The Positivism Of Auguste Comte, Michael J. Czernecki Aug 1938

The Positivism Of Auguste Comte, Michael J. Czernecki

Bachelors’ Theses

A man lives according to the philosophy of life he holds. There have been many philosophers of prominence that have been studied, read and quoted but few were as interesting as Comte. By his great diligence and thinking, Comte was driven to a mental unbalance but he recuperated to finish his work on a social reconstruction of the days after the French Revolution. He had a great idea, if it would only have worked out, but alas, his basic hypothesis was wrong and he had no verification for his opinions.

The title that was selected was done so with the …

Senate Action On The Omnibus Statehood Bill Of 1902, Beatrice Arline Cottrell Jul 1938

Senate Action On The Omnibus Statehood Bill Of 1902, Beatrice Arline Cottrell

History ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to trace the Statehood Bill of 1902 through the Senate, giving a brief picture of the leaders and most active participants in the debates, presenting the major arguments of the two opposing factions, and relating the methods used to bring about the defeat of the measure. Through an examination of the parties and policies of the Senators who took leading roles in this life-drama, an attempt has been made to determine the extent to which politics, sectional interests, and personal concerns of the politicians were influencing factors in the dispute.

The Indian Removal Beyond The Mississippi: An Episode In The American Attitude Toward The Aborigines, M. Alacoque Jul 1938

The Indian Removal Beyond The Mississippi: An Episode In The American Attitude Toward The Aborigines, M. Alacoque

Bachelors’ Theses

The Indian Question baa been and still is a problem in the minds of many people. Books condoling the treatment Indians received at the hands of the whites and books censuring their treatment of the settlers have been written and read by the public. There are two sides to every question. The fact is that wrongs were perpetrated, tolerated, and executed on both sides. In most cases the fact also has been discovered that the whites were the cause of friction or the unjust aggressors. This holds true especially in regard to the land grabbing policy of the settlers. Treaties …

The Statehood Policy Of Albert J. Beveridge: 1901-1911, Charles Edgar Maddox Jun 1938

Shakespeare's Use Of The Ghost In His Tragedies, John Carl Burcham Jun 1938

Shakespeare's Use Of The Ghost In His Tragedies, John Carl Burcham

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this study is to set forth the idea, already conceded generally, that Shakespeare was a supreme dramatic artist; that he became supreme through creative genius that affected all that came under his magic hand; that the purpose of his creative efforts was to produce a poetic, or dramatic, illusion. And the focal point of this paper will be that the ghost in Shakespeare was, in his own mind, as much his own creation as was any other dramatic device he used.

Innovations In The Vocabulary Of Christopher Marlowe. A Dictionary Of New Words, Word Meanings, Forms And Functions, Urvin Rundle Jun 1938

Innovations In The Vocabulary Of Christopher Marlowe. A Dictionary Of New Words, Word Meanings, Forms And Functions, Urvin Rundle

English Language and Literature ETDs

The present study proposes to fill this gap in our knowledge of Marlowe’s attitudes by an objective study of the relationship between elements in his diction and the principal language movements of his time. Since these movements are all characterized by innovations of words, word-meanings, forms, and functions, our study resolves itself into an examination of such innovations in the language of Marlowe.

The Indians Of New Mexico In The Civil War, Mary Bewley Jun 1938

The Indians Of New Mexico In The Civil War, Mary Bewley

History ETDs

This paper is a study of the place of the New Mexico Indians in the Civil War and of their relationship to the governments involved. The part which New Mexico played in the struggle between the North and South was so overshadowed by the conflict in the East that little mention of it is made in general accounts. The Indian as a participant has received even less consideration.

Some Phases Of The Economic Policy Of The Confederation Congress, 1781-1785, Horace Bernard Smith Jun 1938

Some Phases Of The Economic Policy Of The Confederation Congress, 1781-1785, Horace Bernard Smith

Masters Theses

The story of the efforts of the Confederation Congress to direct the steps of the "Babe of the Revolution" during the critical period of its early infancy is somewhat like the story of the mother who knows what the sick child in her arms needs to effect his recovery but is powerless to obtain the remedy. Long before the meeting of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, many leaders in Congress knew that ultimately more power must be given to the central government if the United States were to take its rightful place among the nations of the world.

No attempt …

A Study Of Character Tradition In The Comedy Of Humours By Ben Jonson To The Year 1602, Fern Hogue Mitchell

English Language and Literature ETDs

The writer's objective in this study is to show that some of the same elements used by Ben Jonson had been used by early English dramatists, and that Humour as a character trait had already been used before the presentation of the comedies of Jonson.

A Brief History Of Roosevelt County New Mexico, Henry E. Morgan May 1938

A Brief History Of Roosevelt County New Mexico, Henry E. Morgan

History ETDs

American Public Opinion And The League Of Nations, 1918-1920, Jay G. Gentry May 1938

American Public Opinion And The League Of Nations, 1918-1920, Jay G. Gentry

History ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the character of American public opinion concerning the league of Nations during the period from December, 1918 to March 19, 1920, in which the issue of the League was one of the paramount subjects before the American people. In this connection attention was paid to the nature of the arguments presented, whether they were in favor, against, or only partially for the league, and whether each group remained steadfast to its preliminary view. Further, attention was given to the academic quality of the arguments of each group. The thesis itself has been …

The Indian In Southwestern Fiction, Ella Brice Morris Kennedy May 1938

The Indian In Southwestern Fiction, Ella Brice Morris Kennedy

English Language and Literature ETDs

To the writer of fiction who has his ear to the ground, the recent multiplication of books in Indian fictional literature in the Southwest offers both a hint and a challenge. For years the growth of Indian fiction in the Southwest was slow and its product unimportant, and this in spite of the fact that excellent examples were set by both Helen Hunt Jackson and Adolf Bandelier . Perhaps the primitive mind was thought too rudimentary for the complex psychological studies popular in the closing years of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.

Trends In Form In Recent Women Poets, Carl C. Nelson May 1938

The purpose of this study is to touch upon these sources only briefly and to consider in some detail the likenesses and differences of four selected versions written since the invention of the printing press. Especial emphasis will be given the handling of the three chief characters: Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot. The first version is the long prose one of Sir Thomas Malory called Le Morte D'Arthur, which was published by Caxton in 1485. The other three versions, modern and written in poetic form, are: Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King, published in 1889; Edwin Arlington Robinson's Lancelot, published …

History Of The Kansas Mennonites With A Study Of Their European Background, Victor C. Seibert May 1938

History Of The Kansas Mennonites With A Study Of Their European Background, Victor C. Seibert

Master's Theses

Many books have been written on Mennonite history, but these deal largely with the religious aspect of their life. The purpose of this thesis is to present the social, moral, economic and political aspects of their migrations and life, not only of their early centuries, but of the present time. Only enough of the religious element will be presented to give a general modern knowledge of their religious beliefs which in turn influence their life in general. Particularly will it be stressed how these people have influenced the history of Kansas. This thesis was written for the purpose of preserving …

A Study Of The Administration And Organization Of The High School Band In Western Kansas, Paul H. Andree May 1938

A Study Of The Administration And Organization Of The High School Band In Western Kansas, Paul H. Andree

Master's Theses

This study is a scientific investigation to determine the educational values of band instruction as a part of the curriculum as well as the accepted methods of procedure, organization and administration of the high school band in Western Kansas. It is obvious that in such an extensive survey as this, it is necessary that the factors involved be limited to certain particular phases of the problem. For this reason and since the greatest outward appearance of advance in the band movement has been made in the past decade in Western Kansas the present survey will present the situation as found …

The Jeffersons In America : A Study Of The Economic, Social, And Political Background Of Thomas Jefferson's Ancestors, Henry Snellings Jr. May 1938

The Jeffersons In America : A Study Of The Economic, Social, And Political Background Of Thomas Jefferson's Ancestors, Henry Snellings Jr.

Honors Theses

Why is it that some men are born and live and die, yet we never hear of them, or even know they exist; and on the other hand, one man, by merely the statement of an idea make his name immortal, and his actions unite a nation behind him and set an example for the world? Most men's graves are neglected and bare, save for the attentions of their loved ones and friends; others become a shrine reverently visited by a whole people.

St. Louis In The Santa Fe Trade, Ruth A. Leeper May 1938

St. Louis In The Santa Fe Trade, Ruth A. Leeper

History ETDs

Many works have been written concerning the Santa Fe trade and the various traders who had a part in carrying it on; but to the writer's knowledge no one has written an account of the part which St. Louis had in this great commerce. Writers generally state the Santa Fe was the western end of the trail and Franklin of Independence was the eastern end. St. Louis was situated off the highway, as it were; and, although she might have participated in the trade, being off the highway, it is usually judged that her part in it was slight. The …

Chargis A Study On The Word For Grace In The New Testament, Robert Zorn May 1938

Chargis A Study On The Word For Grace In The New Testament, Robert Zorn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The scope of this present study is not to be distinctly Doctrinal, or historical, tracing the doctrine of grace and its various aberrations, through history, much as such a study would be interesting and instructive. That would take us too far afield. It is our purpose to confine ourself to an examination of the word χ͔χ́ρ͔ις itself, and to trace its use in the New Testament. Seeing the importance of the Doctrine of Grace, it is essential that we study the divinely revealed record, to see how the word is used. This must ever be the basis for all doctrine, …

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians, (A) Under Tribal Organization And Government, (B) Under The Eccleastical Administration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Exemplified At The Washakie Colony, Utah, Joshua T. Evans May 1938

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians, (A) Under Tribal Organization And Government, (B) Under The Eccleastical Administration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Exemplified At The Washakie Colony, Utah, Joshua T. Evans

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Northwestern Shoshone Indians is the tribe of Indians that inhabited the territory north of the Great Salt Lake comprising the northern part of Utah and the Southern part of Idaho. The Indians have loose boundary lines, yet we can definitely state that this tribe occupied the territory from the Weber river on the South to the Snake river on the North; from Bear Lake and Bear river on the East to Raft river and Goose creek on the West. Their confines would take in Weber, Rich, Box Elder, Cache, and part of Morgan, counties in Utah; and Bear Lake, …

The Life And Teachings Of John The Baptist, Reinhold Mueller Apr 1938

The Life And Teachings Of John The Baptist, Reinhold Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

Thus it is the office of John• which we honor. The office of John was first of all to make the world humble, to call people to repentance and make them confess their sins, that is, to preach the Law. Secondly he was to preach forgiveness of sins and salvation, the sweet Gospel with all it’s comfort. Therefore he who reads Walther's "Gesets und Evangelium" may do well to study the teachings of John at the same time, and he will find it an excellent collateral reading tor his study. Of course we know that there are extremes on both …

St Paul's Use Of The Word Πνευμα, Paul Meyer Apr 1938

St Paul's Use Of The Word Πνευμα, Paul Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

No one who studies the writings of St. Paul for any length of time can fail to note the frequent recurrence of this word and the importance which attaches to a correct understanding of its various shades of meaning. It occurs 149 times in the thirteen letters commonly ascribed to Paul, and, while there is in a study of Paul's conception of ηνε̂υμα a rich supply of material for investigation alike by the philosopher, the philologist, and the theologian, it is in the last field that its greatest value lies. Without a correct understanding of what Paul meant by the …

The Social Outlook Of The Lutheran Church, Richard Huegli Apr 1938

The Social Outlook Of The Lutheran Church, Richard Huegli

Bachelor of Divinity

I am not writing with the thought of instituting a church-wide swing toward the "social Gospel ", or even with the hope of a sudden plunge of the church into the sphere of sociology. Our church is definitely Scriptural, so it is my purpose to bring out on the basis of the biblical background for social work, the extent into which our church has delved into social service, and a few humble suggestions for greater service to man and thus to God. It is the hope that such specific emphasis upon our present labors in this field will make us …

Gnosticism And Its Conflict With Christianity, Gerhardt Nitz Apr 1938

Gnosticism And Its Conflict With Christianity, Gerhardt Nitz

Bachelor of Divinity

The study of such a movement as Gnosticism is doubly important to the student of' theology. This is a phase of history which greatly influenced the church in its infancy. It has left marks upon the church which will never be erased. Moreover, a study of this heresy is essential for the proper understanding of the New Testament. Again, the influence of Gnosticism, as will be pointed out later continued for many centuries. Such a deeply rooted, powerful, paganistic tendency cannot be lightly passed by.

An Introductory Study Of The Terms Used Of Idols In The Old Testament, Roland Dede Apr 1938

An Introductory Study Of The Terms Used Of Idols In The Old Testament, Roland Dede

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis, as is implied in the title, is to present an introductory study of the terns used of idols in the Old Testament. It is needless to say that no attempt has been made even to approximate an exhaustive presentation of all, or any single one of the forty-eight terms which cone into consideration. Indeed, almost any one of the terms would be found upon thorough study in itself to provide sufficient material for an acceptable thesis. We have, therefore, confined our attention to just those facts which we thought were strictly essential for at least …

A Comparison Of Ephesians With Colossians, Martin Haendschke Apr 1938

A Comparison Of Ephesians With Colossians, Martin Haendschke

Bachelor of Divinity

In beginning a study of these two epistles of St. Paul one begins to understand what is meant by the “unfathomable wisdom or God.” As one delves deeper into the text, one must certainly realize that our human wisdom is indeed puny and inadequate; in fact, not even worthy to be termed wisdom! However, this is not to be a dissertation on the wisdom of man, nor is it in the least way to indicate that man can fully understand these great truths of Scripture as we find them in these two beautifully written epistles, but it is to attempt …

God's Manifestation As Jehovah In Exodus 3-15, 18, Willis Laetsch Apr 1938

God's Manifestation As Jehovah In Exodus 3-15, 18, Willis Laetsch

Bachelor of Divinity

It is remarkable that in the first two chapters of Exodus the expression "the Lord” is not once used. There only "God" is found; cp. the last three verses of chapter 2, where "God" is used five times in quick succession. Due to this notable lack of "the Lord" and the predominance of "God" in Genesis and the first two chapters of Exodus, critics have devised the theory of two authors, the Elohist and the Jahvist, the former in his record using the expression Elohim and the latter Jahweh. However, that is only the rationalistic point of view. In comparison …
