Religion And Morality: The Forgotten Lesson Of George Washington's Farewell Address, Kenneth P. Schell
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
This paper attempts to show that there is a forgotten lesson of religion and morality found in Washington’s Farewell Address. Like many of the Founders, George Washington believed that a government established as a republic could only stand if the people were virtuous. The works of many modern historians use a traditional two lesson narrative to explain the significance of Washington’s Farewell Address. The lesson is that the nation should be wary of entangling political alliances and the growing spirit of political factions. In the mid-1800's many Germans emigrated to the United States. It was a new world to them. Traugott Bromme, one of their fellow countrymen who had traveled to the United States, came upon the idea of writing a handbook for emigrants. This book, which went through a number of editions, described each state in the hope that arriving Germans who spoke little or no English would not be at a complete loss regarding the most suitable place for them to settle. This research article raises the question of whether religion can be considered a viable partner in the reduction of the high rate of recidivism associated with the increasing mass incarceration in the United States. Can sustainable transformation in the life of a prisoner or former prisoner as a result of religious conversion be subjected to evidenced-based practices to derive impartial conclusions about the value of religion in their lives? With a particular focus on three neighborhoods of Boston—Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan—this study examines the relevance of religion and faith-based organizations in lowering the high rate of recidivism associated with incarceration …

This article offers an example of work-in-progress on a significant project to develop an historical atlas of Maine. Although an article depicting religious settlement in Maine may seem far removed from the policy analyses typically featured in the journal, religious participation is a fundamental aspect of civic engagement in the United States. Thus, we feature here a glimpse of Maine’s religious heritage. The earliest European settlers in today's Adams county were basically a religious people.
