Interview With Dr. Gary Yia Lee, Paul Hillmer
Interview With Dr. Gary Yia Lee, Paul Hillmer
Hmong Oral History Project
Dr. Gary Yia Lee, distinguished anthropologist and scholar, traveled from his home in Sydney, Australia to California for a funeral, then made a stop to visit family in the Twin Cities. Tou Thao, his nephew, is an alumnus of Concordia University and a founder of the Hmong Oral History Project. He prevailed on his kind uncle, despite jet lag, the exhausting effects of a three-day funeral, and many, many demands on his time (including a presentation at Concordia University on 29 December), to sit down with me. I owe many thanks-and apologies-to Dr. Lee, his wife Maylee Lee, and the …

The Passing Of Abc's Monday Night Football, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
At the end of its thirty-sixth season, ABC's Monday Night Football will pass into history, sort of. It certainly has been an institution of historical significance for broadcasting and for American popular culture as well as sport. It will not exactly disappear but will migrate to Sunday night, while ESPN's Sunday night football will move over to fill the void on Monday night.

Far Reaches Of The Holiday Bowl Lineup, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Several years ago the good people at the Miller Brewing Company put together the Miller Lite Survey of Sport in America. The survey, greeted by many with a roar of disbelief, found that bowling was the most popular participatory sport in the nation. We are now about to enter the Bowling Zone, a sixteen-day run of college football games with little or no meaning except to close family and friends of the participants, with a few notable exceptions. This is not the kind of bowling that was found in the Miller Lite Survey. These are not events featuring a hard …

Forgiveness For Lou Holtz And George O'Leary, Richard C. Crepeau
Forgiveness For Lou Holtz And George O'Leary, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Forgiveness is a wonderful thing. Many saintly people through the years have espoused its practice. In sport, if you know where to look, you will find that forgiveness is extensively practiced. It can also pay dividends and in the calculus of the modern world that is all that really counts.

Demographics And Motivation Of Adult Group Piano Students, Brenda Wristen
Demographics And Motivation Of Adult Group Piano Students, Brenda Wristen
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
Adults are continuing to pursue a greater quantity and variety of educational opportunities. As evidenced by this study, adults typically have compelling goals from the outset of piano study and maintain clear expectations regarding in¬struction. They found the group environment helpful, underscoring findings from aforementioned studies regarding the success of choir, band, and other group musical activities for adults. More research concerning the social motivation of group music participation is warranted. Further investigation into what factors motivate adults to seek out and continue to pursue music study would help teachers better address the needs and concerns of adult learners. Likewise, …
