A Survey Of Published American Radio Drama, Kenneth D. Wright Aug 1951

A Survey Of Published American Radio Drama, Kenneth D. Wright

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction)

Radio broadcasting is a product of the twentieth century, taking its place beside the automobile, the airplane, two world wars, and now television as an influence upon the people of the world. Radio has had a short but colorful life, a reign studded with court fights, money-making, good and bad drama, music and showmanship, and a fair share or public acceptance and criticism.

Radio broadcasting is a composite or music programs, news reports, dramatic programs, commercial announcements, and comedy features. The American people listen to all of these programs at various times. Radio has become …

Non Carborundum Whimsicali, Thomas Stanley Haynes Aug 1951

Non Carborundum Whimsicali, Thomas Stanley Haynes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This composition for orchestra was performed as a ballet under the title "Big Top" with the Modern Dance Group of College of the Pacific on May 24 and 25, 1951. The orchestra for the performance was made up of two pianos, a banjo, tympani, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, trumpet, two trombones, and tuba. In this final setting a larger orchestra is involved.

The piece was cast in sonata allegro form because of the principle of contrasting themes and thematic development which characterizes this form.. I wanted to present two very contrasting moods, one of primitive brutal force, the other …

The Public Career Of William B. Bate, William N. Chesney Aug 1951

The Public Career Of William B. Bate, William N. Chesney

Masters Theses

PREFACE

William B. Bate, soldier, governor, and United States Senator, had a long and active public career, lasting from 1846 to 1905. When one considers the important and far-reaching events that transpired within this period, it can readily be seen that a work of this length cannot tell a complete story. Consequently I have tried to deal with Bate mainly in his relationship to the history of Tennessee.

Having been interested in the history of Tennessee and of the South since I was a child, I chose Bate as the subject of this thesis. My interest was also increased by …

A Historical Study Of The Armory Show Of 1913 As A Factor In The Development Of American Art, Jurdan G. Myers Jul 1951

A Historical Study Of The Armory Show Of 1913 As A Factor In The Development Of American Art, Jurdan G. Myers

Art & Art History ETDs

For many years lecturers and art historians have been aware of the importance of the Armory Show (The international Exhibition of Modern Art) held in New York in 1913. This awareness has not been sufficient to stimulate the presentation of the entire history of the Armory show. Although most lecturers and art historians dismiss the exhibit by saying that it was important, there are a few who have given as much as ten pages to a discussion of the show.

An Introduction To The Poetry Of T.S. Eliot : A Selective Handbook, Jean Katherine Collins Jul 1951

An Introduction To The Poetry Of T.S. Eliot : A Selective Handbook, Jean Katherine Collins

Master's Theses

T. S. Eliot, one of the most discussed poets of our time, has registered a deep and sincere concern for the plight of modern society. That concern is mirrored in his poetry where he has spoken his message to those who will hear it. He seems to have put a supersensitive finger on the pulse of the world's ills, and has suggested what he believes to be the only solution.

Louisiana Acadian Handicrafts, Valex Richard Jun 1951

Louisiana Acadian Handicrafts, Valex Richard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It was the purpose of the writer to make a study of the Acadian handicraft work and to determine its role in the settlement of Louisiana. It was the problem to secure authoritative information concerning the Acadian handicraft work as it is being done today. This required discovery of each craft’s origin, brief tracing of its development, and its value to the Acadian people. To make this craft study, the writer visited the Acadian settlement in Southwestern Louisiana, interviewed officials, watched the native Acadian craftsmen at work, inspected equipment, took photographs of the craft designs, questioned producer or owner as …

Indigenous Philosophy In The Valley Of Mexico, John F. Newcomer Jun 1951

Indigenous Philosophy In The Valley Of Mexico, John F. Newcomer

Philosophy ETDs

This study has been undertaken in the hope of helping to open new avenues of research in both philosophy and anthropology, avenues that have heretofore been largely overlooked. It has used as an example the pre-Conquest culture-complex of the Valley of Mexico. It is not intended to be an exhaustive exposition of every aspect of that complex, for that would take it out of the realm of philosophy and too far into that of anthropology. It is rather an examination of the salient features of Aztec culture in a philosophical light. It begins with a discussion of primitive philosophy in …

A Critical Study Of The Evidence Pertaining To Certain Disputed Sites In Palestine, Erich Kiehl Jun 1951

A Critical Study Of The Evidence Pertaining To Certain Disputed Sites In Palestine, Erich Kiehl

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the following chapters, we will draw on the observations and findings of these four periods to help to determine the validity or doubtfulness of the various identifications of the sites in question: Bethsaida, Mount of Beattitudes, Cana, Bethany beyond the Jordan, Emmaus, and the Calvary-Tomb area. Special reference will be made to the traditions, on which archaeologists later draw for information. We shall see that, however important traditions may be, it is dangerous to over-emphasize their importance. The occasion will present itself to cite a number of instances of this fact.

However, much of the material was drawn and applies also to confirmation instruction in other church bodies and to similar practices in the non-liturgical churches.

The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel Jun 1951

The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The words of institution for the Lord's Supper can be taken absolutely literally. The only words which require any interpretation are “body” and “blood." These can be interpreted only in the light of the concept of "communion.” On the basis of the text and in harmony with the Lutheran confessions this leads to three points, often called the Shibboleths of the doctrine.

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper is an exegetical study of the eight passages in this Epistle which have a. reference to the blood, suffering, or sacrifice of Christ. In chapters two, three, and four the writer will examine particularly those passages which state the doctrinal viewpoint of Peter concerning the suffering and death of Christ. Luther And Brunner On Creation, Henry Reimann Jr Jun 1951

Luther And Brunner On Creation, Henry Reimann Jr

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis grew out of several desires. One was to study a phrase of Luther’s theology. Another was to become more a acquainted with a representative modern theologian. A study of the theocentric theology in Luther and Brunner was suggested to meet these desires. This very broad subject; was limited to one specific doctrine in Luther's and Brunner’s theology, the doctrine of Creation.

An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler Jun 1951

An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler

Bachelor of Divinity

Working with adults has proved to me an enjoyable and rewarding experience. This thesis is written with a desire to help give adults that which has proved to be a blessing to me and to fulfill in their lives this same joy which they may have never known.

The author does not pretend to be an authority on this subject matter, but is writing on adult confirmation materials merely because of his love in this field. Neither does he intend to exhaust all the material related to this paper, but merely to present an overview in order to evaluate some …

Areas Of Agreement In The Three World Conferences On Faith And Order, John George Huber Jun 1951

Areas Of Agreement In The Three World Conferences On Faith And Order, John George Huber

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the areas of agreement which have been achieved by the three World Conferences on Faith and Order. Interest in this problem stems from two existential situations. The first lies in the fact that the church body with which the writer is affiliated, the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, is not an active participant in the so-called ecumenical movement, as that movement finds its expression in the World Council of Churches. The reasons for this position which are most frequently cited fall under the broad category of "doctrine.” This Lutheran body, along with the other …

A Survey Of Problems Confronting The Christian Missionary To The Rural Areas Of Japan, Paul H. Pallmeyer Jr Jun 1951

A Survey Of Problems Confronting The Christian Missionary To The Rural Areas Of Japan, Paul H. Pallmeyer Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

In the following pages an attempt has been made to investigate these problems. No effort has been made to discuss the methods that have been used to deal with them, but where these problems have been solved or have been brought closer to solution owing to certain circumstances, the author has tried to take cognizance of this fact. This study cannot be exhaustive as will become apparent especially in Chapter IV, which deals with the religious life of the country people.

Martin Luther The Formative Years, Erwin A. Gerken Jun 1951

Martin Luther The Formative Years, Erwin A. Gerken

Bachelor of Divinity

As one thinks of this great Reformer, this man of God, theologian, Bible translator, catechist, hymnist, bold champion of the freedom of the conscience, founder of the Lutheran Church, leader of the Reformation which carried Christendom back to the Bible - one hesitates to attempt to write a thesis on his formative years. Yet it is so arresting and inspiring, that in joy, yet with all humility, I shall attempt in the following pages to describe this man and trace his development in thought and life which led to the posting of the Ninety-five Theses on October 31, 1517.

Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger Jun 1951

Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger

Bachelor of Divinity

The present thesis cannot do full justice to that comprehensive title for the simple reason that the field of form-criticism is far too broad and complex for the writer to treat it exhaustively in one paper. This thesis will attempt in part to delineate for the reader what form-criticism is and how it works.

Paul's Concept Of Christ As The Wisdom Of God, Bernhard Kurzweg Jun 1951

Religious Attitudes In The Young Men As Encountered In The U S Army, Edward G. Deffner Jun 1951

Religious Attitudes In The Young Men As Encountered In The U S Army, Edward G. Deffner

Bachelor of Divinity

These pages represent the observations of an Army Chaplain. They state impressions formed over a protracted period and give certain conclusions based on these observations. It should be stated at the very beginning that no claim is made for infallibility, and it is recognized that some persons would debate some points, deny others. The very nature of the subject makes this inevitable. We are dealing with a subject in which statistics have little meaning. Personal observations and impressions may be questioned. In these chapters the writer claims only to present the subject as it appears to him, others may agree …

Contemporary Roman Catholic Reactions To The Lutheran Liturgical Movement, Irvin Arkin Jun 1951

Contemporary Roman Catholic Reactions To The Lutheran Liturgical Movement, Irvin Arkin

Bachelor of Divinity

The fundamental reason why this topic was chosen is a rather deep rooted curiosity possessed by the majority of Lutheran liturgiologists as to Rome's views and reactions to the Lutheran Liturgical Movement. This 1iturgical curiosity is whetted and agitated by the present liturgical movement being carried on in the Roman Church under the influence of the German Benedictines and the Austrian Augustinians. Such names as Ellard, Reinhold, and Hellriegel immediately bring to mind the vast task of restoring meaning to the liturgy for the Roman laity which these men are undertaking in this country.

An Analysis Of The Extent Of Growth In Doctrinal Knowledge Of St Louis Children In The Nine Months After Confirmation, Donald William Backus Jun 1951

An Analysis Of The Extent Of Growth In Doctrinal Knowledge Of St Louis Children In The Nine Months After Confirmation, Donald William Backus

Bachelor of Divinity

In an effort to determine a partial answer to the question whether or not children grow in doctrinal knowledge and understanding during the post-confirmation period, the following study was made among St. Louis children over the period of nine months after confirmation. Inasmuch, as the study confines itself to children in St. Louis, to a specific type of material, generalizations should be made cautiously. It would not necessarily be valid, for example, without careful comparison of all the variables, to conclude that children in a small rural parish in Texas would show the same rate or direction of growth that …

A Comprehensive Survey Of The Problems Of Old Age, Past And Present Solutions Offered For Them, And The Obligation Of The Church With Regard To Them, William Henry Lehmann Jr Jun 1951

A Comprehensive Survey Of The Problems Of Old Age, Past And Present Solutions Offered For Them, And The Obligation Of The Church With Regard To Them, William Henry Lehmann Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

Many secular agencies are delving into this problem. Instead of pointing the way as prophet, the church has been content to follow in the wake. The purpose of this thesis is to stimulate the church and its charitable agencies to find better more adequate means to care for the aged Christians. Insurance companies are aware of the increasing number of aged. Political parties are aware of the potential voting strength they have. The church must also be aware of their needs and requirements, and be prepared to fill them on a much grander scale than ever before.

The Date Of The Exodus, Enno Theodore Claus Jun 1951

The Date Of The Exodus, Enno Theodore Claus

Bachelor of Divinity

In determining the date of the exodus, one finds little direct evidence outside the Bible record. Egypt was indeed constantly in contact with Palestine from the time of Joseph (or even of Abraham) until the fugitives from the Babylonian conquest sought refuge there, and one might have hoped to find some reference to Jewish history in the Egyptian records. It is natural that the Bible scholar look for some reference to the exodus in particular. For the Exodus was one of the foremost events that took place in the history of the Israe1ites. All through the Old Testament, constant reference …
