Union Theses, Adopted By Breslau Synod And Saxon Free Church, L. W. Spitz, F. E. Mayer Nov 1948

Union Theses, Adopted By Breslau Synod And Saxon Free Church, L. W. Spitz, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is an inseparable union between the two bases of the Reformation, in fact, of the true Church of Christ, viz., between the doctrine that lost and condemned mankind can be saved solely by the grace of God for Christ's sake through faith (sola gratia, sola fide) and the principle that all teaching must be according to the Holy Scriptures (sola Scriptura). There can be no Christian proclamation without the proper distinction between Law and Gospel.

The Integration Of The Lutheran Service Of Worship, Walter E. Buzin Sep 1948

The Integration Of The Lutheran Service Of Worship, Walter E. Buzin

Concordia Theological Monthly

Among the many activities and developments which engage the attention of the Lutheran Church today the liturgical are by no means the most insignificant. Liturgical principles and practices, policies and activities, have been a matter of great concern to the Lutheran Church throughout the four centuries of her existence, and the various modes and procedures adopted within the Church in dealing with these problems often portray to us most vividly why we at times refer to the Bride of Christ as the Church Militant. It is quite likely that the Church always will be confronted and at times even be …

Is Doctrinal Unity A Luxury?, Th. Engelder Aug 1948

Is Doctrinal Unity A Luxury?, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

By the grace of God we have been won for the proposition that the adherence to all doctrine revealed is not a luxury, but a necessity. And by the grace of God we repel, in the first place, all the arguments to the contrary. The argument is advanced that we Lutherans distinguish between fundamental and non-fundamental articles and thus eo ipso declare the non-fundamental articles to be unnecessary. Nothing could be further from the truth. To be sure, there is a great distinction between the fundamental articles and the non-fundamental ones. We say that the fundamental articles are necessary for …

Is Doctrinal Unity A Luxury?, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some time ago this view was expressed in the Christian Century: “In a world like ours, nothing seems to me to be less important than agreement about our theology. . . . Struggling to get such an agreement is a luxury which, perhaps, we can return to when the times are less desperate." (See Conc. Theo. MONTHLY, 1945, p. 569.) Unity in doctrine is here called a luxury; it may be a good thing for the Church to have, but the Church can get along very well without it. Her health does not require it.

St. Paul's Usus Practicus Of Holy Baptism, John Theodore Mueller Jun 1948

St. Paul's Usus Practicus Of Holy Baptism, John Theodore Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

It may safely be said that the average Lutheran Christian does not think of his Baptism often enough and that the average Lutheran pastor does not remind his parishioners often enough of the great value and importance of Holy Baptism. There are, of course, exceptions, but these only establish the rule. If this appears as a rather severe indictment, let the reader bear in mind that due grateful appreciation of the meaning and blessing of Holy Baptism involves a most weighty point in Christian sanctification in which we never become perfect and that, because of our perverse Old Adam, we …

Discourse Of Luther On The Holy Trinity, W. Arndt May 1948

Discourse Of Luther On The Holy Trinity, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

This discourse is taken from a two-volume collection of sermons of Luther which has the title: Predigten D. Martin Luthers auf Grund von Nachschriften Georg Roerers und Anton Lauterbachs, bearbeitet von Geog Buchwald. The volumes appeared in 1925 and 1926, respectively, in the publishing house of C. Bertelsmann, Guetersloh. In the fascinating introduction Dr. Buchwald, an eminent Luther scholar, points out that the sermons of Luther published in the old editions of the Heuspostille are unsatisfactory on account of the editing process to which they were subjected. As is well known, they were not written by Luther; the notes of …

The Concept Of Faith In Romans, Bernard Geerdes May 1948

The Concept Of Faith In Romans, Bernard Geerdes

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the object of the writer of this thesis to undertake that study. He makes no claim that this is an exhaustive study. However, we shall treat some of the chief aspects or faith which Paul deals with in Romans. And since Romans contains the core of the doctrine of Justification by Faith, we hope to have a representative view of the Biblical aspects of faith.

Rome's Doctrine Of Justification, A J. Schauer May 1948

Rome's Doctrine Of Justification, A J. Schauer

Bachelor of Divinity

This brings us to the queston: Is the Roman Catholic or The Lutheran teaching the true Biblical doctrine of justification as it was once proclaimed by Jesus and His apostles? Or have both church bodies veered from divine truth? To answer these questions objectively is the main purpose of this thesis.

The Preaching Of The Gospel As The Motive Power For Good Works, Philip H. Lochhaas May 1948

The Preaching Of The Gospel As The Motive Power For Good Works, Philip H. Lochhaas

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem, then, with which this paper shall deal is this: “On what basis and in what manner shall a Christian minister urge his people to perform good works?" This shall be seen, first of all, from the Bible, both the Old and the New Testaments, the unalterable Word of God, which clearly sets forth the motivation for good works. It shall be seen, secondly, that the Scriptural motivation is clearly and correctly set forth in the Symbolical nooks of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The last section of this paper will be devoted to an analysis of sermons and writings …

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Hiller Apr 1948

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Hiller

Bachelor of Divinity

To illustrate: if there are five passages that all bring out point "A" of the pre-determined outline of the doctrine, it is not necessary to treat all five passages just to show that point "A" is covered in the epistle. If this procedure seems somewhat arbitrary, we state again that the purpose of this thesis is merely to show how completely the doctrine of Christ's humanity has been revealed in the epistle to the Hebrews.
