How U.S. Government Policy Documents Are Addressing The Increasing National Security Implications Of Artificial Intelligence, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Artificial intelligence is affecting many areas of our lives and governmental policy. National security is one arena in which artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important and controversial role. U.S. Government and military agencies are producing a steadily expanding corpus of publicly available literature on this topic. This literature documents how these agencies have this topic's national security implications historically and currently while also addressing potentially emerging national security issues where artificial intelligence will intersect with national security. This presentation demonstrates examples of the growing variety of publicly available national security artificial intelligence literature while also addressing the implications of …

All Musselman Library Staff Works
To expand the inclusivity and diversity of the library’s environment, Musselman Library offers a variety of training and educational opportunities for staff and student employees. Using a variety of formats and partnerships with other departments, these efforts have led to intentional changes in library space, services and equipment available, and hiring practices. Practical examples include highlighting events on campus, hosting short film and reading discussions, and utilizing campus speakers.

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
The ever-changing education and information landscape has brought with it an increased focus on teaching pedagogy and curriculum design. In response, Latin American Studies faculty are pursuing creative pedagogical directions and approaches in areas such as digital scholarship and information literacy in partnership with librarians and archivists. This roundtable will explore faculty-librarians practice-based initiatives focusing on issues related to the Global North and South. The uniqueness of this roundtable is that both the teaching faculty and the librarian representing each academic institution will be present. The University at Albany will discuss the redesign of a Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. …

Flexi Discs: The Audio Format That Time Forgot And Remembered Again, Junior R. Tidal
Flexi Discs: The Audio Format That Time Forgot And Remembered Again, Junior R. Tidal
Publications and Research
Flexi discs, also known as phonosheets and Soundsheets, are “flexible” plastic sheets that can be played on turntables. This audio format was used for a wide variety of purposes including promotional materials, giveaways, and inserts into magazines, stemming from their origins in playable chocolate discs in the early 1900s (Parks, 2018). At one point in time it was a $9 million dollar business, with the U.S. government as one of the top users of the technology (Penchansky, 1979). Their disposable nature, weight, ability to print directly on material, and affordable manufacturing made the flexi disc an alternative to vinyl pressings. …
Morals And Martial Arts: A Woman's Place Of Empowerment Through Judo, Sydney Wall
Morals And Martial Arts: A Woman's Place Of Empowerment Through Judo, Sydney Wall
Senior Honors Projects
This study explores the experiences of women within the world of judo, a combat sport derived from ancient samurai hand-to-hand combat techniques. Although judo was founded as a sport in the 1880s, there was no women’s section until 1923 and, even then, women were barred from competition out of concern for its impact on their ability to have children. It would not be until 1992 that women’s judo became a part of the Olympic program. These limitations on women’s participation have simultaneously resulted from and contributed to the association of judo with notions of masculinity. Despite almost thirty years of …

Centaur Screenwriting With 345m Gpt-2: The Problems And Possibilities Of Ai-Generated Creative Content For The Screen, Olivia Kane
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
In a world of technological advances, the line between human and artificially generated content is becoming increasingly blurred. AI generated visual art proves more pleasing to the eye, and music composed by computers is nearly indistinguishable from that of a human musician. The written word, however, seems to be one of the last great frontiers that artificial intelligence has yet to perfect. Our innate human ability to recognize anomalies in language prevents current platforms like GTP-2 from being effective in generating creative content on its own. Human interference and editing, however, may be able to create a new brand of …

Can Artificial Intelligence Be Creative?, Alexander Beatty
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
In a recently published essay, Sean Dorrance Kelly, a Philosophy professor at Harvard University, proposes his arguments for why he does not believe artificial intelligence has the capacity for true creativity. As one may expect from an individual of his profession, Kelly makes a compelling case for his claim; however, at its core, the piece is routed in the individual's natural biases and limited knowledge of the tech. As his piece is of the highest caliber of literature on the subject, it beautifully summarizes the most compelling arguments against artificial creativity. In this project, I will break down the key …

Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu
Textbook Affordability Is A Social Justice Issue: How Open Textbooks Are Paving The Way To Equality In Higher Education, Sarah Appedu
All Musselman Library Staff Works
Textbook affordability is becoming a bigger and bigger problem for students. Access to textbooks is essential for students to be able to meet their learning needs and have equal opportunity to excel as their peers. Open Textbooks are one response to this issue, but while most library outreach is focused on faculty members, students are an underutilized voice in the open education conversation. This presentation aims to educate students on what open textbooks are, what their limitations are, and how all students can participate in advocating for more affordable course materials.
Learning The Interdisciplinary Aspects Of Stage Management, Brandon Lovejoy
Learning The Interdisciplinary Aspects Of Stage Management, Brandon Lovejoy
Senior Honors Projects
TEDxURI is an independently organized event of TED Talks, a series of 5-20 minute long speeches about any topic surrounding a central theme. In 2019, the University of Rhode Island presented its second annual TEDx event, focused around the theme “Change It Up.” I was asked to perform the role of stage manager and coordinator for the event.
Stage management at the University level is taught for the theatrical stage. Often, students learn the basics of tracking actor movement, creating and organizing schedules, establishing a record of all paperwork, and throughout the process, displaying strong communication skills on a collaborative …
