The Bultmannian Engima -- An Investigation Into The Concept Of Demythologization, Carlton Llewellyn Williams May 1973

The Bultmannian Engima -- An Investigation Into The Concept Of Demythologization, Carlton Llewellyn Williams

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Time and time again throughout the history of Christianity, scholars have challenged the traditional and orthodox Christian faith particularly on the point of hermeneutics. The Church has made vital reactions to such challenges and has incessantly utilized that which could be salvaged from the proposals and conclusions of these adversaries to clarify and formulate its beliefs. This should be the attitude of every Christian theologian as he seeks to exercise his role as a defender of the faith.

Interpreting the New Testament message in such a way that the modern man can readily understand it has been the object of …

The Struggle For Religious Freedom Through Separation Of Church And State In Colonial America, Fred E. Schuerch May 1973

The Struggle For Religious Freedom Through Separation Of Church And State In Colonial America, Fred E. Schuerch

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The struggle for religious freedom through the separation of church and state in Colonial America is a most important part of our national Christian heritage. Yet, because our living experience is decidedly this side of that struggle, we often fail to understand and thus appreciate the religious liberty it afforded to us. We fail to understand that those who struggled for religious freedom did so to insure that true Christian faith would never be suppressed.

The danger, then, is that in not understanding our religious freedom we lose it. Secure and often complacent in our religious liberty we smile at …

Matthew's Use Of Old Testament Fulfillment In The Nativity/Childhood Section, Kenneth James Peterson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Comparative Analyses Of The Attributes Of Yahweh And Ra, William R. Fox May 1973

Comparative Analyses Of The Attributes Of Yahweh And Ra, William R. Fox

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "The Old Testament contains numerous references to the gods of countries which were near the Hebrew nation. Baal, the male god of Canaan, and Ashtoreth, the female goddess, are referred to as early as Deuteronomy 23:18 and throughout the rest of the Old Testament. Ashur, the chief god of Assyria, is mentioned in Nahum (1:14, 3:1, 3:3-5, 3:13-15) and Ezekiel (22:1-4, 24:6, 24:9) as well as elsewhere. Reference is also made to Chemosh, the god of Moab (Numbers 21:29, Judges 11:24, Jeremiah 48:7) and the Philistine god, Dagon (Judges 16:23, I Samuel 5:2-5, I Chronicle 10:10). However, only a …

A Study Of Ministry To College-Age Youth, Almon Weston Harlow

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek" (Romans 1:16). The good news for the present generation is the same as it was for the people of the first century. Individual men and women may be saved by the grace of God through personal faith in Jesus Christ.

Seventy-Five Years On The Shores Of The Peaceful Sea: A History Of The Pacific District Conference Of The General Conference Mennonite Church Of North America, Lee Price Campbell

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The cry "Go west, young man" was heard by many, especially by farmers from the east and middle west who were attracted by vast acreages and/or cheap land, and by those who, for one reason or another, wished to start a new .life in the newest American frontier. Because the Mennonite people have traditionally been farmers, several of their number were included in the westward migration. The Pacific District Conference was formed to draw these of .like background into c.loser fe.l .lowship. It has grown through the years, slowly but steadily.

The History And Philosophy Of Radical Black Theology, Kennet D. Oliver May 1973

The History And Philosophy Of Radical Black Theology, Kennet D. Oliver

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Our's is an age of theological controversy. Even within the Christian ranks, the milieu of theological controversy has resulted in much theological confusion and misunderstanding. There seems to be an ever-deeping concern, in theological circles, which emphasizes that the individual must know what he believes and why he believes what he does. Along with this emphasis has come the idea that the individual has a right to believe what he wishes to believe as he does; without any infringement upon his person or his theology. No where is this idea more clearly advocated than in the area of radical Black …

A History Of The Congregational Methodist Church From 1957 To 1973, Daniel Wayne Rhodes May 1973

A History Of The Congregational Methodist Church From 1957 To 1973, Daniel Wayne Rhodes

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

During the past two centenaries there have been several Methodist bodies formed either by a split off of, or as a result of the influence of Methodism started under John Wesley. However, in the past forty years there has been an ecumenical movement to reunite many of these bodies. The Congregational Methodist Church is one of the Methodist bodies that has not been included in this ecumenical trend. Disagreement on aspects of doctrine and a distaste for the episcopial form of government are the major reasons for the Congregational Methodist Church not involving themself in this ecumenical trend. Thus, the …

The Theology Of Ecology: A Bibliographical Analysis, Dwight Urbane Nelson May 1973

The Theology Of Ecology: A Bibliographical Analysis, Dwight Urbane Nelson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

INTRODUCTION

In this day of fads, causes, and avant-garde philosophies, the current ecologic crisis is a viable issue. It is no longer possible to confine it to the realm of academic debate or to the bylaws of some esoteric conservationist society; the critical balance between organism and environment is a factor every man must seriously consider. Scientists are now saying that there is no place on earth where the ravages of pollution and environmental misuse have not grossly affected this crucial relationship. Pollution, a reaction which injects foreign substances into the environment as well as removing necessary elements,. touches everyone. …

A Pastor's Guide For Understanding And Helping The Alcoholic, Donald Leroy Hussong Mar 1973

A Pastor's Guide For Understanding And Helping The Alcoholic, Donald Leroy Hussong

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Alcoholism is a major problem in the United States. It is estimated that there are approximately nine million alcoholics in the nation. The problem is compounded greatly when one finds that the average alcoholic affects at least four other people--his immediate family. This additional 36 million added to the nine million alcoholics makes a total of 45 million people affected by alcohol or roughly 20 percent of the total population. The number of alcoholics is increasing at the rate of 200,000 per year. The drug problem has been receiving extensive publicity while alcoholism does not get its share. In 1920, …

An Investigation Of The Theological Motivational Factor For Mission Found In The Doctrine Of Eternal Punishment, Wesley D. Carmack Mar 1973

An Investigation Of The Theological Motivational Factor For Mission Found In The Doctrine Of Eternal Punishment, Wesley D. Carmack

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The emphasis of Christian preaching, teaching, and writing of recent decades has been primarily on the "love of God" and related topics. There have been other emphases, of course, but this theme has dominated Christian thinking for many years. This is in contrast to the preaching and writing of a number of years ago. In the generation just preceding this there was much more emphasis upon "hell-fire-and-brimstone" preaching than there is now. It is this area, "eternal punishment," which forms the nucleus of this study.

This is, however, not just a study of the Biblical doctrine of eternal punishment. It …

A Study In The Experience Of Entire Sanctification In The Pacific Conference Of The Evangelical Church Of North America, Allen Robert Solheim Mar 1973

A Study In The Experience Of Entire Sanctification In The Pacific Conference Of The Evangelical Church Of North America, Allen Robert Solheim

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Christians who experience entire sanctification are interested in the doctrine of Christian holiness. Much has been written on this subject which is generally theoretical in nature. Outside of an occasional testimony or reference to personal experience, there seemed to be little available material on the details of the experience of people. Some months following the writer's experience of entire sanctification, he shared with Dr. Eldon Fuhrman, his dismay at the lack of material in this area. Following a season of prayer and a definite sense of the direction of the Holy Spirit, the idea of this study was born.

A Survery Of Growth Factors In Selected Churches Of The Greater Metropolitan Portland Area, James M. Adamson Jan 1973

A Survery Of Growth Factors In Selected Churches Of The Greater Metropolitan Portland Area, James M. Adamson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The effectiveness of the total church program has been increasingly questioned in recent years . Some of the questioning comes from those who feel the church program generally is irrelevant to the needs of contemporary man, with the Sunday School being the "most 1-vasted hour of the week. 11 others, though not so thorough in discarding the church's present structure and efforts, nevertheless question whether some changes in the life of the church are not in order if new people are to be reached with the Gospel and involved in programs that promote genuine spiritual growth and development.

A Survey Of Christian Holiness Association Affiliate Churches In California Relating To Cooperative Planning, Roger Kenneth Blake Jan 1973

A Survey Of Christian Holiness Association Affiliate Churches In California Relating To Cooperative Planning, Roger Kenneth Blake

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Since 1964 the affiliated denominations of the Christian Holiness Association have been seeking me ans of more effective cooperation in spreading the gospel of full salvation. Through study and joint effort cooperation has been accomplished in many are as on the general church level. Most notable of these is the Alders gate Graded Sunday School curriculum . Beginning January , 1973 , a cooperative minister's magazine was published . Perhaps this movement of cooperation will soon be seen more dramatically at the district and local levels . If so, one of the first goals must be that of comity re …
