Staffing A Church For Growth: A Church Planting Model, Gary L. Mcintosh
Staffing A Church For Growth: A Church Planting Model, Gary L. Mcintosh
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
What is the best way to staff a church so that it grows? Historically this has not been an urgent question for church leaders. Throughout most of church history few churches were large enough to have multiple church staff members. It has only been since the Industrial Age of the mid 1800s that enough people were clustered in cities to produce churches large enough to need multiple staff members. Even then multiple staffing did not become a well known phenomenon until the 1950s when the growing complexity of the so-called Information Age sprang upon the church increasing mobility, diversity, and …
Reaching The Buster Generation, Elmer L. Towns
Reaching The Buster Generation, Elmer L. Towns
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
The first Baby Buster turned 25 years of age in 1991, but Busters do not march to the same drum beat as their Boomer parents. Their Boomer parents were fighters and winners, fighting for women’s rights, nuclear freeze, and the peace movement. They hated Vietnam and the Cold War and they loved the "Camelot" Kennedy Years in the White House. But their Baby Busters are different. They have no great dreams, no battles to win, no mountains to climb. They are a generation with busted dreams, busted ambitions, and busted trust.

A Movement Is Born: Church Growth Beginnings In An Old Church In Germany, Hans Martin Wilhelm
A Movement Is Born: Church Growth Beginnings In An Old Church In Germany, Hans Martin Wilhelm
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
A new approach must be discovered to break old, encrusted traditions which have kept the church in a "Babylonian captivity." Lack of spiritual vitality and creativity have stifled attempts to inject new life into the church. Unfortunately, the influx of missionary personnel into the European scene has not produced the breakthrough it hoped to accomplish. Mission societies have failed to be the change agents they wanted to be. This is principally due to the failure to understand the historical and cultural context, as well as the theological complexities of the German situation.
The Framework For A National Strategy In Church Planting, Charles Chaney
The Framework For A National Strategy In Church Planting, Charles Chaney
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
A revolution has occurred in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in the past half century. The geographical boundaries of the South no longer contain us. Cultural and racial sameness, which once marked the convention, while still pervasive in some areas of our greatest strength, is no longer true nationally. Southern Baptists are ready now to think and act from a national perspective. For the first time, a truly national strategy is a possibility.
Church Planting In The Korean Nazarene Church: An Evaluation Of The "1991 Thrust To The City Of Seoul" Program, Ki Young Hong
Church Planting In The Korean Nazarene Church: An Evaluation Of The "1991 Thrust To The City Of Seoul" Program, Ki Young Hong
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
The Korean Nazarene Church (KNC) plans to plant 70 new churches in Seoul by 1993 through the "1991 Thrust to the City of Seoul” program. To date, more than fifteen churches have been planted in Seoul through this program. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the KNC’s church planting effort in Seoul and offer some suggestions for how it could be strengthened.

The Theology Of Father Brown, Catherine Miles Flynn
The Theology Of Father Brown, Catherine Miles Flynn
Institute for the Humanities Theses
This thesis explores the theological thought of G. K. Chesterton, particularly as it is found in his detective short stories about Father Brown. In his other works (e.g., Orthodoxy, Heretics, and his many books of essays), the theology of Chesterton is obvious. However, in the light, whimsical Father Brown stories the theology expressed is often profound, but underrated if not ignored by his critics. Specific examples from his stories will be used to highlight the theological points within the mysteries.
The life and times of Chesterton are discussed as having highly influenced his thought. His unconventional religious upbringing, in particular, …

A Survey Of Gay/Lesbian Catholics Concerning Attitudes Toward Sexual Orientation And Religious Beliefs, Thomas W. O'Brien
A Survey Of Gay/Lesbian Catholics Concerning Attitudes Toward Sexual Orientation And Religious Beliefs, Thomas W. O'Brien
Thomas W O'Brien
The negative assessment of lesbian/gay relationships in Catholic circles is most often based on scanty information gathered from folklore, the commercial media, and a narrow, literal reading of Biblical texts. Assumptions are made about the personal adjustment of individual gay/lesbian persons and the quality of their relationships without recourse to actual lived experience. This survey of 263 gay/lesbian Catholics and 20 controls was designed to receive direct feedback from lesbian/gay persons concerning their religious attitudes, personal adjustment, and relational quality. The results contradict many preconceptions, and a remarkable similarity is demonstrated between the gay/lesbian responses and those of the control …

The Relationship Of Christ And Faith In Luther’S Great Galatians Commentary (1531/1535), Section 2:16-21, Luisivan Veller Strelow
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Luther’s language. is not always .easily understandable in his description of how Christ and faith are related so that faith in Christ justifies with the exclusion of works. Luther refers to the "present Christ" and says, "Therefore faith justifies because it takes hold of and possesses this treasure, the present Christ.” Luther says also that Christ is "the form of faith," and that Christ and the believer are "as one person.” How is this language to be understood? In contrast to some authors who isolated these phrase. and interpret them in a way which goes against their own context, the …

Refiner’S Fire: The Soteriology Of Sacrifice In The Work Of William Porcher Dubose, Robert B. Slocum
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This article is a sequel to 'living the Truth: An Introduction to the Theological Method and Witness of William Porcher DuBose' which appeared in the December 1990 issue of the St. Luke’s Journal of Theology. DuBose (1836-1918) was the second dean of the School of Theology (1894-1908) and a leading Episcopal theologian. His primary theological theme was soteriology. This article elucidates that theme.
An Analysis Of Justification By Faith, Laverne Janssen
An Analysis Of Justification By Faith, Laverne Janssen
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
A critical evaluation of this topic is practical today for a variety of reasons. Many Lutherans today earnestly desire a consensus on the gospel with the Roman Catholic Church. This desire is often misdirected by a lack of crucial information on the respective Lutheran and Roman Catholic teachings on justification today. The responsible pastor must provide the doctrinal information that is lacking. A restatement of the Roman Catholic position of Trent by the Lutheran pastor will not usually satisfy the questions of those who have witnessed what appear to be basic changes in the Roman Catholic Church in our generation.
The Relation Of The Celebration Of The Lord's Supper To The Office Of The Holy Ministry:, Kent Heimbigner
The Relation Of The Celebration Of The Lord's Supper To The Office Of The Holy Ministry:, Kent Heimbigner
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis is written with the presupposition that the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the divinely inspired written Word of God. This is most consistent with an investigation of the liturgical writings of the early church, as the earliest liturgies of the church consist almost entirely of the words of Holy Scripture. Those who used these liturgies sought not to displace what they had received but rather to confess it as they had first received it.
This thesis does not undertake to prove from Scripture the doctrines of either the Holy Ministry or the Lord's Supper …
Leadership In Churches Of Christ In Argentina: Expectations Of National Christians For The Use Of Power By Church Leaders, William Alan Richardson
Leadership In Churches Of Christ In Argentina: Expectations Of National Christians For The Use Of Power By Church Leaders, William Alan Richardson
Doctor of Ministry Theses
From the earliest arrival of Spaniards in Argentina, strong authoritarian leaders have provided the predominant model for leadership in all arenas. This project/thesis sets out to discover the effects of this history upon the expectations of Argentine Christians for leaders and leadership styles in the churches of Christ, investigating three key questions: Do Argentine Christians prefer authoritative or participa- tive systems of organization in the church? What system of organization is actually employed in the churches of Christ? Is change required?
In order to answer these questions, the study was initiated with an overview of the history of Argentina and …
The Lord's Supper's Eschatology In The Blood Of The Covenant, Joel Lehenbauer
The Lord's Supper's Eschatology In The Blood Of The Covenant, Joel Lehenbauer
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The thesis we will try to defend is that the theology of the Lord’s Supper is the matrix of the theology of the Lord's Supper's23eschatology. What gives the Lord's Supper its unique character will also give the Lord's Supper's eschatology its unique character. One’s view of what holds the Lord's Supper together will determine one's view of what holds the Lord's Supper together with its eschatology. What is seen as the proprium of the Lord's Supper will also be the center of the Lord's Supper's eschatology.

"But Where Shall Understanding Be Found?" Searching For Sophia, Personified Wisdom, Kathleen Damiani
"But Where Shall Understanding Be Found?" Searching For Sophia, Personified Wisdom, Kathleen Damiani
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The thesis examines the image of Sophia, divine feminine wisdom, from the point of view of -archetypal psychology. The paper describes the emergence of Sophia in the Old Testament against the background of the development of monotheism in Judaism. Modern scholarship defines Sophia in religious terms, thus restricting her meaning to the limits imposed by the Judaeo-Christian concept of God. When the "problem" of Sophia is removed from the language of theology, however, and re-examined from the perspective of archetypal psychology, new meanings emerge. The position taken is that Sophia is an archetypal image which personifies the capacity of reflection …

On Moral Grounds: The Art/Science Of Ethics, A. Nicholas Fargnoli Ph.D., Daniel C. Maguire
Open-Access Books by Faculty
From the introduction:
Our age can lay claim to a unique moral chaos. Modernity badgers us with perplexing moral questions: Can good ethics and good business ever coincide? Should medical science do all the things that it now can do? Is truth-telling always a virtue? If it is, how can one maintain professional or personal confidentiality? Is honesty always the best policy? What are the proper criteria for the journalistic media when it comes to reporting the real news and avoiding sensationalism? Should there be an “ethics committee” in government, in business, in hospitals, in law firms, or in financial …
