Leviticus 17:11 And The Theology Of Sacrifice, Robert Clancy Sep 1990

Leviticus 17:11 And The Theology Of Sacrifice, Robert Clancy

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It should be noted from the start that "objectivity” as it is commonly understood is not a goal of this thesis. The primary reason is that such objectivity is considered Tobe impossible. That is, if by "objectivity" one means that one reads and studies a text without presuppositions and without a hermeneutic, then one is striving after wind. No reader is a tabula rasa. All scholars read texts from within a given school of thought. Historical critics have certain presuppositions regarding texts, for instance, starting with the assumption that cultic material is late (post-exilic). Redaction critics assume the existence of ...

Aspects Of The Calendar Of The Hebrew Bible And Its Theological Significance, Charles Blanco May 1990

Aspects Of The Calendar Of The Hebrew Bible And Its Theological Significance, Charles Blanco

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of the thesis is twofold. We endeavor to provide the exegetical base for the understanding of the calendar used by God's4people in the Old Testament. There is, of course, a certain heuristic value to our topic for Old Testament studies at large. Beyond that, we find our study to be unique in its approach. Apart from the confessional position outlined above, we came to the texts without any preconceived notions about the nature, structure, and use of the Hebrew calendar. Conversely, the vast majority of works on the calendar are undertaken to prove a particular point of ...

The "I" In The Storm: Paul's Use Of The First Person Singular In Romans 7, Michael Middendorf May 1990

The "I" In The Storm: Paul's Use Of The First Person Singular In Romans 7, Michael Middendorf

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The purpose here is not merely "to spill more ink.” Rather, it is to address approaches to and facets of these issues which have not yet been adequately considered or appreciated. This thesis proposes to answer the questions surrounding the identity, the spiritual condition, and the purpose of the "I" in Romans 7. It will arrive at its conclusions by means of an exegetical study of Romans 7, through an analysis of Paul's use of the first person singular in his letters, and on the basis of Pauline theology as a whole.

In order to provide the necessary background ...

The Brass Plates Version Of Genesis, Noel B. Reynolds Mar 1990

The Brass Plates Version Of Genesis, Noel B. Reynolds

All Faculty Publications

Phraseology occurring in Joseph Smith's "Book of Moses" matches Book of Mormon passages, but not the Bible. Given that the Book of Mormon claims a different source, the brass plates, this finding would be consistent with the conclusion that the Book of Moses and the brass plates versions of Genesis are more similar to each other than to the modern biblical version.

Mark 9:42-10:12, Matthew 5:27-32, And B. Nid. 13b: A First Century Discussion Of Male Sexuality, Will Deming

Theology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Matt 5. 27–32, from the Sermon on the Mount, and Mark 9. 42–10.12 are passages that contain similar material, although neither is directly dependent on the other. Both have sayings that deal with ‘offences’ caused by certain body members (the verb used is σκανδαλίζω), and both contain a version of Jesus' prohibition of divorce. Between these two passages and a third, b. Nid. 13b, from the Babylonian Talmud, there also exist several similarities. Despite this intriguing configuration of materials, which might indicate that all three passages are dependent on a common set of traditions, scholars have approached ...

The Fourth Gospel In A Three-Year Lectionary, Craig R. Koester Jan 1990

The Fourth Gospel In A Three-Year Lectionary, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

The Gospel of John does not march in step with the other gospels. Perhaps this is why the framers of the three-year lectionary now used by many Christian churches found it so difficult to domesticate John. The readings from Matthew, Mark, and Luke proceed in measured pace, one gospel per year, while the Fourth Gospel appears sporadically throughout the lectionary, claiming a premier role on festival days, dominating the Easter season, and making occasional guest appearances. Yet since there is no “Year of John,” those who preach from the lectionary face the formidable task of capturing this “maverick” gospel without ...

The Latter Days And The Time Of The End In The Book Of Daniel, Gerhard Pfandl Jan 1990

The Latter Days And The Time Of The End In The Book Of Daniel, Gerhard Pfandl

Dissertations

This study attempts to investigate the two temporal expressions be'aharit hayyamim (the latter days) and cet qes (the time of the end) in the book of Daniel. Its main objective is to determine the precise meanings ofthese phrases and the relationship between them.

Chapter 1 presents an historical review of literature on the expression "the latter days" and "the time of the end." The four major schools of interpretation (Historical-critical, Preterist, Historicist, Futurist-dispensational) and their understanding of these phrases are outlined and the great divergence of opinions among scholars concerning them is noted. Furthermore, the issues and ...

Christ-Centered Discipleship: A Biblical Concept Of Religious Education, Myung Soo Cho Jan 1990

Christ-Centered Discipleship: A Biblical Concept Of Religious Education, Myung Soo Cho

Dissertations

Concomitant with increased concern for church growth in the 1950s was a new awareness of the importance of discipleship. From the days of Jesus to the present, the concept of discipleship has changed greatly. The problem of this investigation was to identify a Biblical concept of discipleship.

It was hypothesized that the relationship of Jesus with His Heavenly Father was the model for Jesus' discipleship with the Twelve apostles and other disciples. The primary objective was to identify principles form this Christ-centered discipleship that could provide a theoretical framework for Christian religious education.

The historical development of the Rabbinic schools ...
