Ekphrasis, Intertextuality And The Role Of The Reader In Poems By Francisco Brines And Claudio Rodríguez, W. Michael Mudrovic
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Ekphrasis, the verbal representation of visual art, affords a singular perspective on a discrepancy between the general conception of intertextuality and its practical application. Francisco Brines's "Museo de la Academia" ("Museum of the Academy") and Claudio Rodríguez's "Hilando" ("Spinning") both contain the description of a painting. Each poet achieves diverse effects with a different handling of the respective paintings, yet both come to surprisingly similar conclusions with regard to the poetic act. Brines's depiction of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian supplies a limited amount of information that dovetails neatly with the use of metaphor and metonymy. Rodríguez's use of synecdoche …

Embodiments Of Shape: Cubes And Lines And Slender Gilded Thongs In Picasso, Duchamp And Robbe-Grillet, Emma Kafalenos

An account, from several perspectives, of a structural type exemplified by Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), generally considered the first Cubist painting; Marcel Duchamp's Nu descendant un escalier (1912), and Alain Robbe-Grillet's La Maison de rendez-vous (1965). To compare contemporary texts to paintings that arose in the moment immediately preceding the full achievement of the non-representational suggests that both incorporate trivial—and even popular—elements because they are so eminently cuttable. In each work, the decomposition of objects to their pieces shifts interest from paradigm to syntagm, while retaining sufficient reference to paradigm to embody syntagm, to make structure perceptible. This paper explores a singular chapter in Social Work, Appalachia and
American culture. Like many other aspects of Appalachian culture and politics, it is
primarily a tale of extended effort for what proved to be a lost cause. Like many
other chapters in the history of the social work profession, it is a tale of a bright
beginning and insufficient follow-through. It is an optimistic narrative of expected
and unanticipated consequences that have proven to be beneficial for the culture

This article traces the history of modern wood engraving, including the argument in the art world that took place regarding whether wood engraving could be considered "art" in the first place. As the art form gained popularity with print publishers due to its convenience and beauty, internal debates took place about which direction the art form should take, especially within the "New School" of wood engraving that had emerged. Research for the article was aided by Syracuse University's Special Collections.

This show illustrates something of the depth and range of American ceramics since World War II. It includes both very well-known and less well-known names. As most of the pieces are vessels of one kind or another (with a few oustanding exceptions) it expressly refers us to the roots of the ceramic art in handling clay by throw-potting. Many pieces in fact embody in their imagery the axially centered container. A mature artistic style ln ceramics has the capability of reflecting the potter ✓ s ideas, feelings, and philosophy. Many influences may effect the formation of this style. As the artist reacts to various influences a new level of development or maturity may begin. The work displayed in my Graduate Exhibition at Lindenwood College represents six phases of development. Skill in creating wheel-thrown pottery was developed in the first phase by doing production pottery work. The technique of faceting was introduced in the second phase as a result of the influence of Rosalyn Tynge. A more sophisticated appearance was achieved …
