to respond to various forms of relativism, with their nihilistic consequences for philosophy and science, that was the primary epistemological goal for Plato and Aristotle. Such a goal is a far more credible and a far more urgent one for them than the refutation of Cartesian radical skepticism, a position they do not even seem to take seriously.

The Ten Days Of Christmas: Tv Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Twelve Days of Christmas we don't have, but we do have ten days of Christmas from December 25 through January 3 during which television offers a mind-boggling array of football, basketball(professional and college), and hockey. Sports television in the late 20th century may have spawned an entirely new concept of the days of Christmas.

Review Of Virtue And The Veil Of Illusion: Generic Innovation And The Pedagogical Project In Eighteenth-Century Literature By Dorothea Von Mücke, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Dec 1992

Review Of Virtue And The Veil Of Illusion: Generic Innovation And The Pedagogical Project In Eighteenth-Century Literature By Dorothea Von Mücke, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

This original and wide-ranging comparative study examines how emergent literary genres in eighteenth-century Europe participate in the pedagogical project of male subject formation. The author focuses on the intersection of semiotics, pedagogy and aesthetics, and demonstrates how changing models of signification give rise to new strategies in subject formation. Drawing on Foucault, she identifies two major semiotic paradigm shifts in the eighteenth century: first the "transparency model" of the mid-eighteenth century, which presumes that the sign is an ideal representation of the signified; and second the "intransitive" or "self-referential model" that emerges late in the century. With each of these ...

Shaq: The Latest Impact Player, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

They are called impact players. The kind of player who can come into a league and make an immediate impact on a team, and even on a league. They are few and far between. The Orlando Magic has one. At 7'1" and around 300 pounds he is what Al McGuire termed an aircraft carrier, and Dick Vitale calls a space eater. Either description will do. He is Shaquille O'Neal. The Shaq.
