The Emotional Appeal Of Television And Its Implications For Preaching, Michael John Rattee Jan 1996

The Emotional Appeal Of Television And Its Implications For Preaching, Michael John Rattee

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study analyzes the nature, messages, and methods of television communication through the rhetorical categories of 'ethos', 'logos', and 'pathos', to determine the implications for preaching today. Television's main goal is to attract the largest audience for advertisers, and uses messages and methods that appeal to emotion, so that people experience television more than they learn from it. Deductive 'logos' is virtually absent from television, and only messages that elevate 'pathos' and 'ethos' succeed on television. The environment, values, and perceptions of everyone have been altered by television. It is the major storyteller of the culture, and has redefined society's …

Aboriginal Students And Postsecondary Education: A Participatory Exploration Of Experiences And Needs At A University And Community College In Northeastern Ontario, Wendy Darlene Young

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Aboriginal people are increasingly seeking forms of post-secondary education that meet their cultural, political, social and spiritual needs. Universities and colleges have a responsibility to become involved in the decolonization process by taking a proactive stance in relation to the changes which are required to meet these needs. The research described in this dissertation is a bicultural, participatory action project which sought to document the experiences and needs of Aboriginal students at a university and community college in North Bay, Ontario in order to lay the groundwork for new programs and services which might be developed. Research Circles and Individual …

"One Tricky Coyote": The Fiction Of Thomas King, Giselle Rene Lavalley Jan 1996

"One Tricky Coyote": The Fiction Of Thomas King, Giselle Rene Lavalley

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis evaluates the literary achievement of Thomas King from an individual Aboriginal perspective by examining specifically his novels, Medicine River and Green Grass, Running Water, with reference to his short stories. It argues that textual readings which merely impose the Western literary tradition upon Aboriginal texts invariably limit their scope of interpretation and understanding. The study of Aboriginal literature necessitates a holistic approach that involves historical, political, and cultural contextualizations.

I note briefly the cultural differences between my own response and non-Aboriginal responses, the latter mostly in the form of reviews, and proceed to analyze issues present in …

The Invisible Weavers: Women Volunteers Creating Community Fabric, Lorie Anne Fioze Jan 1996

The Invisible Weavers: Women Volunteers Creating Community Fabric, Lorie Anne Fioze

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this study I examined women's caring in community volunteer work in the context of a neighbourhood community centre. More specifically I studied what women's volunteer experience at the Chandler-Mowat Community Centre (CMCC) revealed about: (1) Motivators what motivated women to participate in community volunteer work, (2) Facilitators what personal, family organizational, community and social factors facilitated women's involvement in volunteer work, (3) Barriers what personal, family, organizational, community and social factors inhibited women's involvement in community volunteer work, (4) Positive and Negative Impacts what the positive and negative impacts of women's volunteer involvement on the women themselves, their families, …

The Life Stories Of A Woman From Rosebud: Names And Naming In 'Lakota Woman' And 'Ohitika Woman' (Mary Brave Woman Olguin, South Dakota), Larissa Petrillo Jan 1996

The Life Stories Of A Woman From Rosebud: Names And Naming In 'Lakota Woman' And 'Ohitika Woman' (Mary Brave Woman Olguin, South Dakota), Larissa Petrillo

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Lakota Woman (1991) and Ohitika Woman (1994) are the consecutive life stories of Mary Brave Woman Olguin (also known as Mary Crow Dog and Mary Brave Bird). The books portray Mary's telling of her life and its connection with Lakota history and tradition. Non-Native artist and writer, Richard Erdoes, was involved in the co-authorship of both books and recent criticism often focuses upon Erdoes' involvement in the writing process. I suggest that a reading which emphasizes Erdoes' contribution only isolates the reader from the actual subject of Lakota Woman and Ohitika Woman: Mary Brave Woman Olguin's life and the …

The Impact Of Early Presbyterian Missionary Preaching (1884-1920) On The Preaching Of The Korean Church, Sang-Hwan Kim Jan 1996

The Impact Of Early Presbyterian Missionary Preaching (1884-1920) On The Preaching Of The Korean Church, Sang-Hwan Kim

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The history of Protestant mission began when Korean people were suffering under Japanese colonial rule. The Bible was translated into Korean in Manchuria and Japan and following the first missionary Horace N. Allen (U.S. Korea missionary, 1884-1890) many Western missionaries began to arrive in Korea. As churches were built the need for Korean ministers necessitated establishment of theological seminaries and teaching of homiletics. History of preaching thus began. Charles A. Clark (U.S. Korea missionary, 1902-1948), who became the father of homiletics in Korea, taught the homiletic theories he studied earlier and his influence is still felt in Korea today. The …

Native Voices On Native Science: Mohawk Perspectives On The Concept, Practice, And Meaning Of A Knowledge Production System Rooted In Traditional Native Thought, Pamela Esther Johnson Jan 1996

Native Voices On Native Science: Mohawk Perspectives On The Concept, Practice, And Meaning Of A Knowledge Production System Rooted In Traditional Native Thought, Pamela Esther Johnson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Community psychology is strongly committed to the value of cultural relativity and diversity. Acquiring knowledge regarding cultural differences is essential if community psychology is to realize this value. This paper provides a culture specific perspective on the form and meaning of a knowledge system rooted in traditional Mohawk thought. The academic literature regarding research on Native people reveals an ethnocentric description of native reality. My premise is that research in Native communities has been ideologically biased by virtue of the interpretation of native reality from the perspective of mainstream western scientific assumptions. The ability to obtain culturally relevant knowledge hinges …

"In The Business Of Believing Women's Stories": Feminism Through Detective Fiction (Sara Paretsky, Sue Grafton), Nora Martin Jan 1996

"In The Business Of Believing Women's Stories": Feminism Through Detective Fiction (Sara Paretsky, Sue Grafton), Nora Martin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis undertakes to show the way in which texts of the genre of hard-boiled detective fiction can encourage a feminist attitude in their readers. While some critics insist that the hard-boiled genre is incompatible with feminism due to what they believe is its inherent misogyny, there are a number who have argued eloquently to the contrary. This thesis is not so much concerned with proving the compatibility of feminism with the hard-boiled genre, as it is with showing, through the examination of specific strategies of particular texts, that hard-boiled texts by women authors not only allow a feminist sensibility …

From Enmity Towards Alliance: The United States And German Demilitarization, 1942-1947, Oliver Haller Jan 1996

From Enmity Towards Alliance: The United States And German Demilitarization, 1942-1947, Oliver Haller

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines the rehabilitation of western Germany from a totalitarian enemy to a democratic partner involved in a military alliance. Previous accounts of German remilitarization focus almost exclusively on the growing Cold War tensions after 1945 and argue that the Korean War acted as the primary catalyst influencing the birth of the Bundeswehr. These historians hypothesize that the four occupying powers largely demilitarized their respective zones of occupation. This thesis evaluates this orthodox argument using the perspectives offered by post-revisionist economic historians. These historians demonstrate that Germany's industrial infrastructure suffered far less destruction through bombing and reparations than understood …

The Holocaust: A Catalyst For Theological Evolution As Exemplified By The Writing Of Dr. John T. Pawlikowski, O.S.M., David Joseph Levy Jan 1996

The Holocaust: A Catalyst For Theological Evolution As Exemplified By The Writing Of Dr. John T. Pawlikowski, O.S.M., David Joseph Levy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Beginning with James Parkes and Jules Isaac, and continuing even until this day, extensive effort has been focused on the issue of Christian-Jewish relations. The Holocaust is a topic central to those reflections. This is due to the general acceptance of the thesis that, in some fashion, Christianity can be described as having contributed to the Holocaust. To appreciate that thesis one need only consider Hitler's own remarks, made at the 1933 Concordat Conference, "I am only continuing the work of the Catholic Church: to isolate the Jews and fight their influence." One outcome of the effort has been courageous …
