William Walker In Nicaragua: A Critical Review In Light Of Dependency Literature, Patrick N. Sweeney
William Walker In Nicaragua: A Critical Review In Light Of Dependency Literature, Patrick N. Sweeney
Graduate Thesis Collection
William Walker's expedition should be a fertile source of examples of such incipient dependency. This is because that expedition was grounded in the political desires of Manifest Destiny and the pragmatic economics of a cross-isthmus connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during the crucial years just before the U.S. Civil war. Walker's actions caused a war in Central America, brought the United States and England to the brink of war, effected a significant economic relationship, and influenced diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and the U.S. for years afterward. Because of these various actions and reactions, this episode in inter-American relations …

Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen
Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen
The Bridge
In the late medieval and modern periods the histories of Denmark and Norway paralleled each other. During much of that interval the Union of Kalmar (1397-1523), which included also a dynastic tie with Sweden, practically insured common political, economic, and religious development. On the threshold of the modern age Sweden broke away from the Union (1523), but Norway was obliged to remain under Danish rule until 1814.

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
Theses and Dissertations
Girl Scouting began in Utah in 1921 out of a desire of several wealthy women to help build the character of young girls in Ogden. Exhibiting many elements of the "social gospel" aspect of progressivism, they adopted the Girl Scout program which emphasized preparation for practical living, appreciation of nature, and development of character.
Since the first troops were organized in Ogden, Girl Scouting slowly spread throughout the rest of the state, resulting in several Councils and Lone Troops. After responding to a call for consolidation from the National Girl Scout Council the Utah Scouts made a dramatic change in …
A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson
A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan from 1948 to 1980 is a study in cross-cultural interaction. Compared to the earlier attempts of the Church in proselytizing the Japanese in the period 1901 to 1924, there are some significant contrasts. The earlier mission is seen as an attempt by a small, relatively unknown, provincial religion, in financial straits, just emerging into the twentieth century, trying to establish itself in a non-christian, fiercely nationalistic, culturally closed nation.
From very humble beginnings, starting with second and third generation Japanese in Hawaii, and with LDS members of …
A Case Study In Amateur Conflict: The Athletic War In Canada, 1906-1908, Don Morrow
A Case Study In Amateur Conflict: The Athletic War In Canada, 1906-1908, Don Morrow
Donald Morrow
The major objective of this article was to examine the issues prominent in Canada’s amateur ‘athletic war.’ Officially, the schism boiled down to a disagreement between two groups over whether or not amateurs could be allowed to participate with and/or against professionals in team sports while still retaining their amateur standing. The two warring factions were the Canadian Amateur Athletic Union (CAAU) and the Amateur Athletic Federation of Canada (AAF of C); in reality, it was an ideological power struggle between the emerging centre of sport in twentieth century Canada, Toronto, and the revered hub of organized sport in nineteenth …
