Poesía E Historicidad En Ernesto Cardenal Y Roberto Fernández Retamar, Alberto David Rivera Vaca
Poesía E Historicidad En Ernesto Cardenal Y Roberto Fernández Retamar, Alberto David Rivera Vaca
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes the meta-poetic and historicist thought in Ernesto Cardenal and Roberto Fernández Retamar’s poetry. The concept these poets have poetry is closely related to the historical moment of their times. They ponder about poetry and its function, poetic thought that is nourished by a historical consciousness. This close relationship between poetry and history inevitably includes sensitivity to the social situation in their respective countries and in Latin America. These poets seek to understand the concrete reality thus coming closer to the truth of things. The study shows that these poets, based on history and poetic thought, assume their …

Maps On The Backs Of Our Eyes, Joan Paulette Robinson

"Dae Scotsmen Dream O 'Lectric Leids?" Robert Crawford's Cyborg Scotland, Alexander Burke
"Dae Scotsmen Dream O 'Lectric Leids?" Robert Crawford's Cyborg Scotland, Alexander Burke
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis applies a Cybernetic interpretation to a selection of poetry by the Scottish Informationist poet Robert Crawford, drawn mostly from two collections: A Scottish Assembly (1990) and Sharawaggi: Poems in Scots (1990). Crawford is contextualized by observing the poetic influences of Robert Burns, John Davidson, and Hugh MacDiarmid, as well as the philosophical influence of George Elder Davie’s The Democratic Intellect. This paper argues that, in response to the Two Cultures hypothesis put forth by C. P. Snow and the widely-held belief that Scotland is irrevocably fractured, the shifting boundaries of the many disparate Scottish cultures are mediated by …
Homophonic Translation, Appositional Writing, And The Monster, Ryan Landry Clark
Homophonic Translation, Appositional Writing, And The Monster, Ryan Landry Clark
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation features a combination of critical and creative work
exploring the ethics of appropriative writing and the reparative potential of homophonic translation. The opening essay examines the ethics of appropriation- based poetry and introduces the concept of what I call "appositional writing," a term to describe ethically-minded works of poetry that make use of appropriative writing methods. The next three parts of this dissertation are each appositional writing projects that make use of homophonic translation as the primary method of composition. "Arizona State Bill 1070: An Act" is a homophonic translation of the anti-immigration bill of the same name. …
Feeling With Imagination: Sympathy And Postwar American Poetry, Timothy A. Dejong
Feeling With Imagination: Sympathy And Postwar American Poetry, Timothy A. Dejong
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This dissertation examines how sympathy, defined as the act of “feeling with” another, develops within American poetics from 1950-1965 both as aesthetic strategy and as political response to Cold War culture. Re-examining the social aims of postwar poets typically either thought of as apolitical or yoked to political positions not in fact evidenced by their poems, I argue that these poets, by developing forms of sympathy that negotiate the middle space between the aesthetic conventions of late modernist poetry and the social concerns of postwar American culture, instantiate a self-questioning, often implicit form of “soft politics” that both prefigures and …
The Relief Of The Unreal Life: Poems, Colleen Robertson Abel
The Relief Of The Unreal Life: Poems, Colleen Robertson Abel
Theses and Dissertations
This collection of poems takes as its subject desire in its various guises. Religious desire--the human need to find faith and to hope for an afterlife, and the doubt and skepticism in those very needs--is braided together with more earthly desires, as well as with ruminations on artistic ambition. These poems situate themselves within the rich tradition of the postconfessional, transmuting autobiographical elements to form a narrative of marriage, pregnancy, loss and birth that anchors the book. This narrative is juxtaposed with other lyric voices to explore the connections between hunger of all kinds.

Travel For Agoraphobics, John Allen Berry
Travel For Agoraphobics, John Allen Berry
Dissertations
Travel for Agoraphobics is a collection of fifty poems accompanied by an introduction. Using both traditional and experimental forms, the poems are in conversation with each other about loneliness and isolation in an age of technologies designed to bring us closer together. The introduction addresses the influence of other writers and the process of writing and revising.
Mina Loy And The Electric Body, Debra Elizabeth Cardell
Mina Loy And The Electric Body, Debra Elizabeth Cardell
Masters Theses
Abstract Mina Loy, modernist poet and artist, experimented with theories of feminism and class within her own artwork. This creates a complex point of interpretation for the reader because of overlap and contradiction. The concept of ekphrasis, when manipulated for Loy’s context, opens possibilities of understanding Loy’s many contradictions. Since the body and material world play a central role in Loy’s art, ekphrasis is a lens through which we can begin to see the relationship between Loy’s art and writing along with her feminism.
Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson
Memory As Ecology In The Poetry Of Tomas Tranströmer, Richelle Jolene Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore how memory functions ecologically in the poetry of Tomas Tranströmer. The term ecology is useful because of its connotative associations with the natural world as well as its broader definition of being a network of relationships as they function within and relate to their environment. Throughout his oeuvre, Tranströmer positions memory as being an external presence with which he interacts primarily because he honors it as a living being and he feels a poetic responsibility to it. As such, he grapples with the challenges of representation, particularly the limitations of language. Ultimately, …
George Canning, Liberal Toryism, And Counterrevolutionary Satire In The Anti-Jacobin, Martha Thompson
George Canning, Liberal Toryism, And Counterrevolutionary Satire In The Anti-Jacobin, Martha Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most defining moments in the histories of British satire and the public sphere took place in the late 1790s in an abandoned house in Piccadilly. Here George Canning and several fellow conservatives began writing and circulating their weekly newspaper the Anti-Jacobin. Although the periodical has been critically neglected, it is a valuable model for exploring how literary (partisan) politicians attempted to form a rational and critical public sphere through their satiric poetry. Founded by George Canning and edited by William Gifford, the Anti-Jacobin seems to reflect a reactionary conservative's ideology and has been summarily dismissed because of …
The Language Of Trees, Lorraine A. Martinuik
The Language Of Trees, Lorraine A. Martinuik
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Language of Trees is a poetry collection based on a series of walks, and rooted in the experience of place on a small island off the west coast of Canada. Prose poems and a serial poem that gives the collection its title, reflect the poet's leanings towards experiment. The preface discusses poetics and the poet's technical approach to form.

We Dream Of An Age That Is Equal To Our Passions, William Winks
We Dream Of An Age That Is Equal To Our Passions, William Winks
Theses and Dissertations
We dream of an age that is equal to our passions is a series of soliloquies and ideas that look at the false narratives I tell myself in order to get out bed in the morning, at the depression that came after failed revolutions, at the unrealistic hopes of my politics, and of my desire to become a whole human being.
Hissār, Sohail Abdullah
Hissār, Sohail Abdullah
Theses and Dissertations
Hissaar is a noun and a verb, it is the periphery and the extremities, and the walls and the fortress. And it is to encircle, to wrap and to contain. This paper is an inexhaustive account of thoughts, experiences and lessons learned, of varying forms that influence my aesthetic sensibilities, my art-value system, and my art- ethical concerns. They provide for my art the impetus for its perpetual (and perhaps circular) journey. It is about finding connections between the fraying ends of free floating ideas. The following fragments explores how words make ideas, ideas make images, images make memory; memory …
Pablo And Celia, Darren Sean Jackson
Pablo And Celia, Darren Sean Jackson
Doctoral Dissertations
Pablo and Celia, my collection of lyric poems, is composed in several voices, but the personae Pablo and Celia remain the focus. The collection is a sequence formed of both discrete, untitled fragments and more traditionally titled poems that follow the narrative arc of Pablo and Celia’s relationship as they think aloud or write one another. They speak directly and generally in their own syntax and forms, but this rule is violated when they “steal” one another’s voice, as in “Celia on Celia.” There is an element of chaos in terms of formal properties between poems and voices as …
Other: Poems, Catherine Pritchard Childress
Other: Poems, Catherine Pritchard Childress
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This creative thesis is a collection of original poems entitled Other. The poems in Other reflect my study of the aesthetics of poetry as well as that of how women are represented as poets and as the subject of poems. Some of these poems are the product of my particular interest in the use of persona. Most reflect my desire to achieve self-reflection, to write from my experiences and perception, while still maintaining the universality that is an essential element of successful poems.
The critical introduction situates my poems within the framework of the poetic mode Personal Classicism—poetry that …
Conflation Or When I Say You, I Mean I, Julie Ann Strand
Conflation Or When I Say You, I Mean I, Julie Ann Strand
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Conflation or When I Say You, I Mean I is a poetic interrogation catalyzed by the ideas within Anne Carson’s Eros the Bittersweet and Georges Bataille’s Erotism: Death and Sensuality. The interrogation takes place within a form that positions failed love poems alongside poetic analyses or reflections. By doing so the erotic relationship that exists within the genre of the love poem as well as the hierarchy created between the roles of lover and beloved is put into question.
Foxfire: The Selected Poems Of Yosa Buson, A Translation, Allan Persinger
Foxfire: The Selected Poems Of Yosa Buson, A Translation, Allan Persinger
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation is a creative translation from Japanese into English of the poetry of Yosa Buson, an 18th century (1716 - 1783) poet. Buson is considered to be one of the most important of the Edo Era poets and is still influential in modern Japanese literature. By taking account of Japanese culture, identity and aesthetics the dissertation project bridges the gap between American and Japanese poetics, while at the same time revealing the complexity of thought in Buson's poetry and bringing the target audience closer to the text of a powerful and moving writer.
Currently, the only two books offering …
Strange Little Vehicles, Andrew Merecicky
Strange Little Vehicles, Andrew Merecicky
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It isn't an exploration in or an experiment regarding. It is a praxis, as a commute is the opposite of an adventure. As le chat regarde le poisson. As when one looks at anything, it becomes strange. That is, a thing (a thought, a feeling, Gertrude Stein's "piece of coffee") once considered becomes little and different. It is the world that is large and alike. It is ultimately the similarity, the recognition of which we, who feel small and unique in the grand scheme, find terrifying. Language is always, as Lyn Hejinian wrote, social; it is a vehicle.

In What Array That They They Were In And Participating Godlike Food, Thomas Jackson Wills
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
I am submitting two manuscripts for my creative dissertation, In What Array That They Were In and Participating Godlike Food. The former is a sequence of odes followed by a brief epic, followed by a cycle of verse dramas, with an ode epilogue. The latter is a book-length excerpt from an epic poem/crime novel/Menippean satire/television show/Dada collage/historical document/vatic investigation that comes in 20 page sections that are supposed to approximate the 42 minutes of an average crime show.
Samsara, Erica Anzalone
Samsara, Erica Anzalone
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In Samsara, I bring a spiritual-historical lens to art, war, feminism, religion, and the body in extremis. Although the word samsara resonates mostly within the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, meaning literally to wander through the rounds of death and rebirth, my poetics of transience and trauma crosses cultures, including Muslim, Christian, and Judaic notions of spirituality. Bosnia, Iowa, Boston, and Prague are all shifting sands within the mandala-like hourglass of this collection. My voice often issues from a working class register and speaks with rebellious power from a place of powerlessness: "E-bay nirvana, you want me to yes sir/I'll get …
Always Away, Mollie Bergeron
Always Away, Mollie Bergeron
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
At any given time, there are pages of notes and thoughts running through our minds; these have to come out in some way. In order to stay sane, to stay human, I write poems. These poems are interested in breath and space, memory and nostalgia, loss and water. Each of these ideas has its own fit as part of the poem as well as part of life and being alive. Human emotion is varied through these. Observation and perception, turned into poems through the very physical act of putting words onto a page, allow these memories and experiences to live …
Pyramid Of The Sun, James Joseph Brown
Pyramid Of The Sun, James Joseph Brown
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Pyramid of the Sun is a novel which is experimental in structure. It weaves traditional prose with original poems based on Aztec creation myths. The narrative is not strictly linear, but approaches the plot from several angles - past, present, and future - simultaneously. It comes back to its starting point at the end, like a snake devouring its own tail. The novel takes the Aztec and Mayan belief that time is circular and never-ending and reinterprets it in a contemporary, hard-edged setting that touches down at various points across the globe, including Moscow, Seville, Seoul and Las Vegas. Pyramid …
Due Partly To Inertia, Justin Lee Irizarry
Due Partly To Inertia, Justin Lee Irizarry
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the preface to Leaves of Grass Walt Whitman said, "The poets of the kosmos advance through all interpositions and coverings and turmoils and stratagems to first principles. They are of use--they dissolve poverty from its need, and riches from its conceit." My poetry aims to exist in Whitman's `kosmos' and in doing so advance through the turmoil and the strategies of certainty to something resembling principles. Politics is a common theme; it is not in an attempt to write political poetry, but an attempt to not leave anything out. Other themes throughout this manuscript include death, music, wanting, having, …
There Are Moments That Hang Suspended, Mark B. Lennon
There Are Moments That Hang Suspended, Mark B. Lennon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This project is the culmination of ten years of work in poetry. It was begun in imitation of those who impressed, not only with their fine words and dexterity with language, but also with their clear conviction in their subject material. Reflected in the works of Allen Ginsberg, Walt Whitman, and Adrienne Rich, among others, was evidence of a life lived, in Thoreau's term, deliberately. The writing of poetry seemed to be not simply a means of expression, but a goad to live a life worth examining, and to keep doing so; a progress report for a radical mind.

Overgrowth, Anna Laura Reeve
Overgrowth, Anna Laura Reeve
Masters Theses
This collection of poetry explores themes ranging from ovarian cancer and inherited disease to the fertility of the natural world, discovering the vitality of both wanted and unwanted growth. The author uses a variety of poetic forms, from prose poems to free verse, experimenting with aerated and dropped lines, employing vivid and striking images as she writes of her local ground, tensions between native and non-native flora and fauna, the spiritual life, and the female body.
