Manuel Alvarez, Empire Builder Of The Southwest, Thomas E. Chavez

Manuel Alvarez was an influential figure in American expansion. A native Spaniard, he was in Mexico during the events leading to Mexican Independence. In 1824 he went to New Mexico via New York. At Santa Fe he opened a store which he would operate for the rest of his life. At the same time he became active in the fur trading business and, in 1828 tried trapping. As a trapper with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, Alvarez was quickly promoted to captain. He led forty other trappers to the present Yellowstone National Park, thus becoming one of the first men …
Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard
Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard
Honors Theses
Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor is not entirely an original work. Eleven of the twenty-five moments were either borrowed from Bach's earlier cantatas or were transcribed from the Mass into later choral works. In the process of borrowing, Bach often made significant changes in the original composition. In the preparation of this paper, each parody movement in the Mass was compared with the work from which it was drawn or, in four cases, the work drawn from it. Variants between the model and the parody were written down and classified. The resulting categories suggest insights into Bach's reasons …
Little Epics: More Lively And Choleric, Nancy Conrad Martinez
Little Epics: More Lively And Choleric, Nancy Conrad Martinez
English Language and Literature ETDs
The number and diversity of works in the mock-heroic mode have long made meaningful discussion difficult. The mode has been and continues to be a glittering, shapeless mass, obscuring all but the brightest or best-known stars in its blur of confused origins, purposes, and relationships. Setting down useful boundaries for one variety of mockheroic, the little epic, is the purpose of this study. Represented most notably by MacFlecknoe, The Dispensary, The Rape of the Lock, and The Dunciad, the little epic constitutes a small but dazzling genre that perfects the mode and epitomizes an age.
The theory of …

Glenn L. Emmons Of Gallup, Debra R. Boender
Glenn L. Emmons Of Gallup, Debra R. Boender
History ETDs
Glenn L. Emmons was Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1953 to 1961 during the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Since this was the decade during which the controversy over the policy of termination began, Emmons' administration of the Bureau of Indian Affairs was important and of interest to students of Indian policy, Questions exist concerning the nature of the man, his background, and reasons for his appointment to that post. This biography hopes to answer some of these, as well as provide some insight into Emmons' policies and programs which tended to extend government involvement with Indian tribes, contrary to …
The Contemporary Shaman, Harry Alvin Paynter Jr.
The Contemporary Shaman, Harry Alvin Paynter Jr.
Art & Art History ETDs
Craft design and fine art have been considered unrelated fields since the Renaissance. In the ensuing four hundred years the field of craft design had been debased by commercialism to the extent that art or artistic expression were moot points to the craftsman. In the later half of the twentieth century, however, a new Renaissance is taking place in the field of crafts. As a jeweler and an artist my work is part of the Craft Renaissance movement. The body of work presented here is created in the style of mystical artifacts and its roots are in non-industrial, non-western primitive …
Notes On The Formation Of A Photographic Aesthetic In Great Britain, 1839-1890, Philip R. Flower
Notes On The Formation Of A Photographic Aesthetic In Great Britain, 1839-1890, Philip R. Flower
Art & Art History ETDs
The thesis examines the development of a coherent photographic aesthetic in Great Britain during the 19th century. It proceeds from the idea that the history of photography during this period should be viewed as a series of formal approaches to the problem of how best to utilise the medium; both for the production of art and also for the dissemination of specific information. These two uses of the medium are not seen as being mutually exclusive of one another. The thesis advances the idea that both these genres of photography offer evidence of formal attitudes towards the medium itself, which …
Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele
Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele
Dissertations and Theses
Directing texts are inadequate in their various approaches to teaching the concepts of stage-composition. The goal of this thesis was to show that, for an approach to stage composition to be judged adequate, it must systematically provide the student of directing with a firm grounding in design and compositional principles as they relate to the total stage picture.
Nineteen texts were studied and their presentations of compositional principles were analyzed. Eight texts are included in an in-depth structural analysis. The texts analyzed are Fundamentals of Play Directing by Alexander Dean, The Art of Play Production by John Dolman, Play Direction …

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear
The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear
Honors Theses
In 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England. He established himself as king and began to implement his policies for complete control over the subjugated territory. The Norman invasion did not involve a large influx of people: but, rather a conquest by a man who acquired the country for himself and distributed the land to his followers. The old English aristocracy, mainly composed of the king's thegns, virtually disappeared with the conquest and was replaced by a new aristocracy.
The near disappearance of the English aristocrats and their replacement by Normans holding land in return for military service was an …

The Manuel Areu Collection Of 19th Century Zarzuelas, Mary Caroline MontañO
Music ETDs
In November of 1952, a collection of musical and dramatic manuscripts were discovered on a garbage dump in the mountainside mining town of Jerome, Arizona. They were donated to the University of New Mexico and stored at Zimmerman Library until 1973 when they were transferred to the Fine Arts Library. The majority of the manuscripts were discovered to be handcopied orchestral parts and scores of 19th-century Spanish zarzuelas with handcopied or printed librettos. The original owner of the collection was Manuel Areu (1845-1944?), singer, director and producer of the zarzuelas.
This thesis attempts to provide an historical review of the …

The Effect Of Visual Feedback On Vocal Pitch Matching, Anita R. Herron
The Effect Of Visual Feedback On Vocal Pitch Matching, Anita R. Herron
Dissertations and Theses
A review of the literature on the inaccurate singer provided strong evidence that improvement in pitch matching skill was possible. Visual feedback was found to be an effective aid in earlier studies, but none of the previous studies provided both a comparison group which had identical practice without the visual cues and a control group which received no form of practice. Such a design was used in the present study.
Thirty students at Portland State University who claimed to have considerable difficulty carrying a tune were given the opportunity to try to match Individual pitches under one of three conditions …
The Michigan Agricultural Frontier: Southeastern Region, 1820-1860, Raymond Labounty Puffer
The Michigan Agricultural Frontier: Southeastern Region, 1820-1860, Raymond Labounty Puffer
History ETDs
The paper which follows is a systematic study of the cultural and economic history of a portion of southeast Michigan during the critical phase of the first American period of development. Although a great many published and unpublished sources have addressed themselves to various aspects of this area during its territorial and early statehood years, there has been curiously little attention directed toward Michigan on a regional basis, or upon attempts to synthesize the many different facets of its physical and social history into a single work. The area of land sales has been especially neglected. It is anticipated that …
Spruille Braden: A Political Biography, Shirley N. Rawls
Spruille Braden: A Political Biography, Shirley N. Rawls
History ETDs
In 1933 President Franklin Roosevelt and Secretary of State Cordell Hull began a new kind of diplomacy in Latin America known as the Good Neighbor Policy. One key person they chose to implement this policy was Spruille Braden, a former mining engineer and financier who had spent much of his life in Latin America.
Braden was first named as a delegate to the 1933 Montevideo Conference. From late 1935 through 1938, as U.S. delegate to the Chaco Peace Conference, he helped achieve a lasting peace between Bolivia and Paraguay. As ambassador to Colombia from 1939 to 1942, he was instrumental …

The Importance Of Doctrinal Teaching In Holiness Camp Meetings, David C. Johnson
The Importance Of Doctrinal Teaching In Holiness Camp Meetings, David C. Johnson
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
Interest in this research began during the summer of 1974 with the author's involvement in a doctrine class for teenagers. The class was part of the program of the Jennings Lodge Summer Assembly Camp of the Evangelical Church of North America. Each general class had already been established, but no curriculum had been chosen. Thus it was necessary to improvise until improvement could be made. Therefore, this project began as an attempt to provide doctrinal material for teaching teens foundations of faith in the summer camp setting. It includes research into the needs of youth, as well as methods through …
Cades Cove During The Nineteenth Century, Durwood Clay Dunn
Cades Cove During The Nineteenth Century, Durwood Clay Dunn
Doctoral Dissertations
Although the Southern mountaineer has emerged as a distinctive figure in the fiction of local colorists since the 1880's, few actual historical investigations of specific locales in the region have been undertaken to examine the confusing plethora of stereotypes and hypotheses surrounding the Appalachian South. Using family records, oral history, and manuscript census returns, the present study of Cades Cove, a small mountain community in East Tennessee, attempts to remedy this situation by carefully analyzing the nature and degree of change within the community, and the extent to which cultural continuity existed throughout the nineteenth century.
Enormous economic and social …
Anais Nin's Under A Glass Bell : From Interior Fatality To Psychological Motion, John Harty
Anais Nin's Under A Glass Bell : From Interior Fatality To Psychological Motion, John Harty
Master's Theses
Most of the critic ism on Anais Nin has been an overview of her entire work. Under A Glass Bell is included but, to my knowledge, no one has explored each individual story deeply enough since Nin herself recommends Under A Glass Bell as the book to begin with when reading or studying her works. Ibelieve that her recommendation is correct because Under A Glass Bell contains the nucleus of themes which she conc entrates on in all of her works, including the Diaries.
The Bijou Theatre: 1909-1949, Robert A. Ellis
The Bijou Theatre: 1909-1949, Robert A. Ellis
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the history of the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, and to ascertain the importance it had on the community during the first four decades of its existence. The wealth of talent which played on its stage during these forty years of legitimate drama (much of it coming from touring stock companies) make the theatre a landmark within the city of Knoxville.
This study should help further the resolve of the general populace of Knoxville to preserve the Bijou as an important monument to Knoxville's cultural heritage. The renovation of the old …

Effects Of Human Relations Training On The Social, Emotional, And Moral Development Of Students, With Emphasis On Human Relations Training Based Upon Religious Principles, Stephen R. Covey
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of human relations training on 222 students in organizational behavior labs were measured in this study. Eighty students were randomly assigned to one of four sections taught by the same instructor--two traditional sections and two stewardship sections-in a Solomon Four-Group Experimental Design. The two stewardship sections used individualized goal selection and accountability procedures with discussions and readings incorporating religious principles. Four data-gathering instruments were used to measure the social, emotional, and moral development of the students . A one-way analysis of variance on pre- and posttest questionnaires from all 222 students showed no significant differences among any of …
William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe
William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines the work of William Dunbar, a sixteenth century Scottish poet, in order to demonstrate that he is not, as he is often styled, a Scottish Chaucerian. It makes an analysis of the chronological occurrence of forms and themes in his poetry which indicates that his work can be divided into three periods: (1) an initial period in which his work deals with traditional matter and forms; (2) a second period in which he develops a distinctly personal poetic voice; and (3) a final period in which he perfects this personal voice and then relinquishes it for a …
