A Comparison Of The Fables Of La Fontaine With The Fables Of Aesop, Mary Louise Dougherty Aug 1933

A Comparison Of The Fables Of La Fontaine With The Fables Of Aesop, Mary Louise Dougherty

Bachelors’ Theses

In this Thesis, La Fontaine and Aesop will be studied and compared by means of those works of theirs which are, perhaps, the best remembered: The Fables.

La Fontaine's and Aesop's Fables are well known for the moral inculcated in each. They have always in mind one purpose ... to teach the reader. La Fontaine used many of the Fables of Aesop as a background for his own Fables. Those of Aesop possessed no graces of style, and so La Fontaine added graces of style to those he wrote.

Moliere's Influence On Congreve, Mildred Atkins Stern Aug 1933

Moliere's Influence On Congreve, Mildred Atkins Stern

Masters Theses

Conclusion:

Congreve owes a debt to Moliere - a debt which varies with the different plays but which can be traced in all four comedies. Plots, characters, and dramatic style recall Moliere. Many of the similarities between Congreve and Moliere may be accidental and allowances must be made for these. But after all allowances are made, the great indebtedness of Congreve to Moliere is evident. We may conclude with Swinburne that "a limb of Moliere would have sufficed to make a Congreve" and yet that "no English writer, on the whole, has so nearly touched the skirts of Moliere."

The New Mexican Decima, Reginald C. Reindorp Jul 1933

The New Mexican Decima, Reginald C. Reindorp

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Introduction. In the study here presented an attempt has been made to gather as many decimas as possible in one source so that they will be easily accessible for future reference and study and to give a few pertinent remarks concerning them.

The material presented in appendix 1 does not represent all of the decimas known in New Mexico, but is probably sufficient in quantity to ensure a sample of all types. Last attempts to obtain additional material resulted in securing only duplicates of decimals already at hand. However there is doubtless other material to be had in remote sections. …

The Reign Of Terror Was A Natural Consequence Of Preceding Incidents, Octave Peter Smith Jun 1933

The Reign Of Terror Was A Natural Consequence Of Preceding Incidents, Octave Peter Smith

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

In developing this subject one must consider the exact meaning of Revolution. We must not construe this term to mean constant, systematic and gradual changes, which are continuously developing civilization. However, the term in its broadest sense might be so construed, but it is our purpose to study the mental conditions that has to do with minds in a state of "excited change"- "mental upheaval"- "abrupt development"- such as the Mexican Revolution, French Revolution, the Russian Revolution and the revolutions which may have all the mental aspects of a major revolution even though it may not succeed in its purpose.

The purpose of this study is to consider the position of woman in the works of the Brontes with particular attention to a comparison of the Bronte heroines with the usual heroines of Victorian fiction. Before approaching their books, however, it will be necessary to learn something of these three sisters whose lives contained so much that set them apart from the typical English novelist of the nineteenth century.

A History Of The Progressive Party In Kansas, George H. Callis Jun 1933

A History Of The Progressive Party In Kansas, George H. Callis

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This thesis has been written with the aim of making it a teaching instrument in the social sciences. An attempt has been made to cover the span of American History treating briefly the liberalizing forces. The author has used much of the text of the thesis in his classes in American History, Kansas History, World History, American Problems, Civics, Economics, and Sociology. The narrative of the development of the liberal forces in government adds much to the vividness of teaching because of its setting. It is recent enough in point of time to belong to the present era and helps …

The Historical Development Of Girard, Kansas, And Its Community, Willis Ernest Lamson Jun 1933

The Historical Development Of Girard, Kansas, And Its Community, Willis Ernest Lamson

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Kansas is rich in historic facts. Her traditions may be traced to the Spanish conquest of the native Indians of Mexico. In the sixteenth century Coronado came northward seeking for the mythical kingdom of Quivera, and claimed it by the right of conquest and discovery as a part of the kingdom of Spain. France nearly two centuries later sent out explorers who explored the Mississippi and Missouri rivers and declared at the mouth of each stream that all the land drained by these rivers and their tributaries belonged to the Kingdom of France. During the early part of the nineteenth …

The Dean Of Dime Novelists And The Merriwell Saga, Or, The Life And Career Of William Gilbert Patten, John Levi Cutler May 1933

The Dean Of Dime Novelists And The Merriwell Saga, Or, The Life And Career Of William Gilbert Patten, John Levi Cutler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

William Gilbert Patten is the last and greatest figure in the history of the dime novel. Representing, as he does, the transition of the dime novel writer to the field of the pulp paper magazines, he is the fitting climax to a period of prolific fictioneering unparalleled in the history of literature in any time or place. Of the school of fiction hacks who swamped the country with stories of wild adventure from the Civil War to the World War, not one stands on equal footing with the creator of Frank Merriwell. Judged by any standard he is easily the …

A Study Of "Konigliche Hoheit" -- Thomas Mann, Anne Marie Druml May 1933

A Study Of "Konigliche Hoheit" -- Thomas Mann, Anne Marie Druml

Bachelors’ Theses

The object of my thesis is to study Konigliche Hoheit and through it come to a knowledge of the personality and character of the writer. In the first chapter I have discussed his life and his works and the second, third and fourth chapters are devoted to a study of the "Konigliche Hoheit". My intention is first to give the content of the novel and then follow it up by a criticism of character - and in this the reader can obtain a clear notion of the attributes of Mann's writings as well as his understanding of human emotions. The …

The Saintly Father Benedict, Head And Protector Of All The Monks In The West (Excerpts From The Second Book Of The "Dialogues" Of Saint Gregory The Great.), Emerentiana Braml May 1933

The Saintly Father Benedict, Head And Protector Of All The Monks In The West (Excerpts From The Second Book Of The "Dialogues" Of Saint Gregory The Great.), Emerentiana Braml

Bachelors’ Theses

Benedict, "The Blessed One", by grace and name, was indeed a man of venerable life. From the very time of his boyhood he guarded his heart like an aged person. Though regulating his manner of living according to the custom of his state, his heart never gave way to passion. Even while still in the world, where he was able to temporal things freely, he already looked down upon this barren earth with tears.

Born of noble parentage in the district of Nursia, Benedict was brought to Rome for the study of letters. Noticing, while there, that many of his …

The Athletics Of The Ancient Greeks, William G. Blommer May 1933

The Athletics Of The Ancient Greeks, William G. Blommer

Bachelors’ Theses

In writing this thesis my object has been to obtain an intimate, view of the ancient Greek athlete. I have attempted to picture him as Homer depicted him in the Iliad and as he lived from the eighth to the fourth century B.C. I also tried to engender a real appreciation of the physical perfection that he attained by describing the events in which he actually competed.

An Historic Account Of Music Criticism And Music Critics In Utah, Basil Hansen May 1933

An Historic Account Of Music Criticism And Music Critics In Utah, Basil Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in making a study of music criticism in Utah is to realize a reliable historical account of criticism as expressed by means of journals and the growth of music within the state. This study, it is granted, is not a complete history of music in Utah. It merely treats one phase of a yet unwritten history.

A secondary interest is to defend the assertion that Utah has had music criticism and not to eulogize or deride the music pioneers of the state. It may also impress the need of constructive criticism to insure the stimulus and incentive necessary …

Mission San Juan Bautista California: The Causes And Effects Of Its Rise And Decline, John E. Martin Apr 1933

Mission San Juan Bautista California: The Causes And Effects Of Its Rise And Decline, John E. Martin

Philosophy Doctoral

The immutable law of Cause and Effect affords an interesting gauge for the study of one of California's renowned missions. To compile all of the available data concerning a particular mission, to examine its buildings and grounds minutely and then to seek the Why and the Wherefore, provides an instructive undertaking.

Mission San Juan Bautista, California, the largest of the mission edifices, is a splendid subject for such a study. Why was it built, what was the purpose of its strange closed-off side aisles, why did it decline, what were the results achieved in its history? These are questions which …

Catherine De Medici Her Influence On France, Catherine Mary Croke Apr 1933

Catherine De Medici Her Influence On France, Catherine Mary Croke

Bachelors’ Theses

In writing this thesis my aim will be to state the true facts as far as that lies within my ability. To accomplish this I will have to surmount obstacles of no small dimensions. In order to understand the difficulties which surround my efforts in this direction, we have only to recall how difficult it is to arrive at the knowledge of true and real facts in matters of everyday occurrences. To impress this later statement on our minds I make reference to the late United States Presidential election, it was by no means easy to become acquainted with the …

The Intellectual And Social Achievements During The Age Of Louis Xiv, William M. Bell Apr 1933

The Intellectual And Social Achievements During The Age Of Louis Xiv, William M. Bell

Bachelors’ Theses

History is primarily a cultural study of events, characters and movements that have taken place during the ages. The purpose of this study, however, is not to memorize dates of particular events or characters but to view it with a study from a philosophical view point. Various ages are outstanding in European history in which man has been politically, socially, and intellectually benefited, therefore we make special mention of the Seventeenth Century in which the Age of Louis XlV is characteristic. Due to the policies of Devine Right advocated by Mazarin and Richelieu, Louis XlV was able to rule as …

An Historical Criticism Of Winston Churchill's The Crisis, Richard O. Bellinghausen Apr 1933

An Historical Criticism Of Winston Churchill's The Crisis, Richard O. Bellinghausen

Bachelors’ Theses

To begin with, before setting out upon a particular scholarly duty, it is well to clarify, in as concrete a manner as is possible, the problem confronting one, and the objective which is to be the desired end of the research. Applying this principle to the present work the problem to be solved is that of the historical accuracy of a representative work by Winston Churchill, dealing with the Civil War in the United States, having in mind specifically the historical references and allusions made concerning conditions in Missouri, which was a typical border state of the wartime era.

In …

The History And Method Of The Immanuel Movement And Of Associated Groups, George W. Kehl Jan 1933

The History And Method Of The Immanuel Movement And Of Associated Groups, George W. Kehl

Graduate Thesis Collection

My interest in the subject of this thesis dates back ten years to the time when as a College and Theological Seminary Graduate I began to make my first visits to the sick in the congregation of which I had become pastor. Questions began to present themselves because the average sick calling seemed so perfunctory. Was I calling just to bring greetings from the church and to show my own interest? If I had prayer with the person who was sick, what answer should I expect to my prayer? Would or should there be immediate improvement and if not, why …

The Ethics Of Jesus And The Plight Of The Coal Miners, James Croswell Perkins Jan 1933

The Ethics Of Jesus And The Plight Of The Coal Miners, James Croswell Perkins

Honors Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the ethics of Jesus and to describe conditions which have resulted from a failure to apply his teachings to an important phase of economic life. No attempt will be made to offer a panacea.

Some of the limitations of this study should be noted. Attention will be confined to the bituminous coal industry. As the main interest in this thesis is ethical, it has been necessary to neglect many economic aspects of the problem. We are fully aware of the existence and importance of such questions, but they seem beyond the scope …

The Treatment Of The Tristan Legend In English Literature Up To The Twentieth Century, Myrtle M. Johnson Jan 1933

The Treatment Of The Tristan Legend In English Literature Up To The Twentieth Century, Myrtle M. Johnson

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose of the following study has been to consider the consecutive interpretations of the Tristan legend in English literature down to the present century. In order to appreciate their comparative fidelity to the spirit of the lost primitive poem, it was first necessary to examine the metrical romance of Thomas, "who may be said," writes William Henry Schofield, "to represent the highest achievement of any English poet in the twelfth century," along with other derivatives used in the scholarly and poetic reconstruction, made by Joseph Bedier, of that hypothetical original creation.
