The Integral Nature Of Worship And Evangelism: Insights From The Wesleyan Tradition, Paul W. Chilcote Jan 2006

The Integral Nature Of Worship And Evangelism: Insights From The Wesleyan Tradition, Paul W. Chilcote

The Asbury Journal

This essay explores the fundamental relationship between worship and evangelism through the lens of the hymns and writings of Charles Wesley. After laying a biblical foundation for the integral nature of worship and evangelism based upon Acts 2:46-47 and examining the image of paideia (instruction through action) in Heb. 12:9-10 as a concept implying their integration, the author describes the liturgy of the worshiping community as the primary matrix of evangelistic ministry. The call of the prophet Isaiah (6:2-8) reveals a paradigm related to worship that instructs our understanding of evangelism as well. All true worship and faithful evangelism begins …

Charles Wesley's Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit: A Vital Resource For The Renewal Of Methodism Today, Jason E. Vickers Jan 2006

Charles Wesley's Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit: A Vital Resource For The Renewal Of Methodism Today, Jason E. Vickers

The Asbury Journal

This essay is an extended argument in favor of a recovery of a robust doctrine of the Holy Spirit in Wesleyan-Methodist theology today The argument develops in five stages. First, it shows the significance of the person and work of the Holy Spirit in Charles Wesley's understanding of revelation, the atonement, purification, sanctification and the like. Second, it suggests that contemporary Wesleyan theologians have often ceased attributing these things to d1e presence and work of the Holy Spirit, opting to attribute them in a generic way to grace instead. Third, it provides a conceptual analysis of the difference between the …

Charles Wesley And The Language Of Evangelical Experience: The Poetical Hermeneutic Revisited, John R. Tyson Jan 2006

Charles Wesley And The Language Of Evangelical Experience: The Poetical Hermeneutic Revisited, John R. Tyson

The Asbury Journal

Charles Wesley is well remembered as the "poet laureate" of Methodism, whose rousing hymns continue to adorn Christian worship. This article suggests that he was also a significant theologian; a theologian of the experimental variety, who used religious experience as a means for translating theological doctrine into the realm of Christian life. Religious experience played an important role in Wesley's poetical approach to the Bible, and allowed him to unite human hearts and minds in biblical affirmations. In this sense, Charles's hymns were aptly described (by John Wesley) as "practical divinity." A close examination of Charles Wesley's vocabulary of religious …

A Christian Response To Islam: Is Islam A Peaceful Religion?, Steven E. Tsoukalas

The Asbury Journal

The following is a lecture delivered on 6 October 2005 as part of the Theta Phi Lecture Series at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky As a Christian response to Islam, it covers several topics in relatively brief fashion. In the evangelistic encounter, the goal of which is a holistic encounter, the Christian must keep in mind the social-religious dynamics ofMuslims and incorporate this knowledge into a missiologically healthy approach that is built on a sound epistemological foundation. In short, for both a Christian response to Islam and evangelism of Muslims, Christians must possess a solid epistemology as foundational to "a …

The Third Moment Of Muslim Witness: John Wesley Had It Right, Terry C. Muck Jan 2006

The Third Moment Of Muslim Witness: John Wesley Had It Right, Terry C. Muck

The Asbury Journal

The following is a lecture delivered on 8 October 2005 as part of the Theta Phi Lecture Series at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky. The author suggests that the mission task can be helpfully seen as comprising four moments: the moments of (1) difference, (2) identity, (3) relationship, and (4) witness. Although Christian witnesses have performed admirably well on moments one, two, and four, the reason the Muslim world remains Muslim can be traced to our failures in regard to the third, the Moment of Relationship. Using two sermons by John Wesley, Sermon 63, "The General Spread of the Gospel" …
