"Minor" Prophets In The Midst Of Pentecost, Mark A. Throntveit
"Minor" Prophets In The Midst Of Pentecost, Mark A. Throntveit
Faculty Publications
The Old Testament lessons for Pentecost 18, 19, and 20 are drawn from the works of two of the so-called minor prophets, Amos and Habakkuk. In our first passage, Amos 8:4-7(8), the dichotomy of faith and life—compartmentalized religion that sees no reason to let the understandings and experiences of worship affect the activities of the rest of life—comes to the fore. Our second passage, Amos 6:1-7, depicts the incongruity of the way of the affluent: lolling around Samaria, totally oblivious to the “ruin of Joseph” (Amos 6:6) or to the judgment that God will soon visit upon them by means …

The Holiness Of Yahweh In Conflict With The Holiness Of Baal Vis-À-Vis Mount Zion And Mount Zaphon, Reed Lessing
The Holiness Of Yahweh In Conflict With The Holiness Of Baal Vis-À-Vis Mount Zion And Mount Zaphon, Reed Lessing
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The purpose of this study is to define the holiness of Yahweh and the holiness of Baal as they are related to physical, tangible mountains. Qds is25 a holistic idea, which includes both physical and spiritual aspects Brevard Childs sums up this thesis with these words: The Old Testament understanding of space was eschatological, not mythical. It looked to the future, not to the past. However, it chose a mythical category to express the tensions within this new spatial reality. The new space had as its content God's holiness, but it was formed in the midst of a profane and …
Paul's Portrayal Of Judaism: St. Paul's Critique Of Judaism In Romans 3:19-31 And Evidence From Judaism Which Validates His Assessment, Michael Middendorf
Paul's Portrayal Of Judaism: St. Paul's Critique Of Judaism In Romans 3:19-31 And Evidence From Judaism Which Validates His Assessment, Michael Middendorf
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis will address the current debate over whether St. Paul is being fair and accurate in his appraisal of first-century Judaism's teaching on the doctrine of justification. The Apostle is currently being accused of making an unfair caricature of Judaism, especially in regard to its conception of how a righteous standing before God could be attained.1 This first chapter will serve to document these accusations, to lay out the issues and arguments involved in this debate, and then to assess its significance.

"Historical contextualization is vitally important in attaining a view of Tell Hesban as its contemporaries described it. A spectrum of periods are analyzed from their contemporary literary sources: pre-classical and classical sources (Werner K. Vyhmeister), Arab sources (Malcolm B. Russell), a review of critical studies of Old Testament references to the site (Arthur J. Ferch), and traveller's accounts since 1806 (Werner K. Vyhmeister)." AU Press catalogue

Opportunity To Do Good: The Letter To The Galatians, Craig R. Koester
Opportunity To Do Good: The Letter To The Galatians, Craig R. Koester
Faculty Publications
This message may have been attractive to the Galatians because they considered Paul’s gospel of freedom inadequate. The law would give them clear marks of identity, such as circumcision and distinctive rituals. Moreover, it would offer clear directives on how to deal with the Galatians as a form of neurotic legalism. The new preachers were apparently saying something like this: “the flesh with its passions and desires” (5:24), and what to do when someone “is overtaken in any trespass” (6:1). Paul accepts the challenges presented by these issues, as the modern preacher must do. His letter will argue for freedom—and …

Beyond A Patriarchal Interpretation, Holly Nicole Schamban
Senior Scholar Papers
Important in understanding the significance of the Hebrew Bible is the knowledge of how societal and cultural realities affected the ways in which the Hebrew Bible was interpreted. The thesis begins with an examination of the societal and cultural conditions which led to interpretations portraying male supremacy. It theorizes that derogatory images of women, stereotyping them as evil, corrupt, and inferior to men, were in fact due to the masculine biases present in biblical texts as a result of societal and cultural tendencies and were not the intent of the original texts themselves. In fact, patriarchal interpretations of biblical narratives …

Education By Example: A Motif In Joseph And Maccabee Literature Of The Second Temple Period, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.
Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.
In Jewish tradition the five books of Moses hold the place of honor in Israel's sacred writings as the Torah or "instruction" of God. Some people, even in ancient times, seemed to emphasize the legislative teachings or commandments, so the Greek translators chose the word "Nomos" or "Law" to render Torah. Indeed, laws provide the practical norms whereby people guide their lives and teach their offspring. However, in most cultures legislation has its complement in inspiring narratives. Heroes and heroines of times long past are presented as worthy of imitation. They exemplify the ideal that offers a synthesis about the …
