The candidate selected the recital and recital report as the master's project on the basis that they would effectively improve his musicianship, as well as bolster his teaching background, performance skills, teaching techniques, and general musical knowledge.

The recital included one major work on the B-flat clarinet , an alto saxophone solo, a clarinet quartet, and a woodwind trio. In addition, clarinet and saxophone solos were performed by two of the writer's advanced students. The compositions were chosen because of their musical value and variety.

It included the Prelude and Fugue from the Sonata in g minor for unaccompanied violin by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Aaron Copland, Concerto no. III in b minor by Camille Saint-Saens, "On Wings of Song" by Felix Mendelssohn, and "Perpe tual Motion" by Ottakar Novacek. Several objectives were to be accomplished in writing this paper. Among these was the intent to achieve a better understanding of the complete poetic and musical lyricism unique to Schumann's songs, particularly those composed in 1840, the period in which the Frauenliebe und-leben wee produced. From ancient times to the present, music has been composed for instrumental combinations as well as for single instruments. The manner in which these combinations were utilized depended upon current compositional practices, especially those regarding form. In the Baroque Period instrumental ensembles were formed according to the composer's discretion. The tone color embodiment of a particular musical work was set more by the composer's choice of instruments to be included in the ensemble than in his use of instruments as independent tone color sources .
