It Works For Me, Online!: Shared Tips For Online And Web-Enhanced Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, Douglas Robertson
Hal Blythe
It Works For Me, Online is designed primarily to aid instructors in two major types of classes: fully online and web-enhanced/hybrid courses. Those who teach fully online classes will find tips on such things as tricks you can use with synchronous chats, how to use blogging in your classroom to replace traditional chat-rooms (talk about your superannuation), and even ways of adapting Blackboard to meet administrative needs. Those who prefer web enhancements to the traditional classroom will find advice to navigate between the virtual and real world. And, truthfully, we are hopeful that even dyed-in-the-wool, card-carrying Luddites will skim through …
Total Team Teaching — Sharing Teaching Duties Equally, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Total Team Teaching — Sharing Teaching Duties Equally, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Hal Blythe
In his excellent book on team teaching (Interdisciplinary Courses and Team Teaching), James Davis posits two extremes on the continuum of team teaching. One pole consists of “courses planned by a group of faculty and then carried out in serial segments by the individual members of the group” (p. 7). At the opposite pole are “courses planned and delivered by a group … . They take primary responsibility for individual class sessions, but sometimes [italics ours] two or more faculty are involved in planning and delivering the instruction of a particular class.” (p. 7) The two of us take the …

Link resolvers, including Ex Libris’ SFX, use OpenURL to provide library patrons with context-sensitive links, such as the ability to move quickly from a citation in an abstracting and indexing database to the full text. In SFX, information for determining the appropriate links is maintained in the knowledge base, which contains details about a library’s electronic holdings and other information about electronic information resources. This article describes SFX functionality, what the service looks like from a patron’s point of view, and how it can be of particular assistance to a serials librarian.

Who Survived The Titanic? A Logistic Regression Analysis, Lonnie K. Stevans, David Gleicher
Who Survived The Titanic? A Logistic Regression Analysis, Lonnie K. Stevans, David Gleicher
Lonnie K. Stevans
A logistic regression analysis of an extensive data set on the Titanic passengers is presented which tests the likelihood that a Titanic passenger survived the accident--based upon passenger characteristics. The main finding is that underneath the strong overt preference afforded in the rescue by the authorities to women and children over men, there was a complex class determination of survival rates among men, on the one hand, and women and children, on the other. We hypothesize that the statistical interactions of gender and class are explained by two crucial decisions made by the ship’s authorities: 1. to encourage, and perhaps …
Natural Rights And Individual Sovereignty, Siegfried Van Duffel
Natural Rights And Individual Sovereignty, Siegfried Van Duffel
Siegfried Van Duffel
Can we have a moral right to do things that are immoral? Some people have said "Yes", but others have vehemently denied the same. This paper argues how such an idea could have developed out of a completely different one.
Libertarian Natural Rights, Siegfried Van Duffel
Libertarian Natural Rights, Siegfried Van Duffel
Siegfried Van Duffel
Libertarianism relies on a natural rights theory, which takes the idea of individual sovereignty as basic. The theory is flawed because it cannot ground an obligation for different sovereigns to respect each other's sovereignty.
Utopia In The Midst Of Oppression? A Reconsideration Of Guaraní/Jesuit Communities In Seventeenth And Eighteenth Century Paraguay, Thomas W. O'Brien
Utopia In The Midst Of Oppression? A Reconsideration Of Guaraní/Jesuit Communities In Seventeenth And Eighteenth Century Paraguay, Thomas W. O'Brien
Thomas W O'Brien
This essay is an examination of the 17th–18th century Guaraní/Jesuit communities in Paraguay, which were exalted as utopias by countless witnesses. These authors have stressed the long periods of peaceful coexistence, the rich and fruitful syncretistic melding cultures, the successful and bountiful economic life, and the relative justice. Nevertheless, controversy has always marked these communities because many believe that the Jesuit/Guaraní missions are best understood as integral to the larger oppressive imposition of European polity and culture. These authors stress evidence of condescending paternalism, structural inequality, restricted freedom of choice, and the erosion of a pristine Guaraní culture. This essay …

A Place Of Mercy: Finding God On The Street, Thomas O'Brien
Thomas W O'Brien
A Place of Mercy: Finding God on the Street What is it? • A series of roughly chronological snapshots reflecting theologically on experiences at the House of Mercy in Rochester, NY. The House of Mercy itself is an outreach to the homeless and poor in a medium-sized, rust-belt city. They engage in food distribution, emergency housing, advocacy and assistance with welfare, utility companies, landlords, chemical dependency, medical problems, veteran benefits etc. It was founded by Sr. Grace Miller who spontaneously began handing out surplus food to people out of the back of her car in 1985. She eventually received funding …
Chapter Four Synthesis, Apperception And The Opacity Of Consciousness: A Nietzschean Reading Of Kant’S A Deduction And Prelude To A Theoretical Account Of The Relation Between The Two Systems Of Reason, Richard Lara
Richard Louis Lara
In the first and fourth speeches of Zarathustra titled "Three Metamorphoses of the Spirit" and “The Despisers Of The Body,” Nietzsche articulates his own views on themes central to Kant’s theoretical philosophy. In so doing, he articulates two systems of reason: consciousness or "little" reason, which he conceptualizes in the same way that Kant conceptualizes theoretical reason, and "the great reason of the body." The goal of this chapter is to present a faithful reading of Kant’s A deduction of the pure a priori categories of the understanding that will serve as the basis of my effort, in subsequent chapters, …

Defining The Feminine Impact On The Progression Of Japanese Language: An Inquiry Into The Development Of Heian Period Court Diaries, Michele Gibney
Defining The Feminine Impact On The Progression Of Japanese Language: An Inquiry Into The Development Of Heian Period Court Diaries, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
From the split of the private and public lives of gender divides, men lived on the outside imbibing Chinese language styles, while women on the inside established and preserved a uniquely Japanese form of language. This paper asserts the theory that the Heian period was one of the first times in which the schism was produced through the female’s power to embody a written language which the Japanese could claim as their own independently of the effect from other cultures. In its focus this paper aspires to analyze the public/private, male/female origins by placing them within the Heian period, from …
