In some respects this month's Concordia Theological Monthly is a continuation of the issue for December 1964, which was prepared in advance to appear at the time of the observance of the 125th anniversary of the founding of Concordia Seminary. The essays presented now represent a selection of the papers and addresses given at the annual celebration on 8 and 9 December 1964.

It is a privilege to bring greetings, very special greetings, from my institution, the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, to Concordia Seminary on this its 125th anniversary. There has been a long, intimate, and friendly relationship between these two institutions. I am not certain of the number, but I was informed that seven PhDs from the University of Chicago are on the present Concordia faculty. In addition to men holding degrees, a substantial number of the present Concordia faculty have taken courses at the University of Chicago. In response to the 1962 All-Asia Conference of missions affiliated with The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, the Synod in convention in Cleveland, Ohio, encouraged the Board for World Missions to "upgrade its seminaries" in Asia and to "bring recommendations on the establishment of a graduate seminary in the Orient to the next convention of the Synod" (Resolution 2-22, 1963 Proceedings, p.98). From where I sit, I see many critical issues in Christian education. For as a professor at Yale, I see all the winds of the future that blow through our hallowed halls. As editor of Religious Education, I know what is going to be published in the next six months by Christians and Jews. As a director of Christian education in a local congregation, I am aware of what is actually going on among the faithful. This perspective governs much of what I shall say.
