History Of Disciples Of Christ In Upper East Tennessee, H. C. Wagner Aug 1943

History Of Disciples Of Christ In Upper East Tennessee, H. C. Wagner

Masters Theses

Forward:

Any student of Tennessee history is aware of the fact that from the beginning the churches have played an important part in the development of the life of the state. The Disciples of Christ have been especially active in East Tennessee in the last 125 years, yet nothing has been written of their work. The purpose of this study has been to make a beginning on the research necessary for a full history of the Disciples of Christ in Tennessee. As such, it is largely a study in local church history, with a view to preserving the data and …

The Personal Religion Of Five Representative Eighteenth-Century Poets, Florence G. Marsh Aug 1943

The Personal Religion Of Five Representative Eighteenth-Century Poets, Florence G. Marsh

Masters Theses

Preface: This thesis had its inception in a study of the personal religion of Samuel Johnson, done in the fall quarter of 1942 for Dr. Emperor's seminar. That study, which forms the second chapter here, was extended to include the personal religion of Thomas Gray, James Thomson, Edward Young, and William Shenstone because of my interest in the subject. The selection of the men to be studied was largely arbitrary; five seemed to be all that the scope of a thesis would permit me to treat adequately.

Hoxie Neale Fairchild's Religious Trends in English Poetry, I am sorry to …

The Attitude Of Galdos Toward The Carlists, Irma M. Barnes Jul 1943

The Attitude Of Galdos Toward The Carlists, Irma M. Barnes

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Benito Pérez Galdós, one of Spain's greatest novelists since Cervantes, was so modest and reticent that little is known about his personal life and intimate thoughts. He who liked to tell stories so well that he gave to the world over a hundred, never wanted to tell his own.

The Nicodemus Colony Of Graham County, Kansas, William J. Belleau Jul 1943

The Nicodemus Colony Of Graham County, Kansas, William J. Belleau

Master's Theses

The purpose of this research is to portray the beginning, later growth, decline, and present status of a colony near Bogue, Kansas. The colony in question is the Nicodemus Colony. The motive lying back of the problem is to present the development of this colony in order that people regardless of race, may learn of the trials and tribulations the Negro pioneers lived through in this colony in Graham County.

Christian Worship Of The Ante-Nicene Church, Harold Krenz Jun 1943

Christian Worship Of The Ante-Nicene Church, Harold Krenz

Bachelor of Divinity

"Worship is man's response to God's revelation of Himself." In this sense worship consists of divine revelation and public response. This paper is devoted to the latter aspect of worship. It is the purpose of this paper to study the early origins of man's outward response to the revealed truths of Christianity; how the form of Christian worship was influenced by the Old Testament worship, how it received its indelible color from the Blood of Calvary, and how it began to develop into the highest and most beautiful of the aesthetic arts by the time the Christian religion became a …

Beginnings Of Irish Monasticism, Milton Ernstmeyer Jun 1943

Beginnings Of Irish Monasticism, Milton Ernstmeyer

Bachelor of Divinity

Much of the early history concerning Irish monastic communities and their founders has been clouded by later traditional and biased records of the outstanding ecclesiastical foundations of Ireland. But the writings of Patrick supported by the most ancient Irish documents reveal monastic institutions which were founded for the primary purpose of spreading the teachings of Scripture. The simmple mission stations at the time of Patrick were soon to develop into more advanced seminaries and colleges for the Irish clergy, foreign missionaries, and scholars of the educated world. Its greet importance to the community life in Ireland.

Henry Viii And The Smalcaldic League, George Hoyer Jun 1943

Henry Viii And The Smalcaldic League, George Hoyer

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper aims to show that in all Henry VIII's dealings with the Protestant League he was motivated entirely by aims of Tudor policy. His object was to extend the scope of absolutism within his own realm, and also to preserve his dynasty in security on the throne of England, and in the end, to preserve for himself all the power and privilege which he discovered he controlled after a long reign of pursuing the first two objects. Wherever religious negotiation enters, it ls a motive of policy and not of conviction that governs Henry.

Jesuit Activity In The Catholic Reformation In Bavaria, Frank Bauer Jun 1943

Jesuit Activity In The Catholic Reformation In Bavaria, Frank Bauer

Bachelor of Divinity

The Catholic Reformation may be defined as "all that was done on the part of the Catholics to hinder the progress of the sixteenth century Reformation and to reconquer the already occupied regions." The lion's share of this work was done by the Jesuits. This order was founded in 1540, and this date is often given for the beginning of the Catholic Reformation. They functioned at peak performance in those countries in which the Reformation had made serious inroads. This was true for most of Germany. It is to one of the principalities of Germany - Bavaria, to which we …

Luther's Social Ethics In Contrast To Rome's Asceticism, Arnold Wessler Jun 1943

Luther's Social Ethics In Contrast To Rome's Asceticism, Arnold Wessler

Bachelor of Divinity

"Luther brought back the pure doctrine of justification; that, above all, made him the Reformer of the Church." By carrying out the implications of this Scriptural truth in its relation to the rest of Roman theology Luther once and for all broke the power of the Roman papacy. Other reformers had failed and Luther succeeded in his Reformation because he struck at the root of the problem and undermined the foundations upon which Rome's whole diabolical system of theology rested. Luther succeeded because he destroyed Rome's sacerdotalism and sacramentalism.

Biblical Concept Of Διαθηϗη, Elmer Griesse Jun 1943

Biblical Concept Of Διαθηϗη, Elmer Griesse

Bachelor of Divinity

ΔιαθηϏη is a key-word in Scripture, used to describe the relationship of God to man and man to God. There can be nothing more valuable for man than a right relationship to God. With God, man is supremely happy, without God man is totally unhappy, and is doomed to eternal unhappiness and misery.

Religious Conditions In Israel In The Age Of Eli And Samuel, Paul Sohn Jun 1943

Religious Conditions In Israel In The Age Of Eli And Samuel, Paul Sohn

Bachelor of Divinity

To exhibit in its origin and growth the new order of things, which Samuel had introduced, the prophetic historian of the books of Samuel goes back to the time of Samuel’s birth and makes us acquainted not only with the political oppression under which Israel was suffering but also with the religious conditions at the close of the period of the Judges and during the high priesthood of Eli. He pictures to us the religious decline under Ell.

Criticism And Evaluation Of The Book Of Revelation, Lorenz Blankenbuehler Jun 1943

Criticism And Evaluation Of The Book Of Revelation, Lorenz Blankenbuehler

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this treatise to get at the bottom of some of the early misconceptions and misinterpretations of the Apocalypse -- and by a positive approach endeavor to place the book in its rightful place of honor and esteem among the canonical books of the New Testament. May the Holy Spirit bless this work, and confirm the writer and his readers in the opinion of the early church fathers that this grand. book of comfort and consolation for the world weary Christian pilgrim was written by the Apostle St. John the Divine, by inspiration of the Holy …

A careful consideration of these factors will be helpful in acquiring the proper attitude or perspective for the missionary already before he enters the country. Much time will be saved, for everything will not be new when he begins his work, for he already will have a foundation upon which he can build.

The Federal Council Of The Churches Of Christ In America With Especial Reference To Social Gospel And Unionism, Herbert Hinz May 1943

The Federal Council Of The Churches Of Christ In America With Especial Reference To Social Gospel And Unionism, Herbert Hinz

Bachelor of Divinity

The Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America during the past thirty-odd years has gained an extraordinarily large influence in the affairs of the American Protestant church, and American life and government It has been thought well, because of the extensive power of the Federal Council, to investigate the Council, with reference to its background, religion and work, with special treatment of those factors which make control by the Federal Council in religious, civil and political life intolerable. It is to a study of' such features that this paper is dedicated.

The Pharisees, William Hepting May 1943

The Pharisees, William Hepting

Bachelor of Divinity

We present here a study of Pharisaism with a view more fully to understand and appreciate the attitude of the Pharisees toward Jesus our Savior. The Scribes and the Pharisees were in a position of leadership in the church at the time of Christ's visible sojourn here on earth. They had studied the Old Testament; they knew the Torah; and they were acquainted with the Messianic prophecies. But when the Messiah came in the person of Jesus Christ, the Pharisees were the men who turned out to be His most stubborn opponents. Why? There must have been some reason for …

The Doctrine Of The Holy Ghost According To St Paul, Edward Saleska May 1943

The Doctrine Of The Holy Ghost According To St Paul, Edward Saleska

Bachelor of Divinity

The doctrine or the Holy Spirit is fundamental in Christian teaching. The Holy Spirit’s ministry is intimately bound up in the doctrine of the Trinity and is an all-important factor in the life of the Christian. It makes all the difference in the world as to what a man believes regarding the Holy Ghost and whether or not he has an intelligent understanding of what the Spirit is ready to do for him in his life.

The Colonial Sources Of George Mason's Declaration Of Rights, Louise Ellyson Wiley May 1943

The Colonial Sources Of George Mason's Declaration Of Rights, Louise Ellyson Wiley

Honors Theses

I am attempting in this paper to describe the colonial ideas and institutions, which must have influenced George Mason in the writing of his Declaration of Rights for the Virginia Convention of 1776. First, I will show the effect of European thought and customs in the colonies. The English liberal tradition, which culminated in the seventeenth century struggle for civil liberties and a constitutional monarchy, is quite important. Since the Declaration of Rights can not be understood unless its immediate background is known, I will discuss the more American aspects of colonial life, which must have affected George Mason's political …

The Theology Philo, Roland Frantz May 1943

The Theology Philo, Roland Frantz

Bachelor of Divinity

But because his doctrine of the Logos is the center of his system, a study of Philo commends itself to every advanced Bible student. For this reason also we have in the following pages payed particular attention to Philo's Logos concept. We have made no special attempt to evaluate Philo's theology. Nor is it within the scope of this thesis to draw parallels between Philo and the works of later Christian writers. That is a study in itself.

The Analogy Of The Macrocosm And The Microcosm In The Though Of John Calvin, John Osman May 1943

The Analogy Of The Macrocosm And The Microcosm In The Though Of John Calvin, John Osman

Master's Theses

This thesis is offered as an original investigation into the thought of John Calvin. It maintains that the doctrine of the macrocosm and microcosm furnished Calvin's mind with his metaphysics. It contends that the doctrine is the architecture principle upon which Calvin built his system of thought.

The Policies Of Presidents Buchanan And Lincoln In The Fort Sumter Crisis., W. L. Dennis May 1943

The Policies Of Presidents Buchanan And Lincoln In The Fort Sumter Crisis., W. L. Dennis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to review the period between the election of Lincoln and the beginning of the Civil War, especially in regard to the influence Fort Sumter was to play in the actual commencement of hostilities. Even in the colonial days there had been a reluctance to enter into a strong central Union, although such a Union had been required by the strongest necessity of self-interest and self-preservation. The old Articles of Confederation had demonstrated the reluctance on the part of the States to yield their sovereignty to a central Government. Although the new Constitution of 1789 …

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Utah And Idaho Honeys, Raymond C. Rhees May 1943

Physical And Chemical Properties Of Utah And Idaho Honeys, Raymond C. Rhees

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Even though honey is one of the oldest known sweets, there is a general lack of knowledge concerning its chemical and physical properties. This is particularly true of those honeys produced in the intermountain region. Beekeepers of this region have long felt that their product was sweeter than those honeys produced in other sections of the country. This, of course, implies that honey produced in the intermountain area is higher in sugar concentration and lower in percent moisture. The present study was made in order to supply some data concerning honeys of this area.

Chrysostom A Study Of His Theology, His Sermon Methods, And His Preaching, John Mager Apr 1943

Chrysostom A Study Of His Theology, His Sermon Methods, And His Preaching, John Mager

Bachelor of Divinity

In an examination of Chrysostom it is much easier to come to definite conclusions about his sermon method and his manner of preaching than it is to determine in detail as to just what was his theology. In his intense religiousness and his consequent tendencies toward asceticism Chrysostom was much more interested in morals than in creeds, much more in life than doctrines. Therefore unlike the great Augustine, the mental struggles of his age seem never to have affected him.

The Pastor's Need Of Prayer As Suggested By The Life And Writings Of Saint Paul, James Manz Apr 1943

The Pastor's Need Of Prayer As Suggested By The Life And Writings Of Saint Paul, James Manz

Bachelor of Divinity

In the thirteen Epistles written by the Apostle St. Paul we find no comprehensive treatment of prayer. He has not, for example, dealt with prayer as he has with the doctrines of justification, sanctification, or the Church. Yet his Epistles contain many references to prayer and are steeped in its practice. Prayers in connection with the teachings which he sets forth are interspersed through his writings. He often mentions prayers which he has already offered, and frequently admonishes the Christians to be fervent and faithful in the practice of prayer. This thesis will endeavor to show the pastor's need of …

The History And Scriptural Basis Of The Doctrine Of Christ's Descent Into Hell (Descuses Ad Inferos), Conrad Coyner Apr 1943

The History And Scriptural Basis Of The Doctrine Of Christ's Descent Into Hell (Descuses Ad Inferos), Conrad Coyner

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this monograph is to present a study of the doctrine of Christ's descent into hell both historically and exegetically.

It may appear to the reader that this paper has been written from a prejudiced viewpoint. But the writer maintains that a stout and honest effort was made to study this subject with as open and unbiased a mind as possible. But the conscientious student can only be as unprejudiced as truth itself is prejudiced, and with Daniel Defoe we say "He that hath truth on his side is a fool as well as a coward if he …

The Reaction Of The Roman Catholic Church To The Renaissance And Its Influence On The Lutheran Reformation, John Nieman Apr 1943

The Reaction Of The Roman Catholic Church To The Renaissance And Its Influence On The Lutheran Reformation, John Nieman

Bachelor of Divinity

After this introductory discussion the purpose will be to show the influence of the Renaissance on the Roman Church and the reaction of the Church to this movement, especially the feelings of the Papacy, which was in those days the Church.

The Influence Of St. Paul's Jewish Background On His Life And Letters, Henry Ressmeyer Apr 1943

The Influence Of St. Paul's Jewish Background On His Life And Letters, Henry Ressmeyer

Bachelor of Divinity

To attempt to understand St. Paul involves more than a study of his Epistles and the Book of Acts. His letters and the Acts of the Apostles reveal little of his “pre-Christian” biographical background. We must reconstruct his entire background from several cryptic passages, viz.,"Of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee.” Also: “Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city.”

The Salzburgers And Their Descendants, Norman Kretzmann Apr 1943

The Salzburgers And Their Descendants, Norman Kretzmann

Bachelor of Divinity

To the ministry of the Lutheran Church in America, this thesis is respectfully inscribed; with the fervent prayer, that by carefully studying the history of the Salzburgers, and especially the unfeigned devotion and ardent seal of the first preachers of the Lutheran Church in America, they and their successors may be stimulated to aim at a more elevated standard of piety, and consecrate themselves anew to His service, who hath redeemed us with His blood, and honored us by appointing us His ambassadors, to reconcile the world unto Himself.

The Council Of Trent As A Landmark In The History Of Roman Catholicism, Carl Beiderwieden Apr 1943

The Council Of Trent As A Landmark In The History Of Roman Catholicism, Carl Beiderwieden

Bachelor of Divinity

The Council of Trent is the most important assembly in the history of the Latin Church. To exaggerate the importance of this Council is impossible. On the action of that assembly was to depend whether Europe was to have one religion or many, whether the creed which for so many centuries had shaped the characters of mankind was to continue to speak as the united judgment of all wise and good men, or whether Christendom was to split into factions which would rend and tear each other in every segment of the globe, ‘till the very faith for which they …

Best Sellers In American Fiction During The First Decade Of The Twentieth Century, Sister Marie Joan Sullivan Apr 1943

Best Sellers In American Fiction During The First Decade Of The Twentieth Century, Sister Marie Joan Sullivan

English Language and Literature ETDs

It is the purpose of this study to throw some light upon the characters and habits of thought of the American reader at the beginning of the twentieth century.

This thesis will be confined to those novels classified as best sellers by The Bookman in the years 1900-1910.

To classify a novel as a best seller does not mean that it is a great or even a mediocre work judged from an artistic standpoint.
