La Favola D’Orfeo And The Role Of The Operatic Orchestra, Sarah Anderson, Grant Estes, Peyton Hansen
La Favola D’Orfeo And The Role Of The Operatic Orchestra, Sarah Anderson, Grant Estes, Peyton Hansen
2019 Festscrift: Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo
One of Claudio Monteverdi’s greatest contributions to the opera was his unification of musical ideas and theoretical philosophies passed down from his predecessors. These ideas were mostly concerned with the way in which a composer could manage instruments and voices in a dramatically satisfying way. Monteverdi’s La Favola d’Orfeo was the first opera to employ new musical philosophies that would come to characterize the genre. In this essay, we will outline operatic orchestration practices before Monteverdi and connect them to the La Favola d’Orfeo to demonstrate the profound shift that Monteverdi brought to the development of modern opera.

Symbolism In The Allegory: A Look At Apollo’S Lyre, Keri Meinert, Emily Keiner, Anne Bak
2019 Festscrift: Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo
This paper analyzes the symbolic meaning within Monteverdi’s operatic version of the fable of Orpheus, a demigod who has a talent for music. When Orpheus’ bride Eurydice died suddenly from a snake bite, he decides to seek her soul in the Underworld and bring her back to the land of the living. This task does not prove to be as easy for Orpheus as he initially thinks, when he finds himself losing her twice during the course of the five acts. To show how his journey unfolds, and the meaning behind each step, we will develop the symbolic meaning in …

Understanding The Cultural And Nationalistic Impacts Of The Moguchaya Kuchka, Austin M. Doub
Understanding The Cultural And Nationalistic Impacts Of The Moguchaya Kuchka, Austin M. Doub
B.A. in Music Senior Capstone Projects
This paper explores Russian culture beginning in the midnineteenth century as the leading group of composers and musicians known as the moguchaya kuchka, or The Mighty Five, sought to influence Russian culture and develop a "pure" school of Russian music amid rampant westernization. Comprised of César Cui, Alexander Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, this group of inspired musicians opposed westernization and supported Official Nationalism by the incorporation of folklore, local village traditions, and promotion of their Tsar as a supreme political leader. In particular, the works of Balakirev, Cui, and Mussorgsky established cultural pride and contributed to …

Praising God Around The World: Christian Worship Music As An Individual And Collective Experience, Divya Putty
Praising God Around The World: Christian Worship Music As An Individual And Collective Experience, Divya Putty
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The artists “Bethel” and “Hillsong” are frequently recognized by Christians living in America. But what about the names “Bridge Music India” or “Sinach”? These names would be most likely unknown in the states but celebrated in India and Nigeria. While each stems from vastly different cultural backgrounds, they all serve the purpose of creating a space for people to connect with God and each other through musical worship. Drawing on four different pieces of worship music and their use in live services, this article analyzes the effects of worship music, specifically their lyrical and musical content, on the individuals participating …

"In The Sentimental Past": Cultural Identity Through Film Music Before And After The Hong Kong Handover, Kasady Liu
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Hong Kong: a city characterized by Jackie Chan, kung fu, and its surprising “in-betweenness.” Not quite Eastern and not quite Western, Hong Kong has been placed in a unique position due to its recent handover from Great Britain to China. As a result of this handover, the people of Hong Kong have displayed various attitudes towards their previous, foreign system of democratic government and their new, Communist system of government. Hong Kong’s cultural identity is closely tied with the handover, and in this paper, I analyze how the film music of Hong Kong movies have conveyed ideas about their cultural …
