Why Thoughts Are Better Than Music Or Emily Dickinson's Fascicle 18 As A Lyric Sequence, Robert Bray
Why Thoughts Are Better Than Music Or Emily Dickinson's Fascicle 18 As A Lyric Sequence, Robert Bray

Recently, an old argument concerning the existence of God has made a comeback: the "Argument from Design." Some scientists, physicists and biologists especially, have declared that the cosmos, from tiniest micro to uttermost macro, not only reveals a design, but one so complex as to be impossible by accident, hence entailing a designer. From perceived real design they infer an imperceptible ideal designer-God the Creator. Invert this and you have the position in which I find myself while studying Emily Dickinson's "fascicles" (a frankly ugly and pseudo-technical name for a beautiful phenomenon in poetry). The physical evidence of the sewn, …

Victorian Cyprus: Society And Institutions In The Aftermath Of The Anglo-Turkish Convention, 1878-91, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Victorian Cyprus: Society And Institutions In The Aftermath Of The Anglo-Turkish Convention, 1878-91, Kyriakos N. Demetriou
Kyriakos N. Demetriou
The essay brings to light neglected and widely unknown sources on Cyprus from the late Victorian period and fills a literary and bibliographical lacuna in this respect. The account on Cyprus is here informed by the keen and critical eye of the Victorian politician, scholar, traveller, or ambitious businessman, and no consistent use is made of public records and documents. Of their works, some were compiled chiefly from already existing sources but some were noticeably fascinating and essential guides for those interested in finding out more about contemporary Cyprus. It cannot be overlooked that nineteenth-century Britain was a journalising society. …

Women, Technology, And Rural Life: Some Recent Literature, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg
Pamela Riney-Kehrberg
Historical study of American farm women has had a relatively short life, reaching back approximately twenty years. Rural women rarely existed in earlier scholarship that reserved the categories of farmer and farming for males. Agricultural history thus manifested itself as a story of men and their tools, stretching back historiographically into the early days of the 20th century. Although in 1953 Jared van Wagenen described in careful detail many of the physical processes of farming in The Golden Age of Homespun, the women's work from which he derived his title occupied less than twenty pages at the end of his …
Anticipating The Brethren: The Reverend Charles Nisbet Critiques The French Revolution, David Robson
Anticipating The Brethren: The Reverend Charles Nisbet Critiques The French Revolution, David Robson
David W. Robson
Charles Nisbet, a Presbyterian minister who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1785 from Scotland, spoke out against the French Revolution long before other American clergy. Nisbet believed the American Revolution had created democratic excesses that threatened the American religious, political, and social hierarchy, and feared the same would happen in France, and eventually the rest of Europe and Great Britain. Although he came to America impressed with the revolutionary spirit of the people and leaders, Nisbet quickly became disillusioned with religious and social attitudes influenced by uncontrolled democracy and the preference for autonomy over deference to leaders like himself. Although American …

Rarely does contemporary film offer any zippy ephemera to grace the office doors of medievalists, since film-makers like Quentin Tarantino do not often look to our discipline's corpus for inspiration. Imagine, then, the mix of incredulity and delight we two professors felt while taking in the pawn-shop scene in Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. After being painfully violated--anally raped, to be precise--and then rescued in a most chivalric manner by one of his minions, Marsellus Wallace swears an oath to Zed, his "hillbilly boy" rapist: "I'm gonna git Medieval on your ass" (Pulp Fiction 131). What? we thought: "Medieval"? Why, we asked, …

The Little Rock Crisis And Foreign Affairs: Race, Resistance, And The Image Of American Democracy, Mary L. Dudziak
The Little Rock Crisis And Foreign Affairs: Race, Resistance, And The Image Of American Democracy, Mary L. Dudziak
Mary L. Dudziak
When President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent federal troops to Little Rock, Arkansas to enforce a school desegregation order at Central High School in the fall of 1957, more than racial equality was at issue. The image of American democracy was at stake. The Little Rock crisis played out on a world stage, as news media around the world covered the crisis. During the weeks of impasse leading up to Eisenhower's dramatic intervention, foreign critics questioned how the United States could argue that its democratic system of government was a model for others to follow when racial segregation was tolerated in …
