Sebastien Rale Vs. New England: A Case Study Of Frontier Conflict, Kenneth M. Morrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Author's original abstract: A study was made of the Jesuit missionary, Sebastien Rale, and his role in New England-New France relations. French and English primary and secondary materials were examined to give the broadest possible view of the man and to place him in historical context.
It was found that Sebastien Rale was not an agent of New France. The conflicting opinions surrounding the mission of Norridgewock and the border war of the 1720's were traced to the problems of Massachusetts-Abnaki relations. Rale's frequent and testy letters to the government of the Bay Colony were blunt reactions to what he …

The Pre-Court Career Of John Marshall Harlan., Thomas L. Owen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The thesis deals with the political career of John Marshall Harlan prior to his appointment in 1877 as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. Throughout the majority of those twenty-three active years in Kentucky politics, Harlan was an adamant defender of the slave system, and despite the fact that he had been a strong Unionist during the Civil War, he resisted emancipation of the slaves and opposed every effort to gain civil rights for the blacks once they were freed. When Harlan became a Republican in 1868, he hurriedly reversed himself, and became a consistent advocate of …

For most subject matter the ideal classroom situation would allow a one-to-one relationship between instructor and student. In teaching basic photography this is especially true because of the great number of steps involved in producing a finished photograph and because each step must be done correctly to achieve good results. Time won't permit the instructor to effectively follow each student through all the steps involved, and, ideally the student should be allowed to work at his or her own speed. The one-to-one relationship therefore, isn't possible in most photography classes and, for that reason, something is needed to take the …

King Philip's War In Maine, John O. Noble Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study was made of the Indian war in Maine, which started in the late summer of 1675 and continued until the spring of 1678. The causes and consequences of the war are presented as they relate to the situation on the Northern colonial frontier (Maine), and as they contrast to the war and social situation in southern New England.
The two major campaigns of the war in Maine are examined in detail. Three political questions are discussed as related to the war: (1) the legal control of Maine (2) the support of the war effort by the United Colonies …
Freedom In Heidegger., John Duffy Trager 1937-
Freedom In Heidegger., John Duffy Trager 1937-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis represents an investigation into the meaning and development of freedom in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Part I deals primarily with Sein und Zeit. Dasein, human reality, is defined both as a finite, thrown being-in-the-world and as a free entity, projecting its possibilities. Dasein achieves authenticity in the renunciation of the crowd and by embracing its ultimate possibility--death. The conclusion to Part I argues for the identity, in Heidegger's thought, of finite freedom and temporality. Part II deals with Gelassenheit, a work of Heidegger's latter period. Freedom is expressed in a new vocabulary. Man must release himself but …
