Religion And Ptsd In Puerto Rico Natural Disaster Survivors, Abraham Reynolds
Religion And Ptsd In Puerto Rico Natural Disaster Survivors, Abraham Reynolds
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Religious coping can influence recovery from natural disaster trauma. Participants were recruited from a religiously sponsored university in Puerto Rico, affected by several natural disasters between 2017 and 2020, using an online survey. A significant relationship was found between negative religious coping and changes in mood and cognition, mediated by the effect of worthiness of self. Results indicate that negative religious coping may adversely influence an individual’s view of self and increase PTSD-related changes in mood and cognition. If clinicians only examine a client’s view of self, they may miss the influence of negative religious coping.
Decolonizing Psychotherapy, Nicole D. Taylor
Decolonizing Psychotherapy, Nicole D. Taylor
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This project aims to increase the use and inclusivity of mental health services within marginalized communities by providing education and training tools on the use and application of integrative mental health approaches. It is an offering of guidance, providing a culturally responsive framework for integrating yoga into psychotherapy. The manual aims to reduce systemic, colonialist, barriers to mental health services. This project is founded on the basis that mono-cultural foundations in traditional psychotherapeutic treatments negatively impact the attitudes and beliefs of service seekers, typically within excluded groups. Systems Theory and Critical Race Theory and Social Justice principles inform the application …
Using Nominal Group Technique Among Resident Physicians To Identify Key Attributes Of A Burnout Prevention Program, Vicki Nelson
Using Nominal Group Technique Among Resident Physicians To Identify Key Attributes Of A Burnout Prevention Program, Vicki Nelson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Physician burnout is a work-related syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a sense of reduced personal accomplishment. It is present in epidemic proportions and is estimated to occur in over 50% of practicing physicians and in up to 89% of resident physicians. While there have been numerous burnout studies and many prevention or intervention programs introduced, the rates of utilization in resident physicians remain low and the rate of burnout continues to increase. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to generate an understanding of burnout prevention attribute preferences within a resident physician population using Nominal Group Technique (NGT). …

The Efficacy Of Melodic Based Communication Therapy For Eliciting Speech In Nonverbal Children With Autism, Givona A. Sandiford
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this dissertation is to compare the efficacy of Melodic Based Communication Therapy (MBCT) to traditional speech and language therapy for eliciting speech in nonverbal children with autism. Efficacy was assessed by number of: verbalizations, correct words, words reported by parent, and imitative attempts. Additionally it examines the effect of exposure to MBCT on social language abilities as measured by score on the Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory (PLSI); the effect of age on the response to treatment, and the predictors of overall effectiveness of treatment.
Participants were 12 nonverbal children with autism ages 5 through 7 randomly assigned …

The Efficacy Of An Audio Program And Discussion Guide In Promoting Exclusive Breastfeeding In Cameroon, Africa, Kathryn R. Reinsma
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background: In the Northwest Region of Cameroon, approximately 90% of women initiate breastfeeding; however, only 34% continue exclusive breastfeeding for the recommended six months (Kakute, et al., 2005; WHO, 2008). Entertainment-education is a mass-media communication strategy of placing educational information into media such as television programs, movies, and radio programs (Siegel & Lotenberg, 2007). This form of behavioral change communication has proven effective in addressing health-related issues in developing countries.
Purpose: The aim was to design an audio program and discussion guide to test the hypothesis that an audio program and discussion guide improves exclusive breastfeeding knowledge, beliefs, benefits, self-efficacy, …
Perceived Parent-Child Relationship And High-Risk Behaviors Among Christian College Students, Karla G. Lavin Williams
Perceived Parent-Child Relationship And High-Risk Behaviors Among Christian College Students, Karla G. Lavin Williams
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background. Adolescents and young adults today are participating in high-risk behaviors such as dangerous sexual behaviors and drug and alcohol abuse at high rates. An increased incidence of negative effects associated with the aforementioned behaviors has led researchers to examine factors that influence and protect adolescents from certain devastating effects (Davis, Hendershot, George, Norris, & Heiman, 2007; Goldstein, Bamett, Pedlow, & Murphy, 2007; Hamilton, et al., 2007; Hingson, Heeren, & Winter, 2006; Hingson, Heeren, Winter, & Wechsler, 2003; Hingson, Heeren, Zakocs, Winter, & Wechsler, 2003; McCarty, et al., 2004; Mokdad, Marks, Stroup, & Gerberding, 2004; Mosher, Chandra, & Jones, 2005; …
A Study Of The Relationship Between American Evangelicals And Human Rights, Amy Rachel Timmons Stumpf
A Study Of The Relationship Between American Evangelicals And Human Rights, Amy Rachel Timmons Stumpf
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Human rights violations and abuses affect every region of the globe. The most recent Amnesty International Annual Report details violations in 149 countries. While there are no simple solutions to a problem of this magnitude and complexity, the support of powerful social groups can help in providing relief to the victims, pressure on abusive governments, legal consequences for abusers, and other resources in combating the violence that seems to chronically plague over our world. One of the most powerful groups, with tremendous social capital, is American evangelicals. Evangelicalism, even given the loose and informal organizational structures, is one of the …
The Reliability And Validity Of A Manual Coding System For Identifying Emotion, Erin O'Carroll Bantum
The Reliability And Validity Of A Manual Coding System For Identifying Emotion, Erin O'Carroll Bantum
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Emotion focused coping and emotional expression have been identified as potential mediators of long-term adjustment to a cancer diagnosis. Tools for measuring emotional expression in text have not been well-validated, although there is an abundance of textual data that is available to help explore emotional expression and the relationship between emotional expression and outcome measures. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a manual coding system of emotional expression that could be compared with current programs that have been used to evaluate emotional expression. Inter-rater reliability was found to be good with the use of the manually coded system …
The Healing Ministry Of Jesus As Recorded In The Synoptic Gospels, Alvin Lloyd Maragh
The Healing Ministry Of Jesus As Recorded In The Synoptic Gospels, Alvin Lloyd Maragh
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study explores the narratives in the healing ministry of Jesus as recorded in the synoptic gospels. The majority of the healing narratives address issues that transcend physical aspects and point to Jesus' attempt to restore the whole person. This is reflected in the fact that more than half of the healing narratives deal with the marginalized of society during Jesus' time. He healed demon possessed persons, beggars, lepers, women suffering from incurable diseases, and those who were racially discriminated against by the Jews. Other healing narratives deal with the understanding of faith, the message of forgiveness, and the meaning …
Breaking The Stereotypes: Exploring Traits Of Female Athletes, Carrie Magan Warda
Breaking The Stereotypes: Exploring Traits Of Female Athletes, Carrie Magan Warda
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Despite the growing acceptance of women's sports and the increasing number of women and girls who are participating in sports, a number of negative stereotypes still exist concerning female athletes. Because the competitive, masculine nature of sports has been viewed as the antithesis of femininity, women who have actively participated in sports have often been stigmatized as "masculine" (Anthrop & Allison, 1983; Snyder & Kivlin, 1977). Past research has determined that female athletes do tend to possess more masculine personality traits than their non-athletic counterparts (Andre & Holland, 1995; Houseworth, Peplow, & Thirer, 1989; Marsh & Jackson, 1986; Myers & …

The recorded interviews were done at the office of the mentioned …
Grace And Truth: A Divorce Theology For Missionary Organizations, Pennie Lynn Kemp
Grace And Truth: A Divorce Theology For Missionary Organizations, Pennie Lynn Kemp
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Throughout church history, divorce has been a very sensitive subject, and with the divorce rate of the general population at almost fifty-percent, some controversy is inevitable. The issue becomes even more complex as more Christians, including church leaders and pastors, experience divorce. In light of this increase in the incidence of divorce, missionary organizations will inevitably encounter more divorced men and women who apply for service. The challenge for these agencies is to encompass a biblically based divorce theology that recognizes the seriousness of divorce on one hand while not appearing to submit to cultural influence on the other. This …
Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler
Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The near-death phenomenon has initiated a new debate over Jesus' and Paul's claim in the New Testament that the gospel message therein outlines the only way to salvation. Despite twenty-five years of writing and research by near-death (NDE) advocates the dispute continues not only over the disparity between the gospel and NOE but over the origin and meaning of the near-death experience itself. Initially it was medical and pharmacological questions that focused the discussions. More advanced theories are being offered suggesting that the right temporal lobe of the brain acts as a "circuit board" or gateway for a range of …
Covenantal Ethics: A Living System For Living Systems, Matthew D. Viel
Covenantal Ethics: A Living System For Living Systems, Matthew D. Viel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Covenantal ethics is a living system for living systems. We humans are not simple, isolated individuals living stagnant, dead lives. Rather we are immersed in a complex system of living, glowing and developing interpersonal relationships with others. Philosophy in general and ethics in particular are often looked upon as dead or dormant entities. Covenantal ethics is neither. It is a living approach to the philosophy of ethics that recognizes the dynamic system in which we live. Our world recently welcomed a new millennium. We moved forward, leaving behind much of the old and eagerly anticipating what was to come. One …

Spanish-Speaking Parents’ Attitudes Toward Explanations Of Anesthetic Techniques, Melba Zuniga Mayes
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
PURPOSE Little attention has been given to the issue of obtaining informed consent for conscious sedation and general anesthesia from Spanish-speaking parents living in the United States. The treatment of pediatric dental patients can only be as effective as the extent to which Spanish-speaking parents consent to the dental treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify valuable information that dentists can utilize to obtain an informed consent for conscious sedation and general anesthesia from Spanish-speaking parents.
METHOD Each Spanish-speaking parent in the sample was given one of the following explanations regarding an anesthetic technique: 1) verbal presentation for …
Adolescence And Spiritual Gifts, Joel Campos Muñoz
Adolescence And Spiritual Gifts, Joel Campos Muñoz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This theory study shows the possible relations between adolescence and spiritual gifts. The study begins with the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and adolescence. The results of this study attempts to link the life stage of adolescence with adulthood. The work attempts to suggest that the Holy Spirit works in the same way in the adolescence as He works in adult life. As a stage of life, adolescence may be a possible time for conversion and the possible time to receive spiritual gifts. The gifts may be the practical means of finding and executing God's will for their …
"We Are The Remnant": A Historical, Biblical, And Theological Analysis Of Seventh-Day Adventist Ecclesiological Self-Understanding, Stephan Paul Mitchell
"We Are The Remnant": A Historical, Biblical, And Theological Analysis Of Seventh-Day Adventist Ecclesiological Self-Understanding, Stephan Paul Mitchell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis addresses the problem of Seventh-day Adventism's claim to comprise the final "remnant" church of Bible prophecy. The traditional emphasis within the church has been to lay exclusive claims upon the "remnant" of Revelation 12:17, God's last true church, on the basis that (a) Adventism exists in the "last days," (b) keeping the commandments of God" refers to their unique emphasis on the seventh-day Sabbath, (c) "having the testimony of Jesus" describes their possession of the gift of prophecy manifest in the life and work of Ellen G. White, and (d) God has given this church the task of …
Divine Judgment In The Book Of Revelation, James E. Shipp
Divine Judgment In The Book Of Revelation, James E. Shipp
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Judgment themes in the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament are described and classified. Special attention is given to recurring themes of remedial judgment and annihilation. John's Revelation is analyzed for consistency of judgment themes, and John's theology of judgment is compared and contrasted with other scriptural sources. It is concluded that John described God as the. active judge in human history. John's theology of judgment includes remedial judgment where physical or natural calamities are intended to lead people to repentance, and final judgment where lost souls are annihilated. John's Revelation is seen to be devoid of forensic or courtroom …
Worship : Hope For The Waiting Community, Ivan T. Loo
Worship : Hope For The Waiting Community, Ivan T. Loo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The relationship between hope and worship has been neglected for too long in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Adventism in North America has lost much of its zeal for and emphasis on the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. A renewed awareness of corporate worship's importance would help Adventists more fully understand their unique role in Christiandom. Adventists need to gain a better grasp of the meaning of Christian hope. Worship services should be a time and place for experiencing, enhancing, and transmitting the believers' hope. Congregations that take part in liturgies incorporating the "Great Controversy" theme will be better equipped to …
Apostasy -- A Biblical, Theological, And Pastoral Approach, Octavian Cureteu
Apostasy -- A Biblical, Theological, And Pastoral Approach, Octavian Cureteu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis concerns apostasy, which responds to a major religious crisis in the life of a believer by a deliberate alienation and abandonment of faith. This crisis involves a conflict on an intellectual, social, or emotional dimension. The problem of the thesis may be stated as follows: How can an understanding of the dynamics of apostasy benefit gospel workers? To this question the thesis answers in three different ways: Biblical, theological, and practical. Chapter Two, the Biblical approach, is a rather detailed survey of two typical cases which serve to define apostasy as a sinful process. The first example, belonging …

Case-Control Study Of Vitamin A Intake And Colorectal Cancer In Seventh-Day Adventists, John William Morgan
Case-Control Study Of Vitamin A Intake And Colorectal Cancer In Seventh-Day Adventists, John William Morgan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in Americans; producing approximately 60,000 deaths in Americans each year. Studies of high and low risk populations have suggested a dietary etiology for colorectal cancer, although investigations of specific dietary factors have produced inconsistent results.
Population based studies of California Seventh-day Adventists demonstrate dietary variety regarding factors suspected as important in the etiology of colorectal cancer. These studies document a substantially reduced mortality and incidence from colorectal cancer in Seventh-day Adventists when compared to other California Populations. Although specific reasons for this difference remain obscure, the 'Unique lifestyle and …
The Evolution Of The Literary Fish, Sharon R. Wachter
The Evolution Of The Literary Fish, Sharon R. Wachter
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Fish symbolism, which is mythologically linked with fertility gods in many instances, changes with man's changing concept of himself and his relationship to the universe. Christians, who perceive their God as asexual, have divided fish symbolism into two mutually exclusive categories: religious symbolism, which deals solely with things divine, and secular symbolism, which deals solely with things sexual. This division survives until well into the twentieth century. An examination of various poets from the last hundred years shows a trend to focus on images traditionally associated with God in order to show divine and religious failure in dealing with the …
The Theology Of Jurgen Moltmann, Brent A. Wood
The Theology Of Jurgen Moltmann, Brent A. Wood
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this thesis is to describe and respond to some of the major themes in the dialectical writings of Jurgen Moltmann.
The first chapter of the thesis examines Moltmann's theological and philosophical heritage. Two key individuals are discussed, Jacob Boehme and Friedrich Schelling. These men are significant for their contribution to Moltmann's basic view of reality and life. Described briefly, all of life is caught up in struggle. At the very foundation of all that is, including God, are two opposing forces, namely being and nonbeing.
It is the contention of this thesis that this orientation has greatly …
Shakespeare's Henry V And The Alexandrian Allusion, Winona Howe
Shakespeare's Henry V And The Alexandrian Allusion, Winona Howe
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The character of Henry V (in Shakespeare's play of the same name) has been a matter of debate among critics, some of whom accept the historical view of Henry as an extraordinarily able and heroic king, while others view him as an extremely unattractive personality, a spiritual hypocrite, and a conqueror of unmitigated cruelty. Cited as supporting evidence for this unflattering portrait is a passage in Act IV which consists of a conversation between two characters, Gower and Fluellen. In this conversation, Henry is compared to Alexander the Great or "the Pig" as Fluellen terms him.
Two critics, Ronald Berman …
The Castillo De San Fernando De Omoa : The History Of A Fiasco, James L. Zackrison
The Castillo De San Fernando De Omoa : The History Of A Fiasco, James L. Zackrison
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The concept behind the fort of San Fernando de Omoa grew from the unrest caused by pirates along the coasts of Central America in the 17th and 18th centuries. The poor condition of the Caribbean defenses resulted partly because Spain did not know how to deal with the pirates. The latter did not have very much strength, and changed tactics as often as the Spaniards did. Several military strategists, including the Count of Aranda, Juan Bautista Antonelli, and apparently, Luis D!ez Navarro, recommended forts--in the case of this study, San Fernando de Omoa--to serve as bases and safe ports from …
John Mcleod Campbell And Thomas Erskine: Scottish Exponents Of Righteousness, Faith, And The Atonement, David P. Duffie
John Mcleod Campbell And Thomas Erskine: Scottish Exponents Of Righteousness, Faith, And The Atonement, David P. Duffie
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis focuses upon the reaffirmation and clarification by two independent 19th-century theologians of certain New Testament and Reformation emphases which had become largely obscured amid the rigidities of later Calvinism. These emphases, when employed by Campbell and Erskine in their largely lay ministries, resulted in grassroots revival on the one hand, and ecclesiastic opposition on the other.
The early chapters examine the elements in Campbell's preaching which were considered heretical and which resulted in his trial and deposition from the Church of Scotland. He was faulted for preaching "universal pardon" and "assurance of faith." What he really meant by …
The Removal Of The Winnebago Indians From Wisconsin In 1873-74, Lawrence W. Onsager
The Removal Of The Winnebago Indians From Wisconsin In 1873-74, Lawrence W. Onsager
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Winnebago are a Siouan-speaking tribe which historically occupied eastern and southern Wisconsin. This thesis uses their culture and history as a background for telling the story of the removal of the Wisconsin remnant in 1873-74. This non-treaty-abiding faction of the tribe was forcibly taken to Nebraska where the treaty-abiding faction had a reservation.
The Wisconsin Winnebago had four reasons for resisting removal. 1) Based on their experience with prior removals, they knew that many of their children and elderly would die. 2) They feared attack by the western Sioux. 3) As woodland Indians, the Winnebago considered Wisconsin to be …
A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell
A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Tracing the initiation motif in Katharine Anne Porter's "Miranda stories" uncovers her maturing protagonist's search for order and personal truth. Miranda's inward journey ultimately leads not to nihilism and despair, as some critics suggest, but to an honest and courageous affirmation of the independent spirit.
Porter's fiction involving Miranda and her family background reveal varying stages of this maturing that, together with parallel theories of initiation, fall into critic Mordecai Marcus' paradigm of initiation types. The "tentative" initiation stories only brush the child Miranda's awareness and deal primarily with the external world. They include "The Circus," marking an "emotional" initiation …
The Legacy Of The Three Presidencies Of Arnulfo Arias Madrid, Sandra Blackman
The Legacy Of The Three Presidencies Of Arnulfo Arias Madrid, Sandra Blackman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Arnulfo Arias Madrid colored the history of Panama with his eccentric, jingoistic, and often humorous escapades. His presidencies were brief, but provided a lasting influence on the country's political system.
Arias formed the first really cohesive political party, made up largely of the Panamanian middle class. The party has survived more than four decades, unlike any other political party in that country. It has, however, changed its name with the times. Arias ostensibly based his party on long-term national goals, but once in off ice sought to advance his personal interests and to centralize power. In so doing he deprived. …
