History Of The Albuquerque Indian School, Lillie Mckinney

History ETDs

Introduction

The civilization of the American Indian has been slow, difficult and expensive for our government. Different administrations have tried to different policies. Usually some method of force was used down to 1876. Force meant the final extinction of the race. About the only education that filtered in among the savages was the result of the labors of the heroic missionaries who established schools among them from 1819-1876 subsidized by meager sums from the government.

The greatest pioneer missionary among the Indians of the Rocky Mountain area was Sheldon Jackson of the Northern Presbyterian Church from 1838-1909, He has been …

As early in American history as the administration of Andrew Jackson the laboring class was becoming conscious of its strength and demanding legislation for its social and economic improvement. Trade unions were formed. strikes were called, and the laborers sought various measures of relief from the state legislatures.

The Great Awakening In The United States, Richard C. Stuckmeyer May 1934

The Great Awakening In The United States, Richard C. Stuckmeyer

Bachelor of Divinity

In America today, customary usage interprets the term revival as generally applying to special religious services, protracted for a term of days or weeks, in which unusual efforts are put forth to reach the unconverted for the purpose of bringing them to repentance and winning them to lives of Christian faith and service. It is in this regard also that the Great Awakening has been termed a revival, for it extended over a period of years wherein special emphasis was put on emotional preaching for the purpose of arousing people to a rebirth of religious life. This fact will be …

The American Short Story From 1865 To 1900, Wendel W. Crosby May 1934

The American Short Story From 1865 To 1900, Wendel W. Crosby

Bachelors’ Theses

Toe purpose of this thesis is to trace the development of the .American short story from about 1865 to about 1900. I propose to do this by dividing the material studied into four periods and then to weigh, examine, and compare the chief exponents of the American short story during each period. The divisions are: The Period Following the Civil War, of which I shall consider the stories of Bret Hart, Aldrich, Twain and James; The Era of Localized Romance, of which the stories of Cable and Jewett will be considered; The Reign of Dialect, dominated by Murfree. Harris and …

The Diety Of Christ In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Martin Scharlemann Apr 1934

The Diety Of Christ In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Martin Scharlemann

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis shall, therefore, be a twofold one: first, to demonstrate that the Epistle to the Hebrews does teach the Deity of Christ (matter); and, secondly, to show how this truth is taught (manner). That purpose will be executed in a combination of dogmatical and exegetical methods. Exegesis, must furnish the content; Dogmatics the outline. No improvement can be made upon the conventional dogmatical contention that the Deity of Christ is demonstrable from the fact that (1) divine names are applied to Him, that (2) divine attributes are ascribed to Him, that (3) divine works are attributed …

The Negro Problem In The South, Sidney T. Matthews Jr Apr 1934

The Negro Problem In The South, Sidney T. Matthews Jr

Honors Theses

Among the chief problems which vexed the country for the last century and threaten to give yet more trouble in the future, is what is usually termed "The Negro Questions." To the south, it has been for nearly seventy years the chief public question, overshadowing all others, and withdrawing her from due participation in the direction and benefit of the National Government. It has kept alive section feeling, has inflamed partisanship, distorted party policies, barred complete reconciliation, cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and hundreds if not thousands of lives, and stands ever ready, like Banquo's ghost, to burst forth …

Antecedents Of The Common Order Of Service, Daniel E. Poellot Apr 1934

Antecedents Of The Common Order Of Service, Daniel E. Poellot

Bachelor of Divinity

I have restricted the scope of this treatise to the developments of that part of our Common Service which is commonly known as the Service of the Word, in the Ancient, Medieval, and Reformation Periods, beginning with the Scriptural sources of those rubrics, and ending with illustrations of practices as given in the Lutheran Kirchenordnungen of the 16th century. Later references are more incidental. Furthermore, the ceremonial of the Common Service also lies beyond the scope of this essay, as also the hymnology of the Lutheran Church is a field for itself.

The Prophets Of The New Testament Church, Gerhardt C. Asmus Apr 1934

The Prophets Of The New Testament Church, Gerhardt C. Asmus

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study, therefore, is to find out as much as possible about the prophets of the New Testament Church, to find out who they were, where they were found, and what was their function, and what was their influence in the early Christian Church. The study is so organized as to give the reader a brief overview of the prophetic institution prior to the time of the New Testament Church first, as this will lend to a better understanding of those chapters which speak of the New Testament prophets themselves. Whenever Scripture is quoted, the Authorized Version …

The Concept Of Hope In The New Testament, Oswald W. Mieger Apr 1934

The Concept Of Hope In The New Testament, Oswald W. Mieger

Bachelor of Divinity

We have prefixed this beautiful expression of the Christian’s Hope in full because it delineates the one point which we wish to emphasize in this thesis, namely, that the hope which is truly Christian rests solely upon Christ, and in particular upon the merits of His glorious resurrection from the dead, by virtue of which our hope is of inestimable value and worth. It is a fitting forethought for our consideration of the CONCEPT OF HOPE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.

The Musical Rendition Of The Psalms In The First Temple, Lawson Fackler Knight Apr 1934

The Musical Rendition Of The Psalms In The First Temple, Lawson Fackler Knight

Bachelor of Divinity

The song of the congregation is a devotional form of musical art. The singing, to be sure, is not that of mechanical perfection; there is not to be found the delicate nuances of the artist; but when the entire congregation lifts its heart and voice in the praise and adoration of almighty God, the loving Father, there is a spiritual quality in the music that makes the hymns a magnificent setting for the preaching of God's word. The hymns build up to the climax of the sermon; they frame the sermon in beauty. The singing of hymns is an important …

A Comparison Of The Dramatic Technique Of "Antony And Cleopatra" With That Of "Macbeth," "Hamlet," And "King Lear.", Catherine Cunningham Apr 1934

A Comparison Of The Dramatic Technique Of "Antony And Cleopatra" With That Of "Macbeth," "Hamlet," And "King Lear.", Catherine Cunningham

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the purpose of this paper to discover the formula for a typical Shakespearean tragedy by an analysis of four of the later tragedies, "Hamlet," "Macbeth," "King Lear," and "Antony and Cleopatra." Knowing that Shakespeare employed various dramatic devices to secure his effects, I propose to find out in what way his dramatic technique in the play "Antony and Cleopatra" differs from that of the three preceding plays.

By examining the technical divisions of each Shakespearean tragedy and the use of the various dramatic elements which Shakespeare employed, I believe the outstanding differences in the dramatic technique will be …

Comparison Between Shakespeare's Richard Iii And The Historical Richard Iii, M. Annella Apr 1934

Comparison Between Shakespeare's Richard Iii And The Historical Richard Iii, M. Annella

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of the writer in working out this thesis is to discover in what respects Shakespeare has been untrue to historical facts and characters. In a work of this kind, it will be possible to point out only the chief discrepancies on the part of the dramatist, by a specific comparison of the play and its characters with the period of history with which the play deals and the life of the main characters concerned. A great portion of the work will be devoted to the careful analysis of the character of Richard III, the vortex about which the …

The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine Apr 1934

The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is intended as a study of the first French Republic during the years of 1792 and 1795.

The writer might call it the Revolution itself, so completely were the years of violence under the Convention the outcome of the attempt to preserve the advantages the Constituent Assembly had gained. To understand the conditions which were outgrown and the origin and growth of the revolutionary spirit, seems, therefore, quite as necessary as to trace the history of the destruction of abuse and the struggle for liberties and rights.

While novelties of historical matters are always to be suspected, the …

The World Economic Scene In Perspective, Harold Hutcheson Apr 1934

The World Economic Scene In Perspective, Harold Hutcheson

Honors Theses

The greatest problem facing the world today is that of attaining a proper distribution of productive power, both within nations as well as between them. It is one that has been with us for the past sixty or so years; and our inability to arrive at a proper solution to it bas already involved us in one momentous war, and threatens to do so again. Knowledge of past economy development reveals this; a close examination of our present economic impasse substantiates it.

The Supreme Court Of The Confederate States Of America, Robert W. Ferrell Apr 1934

The Supreme Court Of The Confederate States Of America, Robert W. Ferrell

Honors Theses

Much has been written about the military history of the Confederate States of America, but comparatively little has been recorded regarding the civil status of the form of government behind the armed forces. This fact might be explained in many ways, upon which however we will not endeavor to expatiate, our purpose being to investigate only one phase of the civil government which has received very little attention from historians, namely, the judicial system of the Confederate States culminating in its Supreme Court.

The Influence Of The Greek Drama Upon Eugene O'Neill's "Mourning Becomes Electra", Nancy Moore Jan 1934

The Influence Of The Greek Drama Upon Eugene O'Neill's "Mourning Becomes Electra", Nancy Moore

Graduate Thesis Collection

In his "Mounring Becomes Electra", Eugene O'Neill has taken a great and renowed classical theme and has given it a modern interpretation in the light of his interest in Freudian psychology. In this thesis I have tried to show first the chief details in connection with the Orestea theme as it is given to us by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. I have then analyzed the characters in the Greek dramas since Eugene O'Neill's primary interest in his character.
