The Reality Of Humiliation: A Reflection, Jonathan Schott

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"There are many factors that have played a role in the decrease of privacy in the United States today. Since the attacks on September 11, 2001, we as Americans have experienced a widening increase of governmental restrictions, searches, and inquiries that are set in place to insure our future security against terrorist threats. Coupled with this official state entrance into our privacy we also have been subject to deeper invasions privacy from the public sector. We now hunger to see into peoples’ personal lives and to live vicariously through …

Faith In Health And Health In Life, Sarah M. Piston Dec 2004

Faith In Health And Health In Life, Sarah M. Piston

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"It is all too common that people must learn to cope with the knowledge that a loved one is fighting a potentially deadly disease. The advancements of modern medicine, while helping to heal the body, oftentimes neglect the emotional and psychological effects an affliction has on the patient as well as his family and friends. Faith and religion of any sort can be an incredibly effective tool in dealing with such a distressing situation; not as a salve for the physical pain, but in addressing the emotional wounds that …

All Part Of God's Plan?, Michael Galpin Dec 2004

All Part Of God's Plan?, Michael Galpin

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"My whole life, my parents have always sent me to a catholic school. Ever since I can remember, I have had God in my life. What I was taught when I was young and impressionable, was that God is always with me, looking out for me and making sure I do the right thing, much like a father figure. I received all my sacraments, never asking any questions about the God that I believe in, the God that I was taught to believe in. It might sound naïve, but …

Living With Other Gods, Kristina Braell Dec 2004

Living With Other Gods, Kristina Braell

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I genuflect in the darkened sanctuary of my church and slide into a cool pew. With a low thud the kneeler hits the floor and I kneel in prayer, concentrating on the blood-red flame of the candle. Christ is in this place, it whispers. Even the silence seems to listen as the answers to my prayers stream through the myriad-colored windows that drench me in richly stained light. I close my eyes, pray for guidance, and just think. God will not mind, and I smile to myself. Outside lies …

From Abraham To Jacob: Promise And Fulfillment, Linda Wert Dec 2004

From Abraham To Jacob: Promise And Fulfillment, Linda Wert

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Since the beginning of time, God has had a special relationship with humans. After the creation of the heavens and the earth, God bestowed the rule of the land and sea to His most favored creation, man. Although Adam and Eve sinned against God, He still bestowed favor on them. He banished them from the Garden of Eden for their sin but gave them clothing (Genesis 3:21). When Cain killed Abel, God banned Cain from the land of his parents but put a mark upon him that he not …

Living With Other Gods, Quratulain Majoka Dec 2004

Living With Other Gods, Quratulain Majoka

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"America the melting pot,” how many times have we heard this remark, yet it is so true. It is a diverse melting pot of many people, cultures, and religions. Diversity can lead either to intolerance or to acceptance. It is up to us, as Homo sapiens, or wise humans to accept the latter. This however comes with a challenge, for we are compelled to defend ourselves in the face or ignorance and cruelty. We live in a very complex country and time, yet we face the same problems that …

The 10 Commandments, James L. Smith Jr. Dec 2004

The 10 Commandments, James L. Smith Jr.

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In the Qur’ān, there is not a list of commandments such as we see in the Bible; however, there are many injunctions throughout the text of the Qur’ān. From these, Caeser E. Farah extracts a list of 10 “commandments” in his book, Islam. When comparing these Islamic commandments with the Judeo-Christian 10 Commandments, we can see some obvious similarities, some subtle differences and some commandments that don’t even compare."

Fire In The Soul Of Zurga: Bizet's The Pearl Fishers And Male Sati, Lori Dabbagh Dec 2004

Fire In The Soul Of Zurga: Bizet's The Pearl Fishers And Male Sati, Lori Dabbagh

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Although in recent years Georges Bizet’s “other” opera, Les Pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers), has been performed on occasion, scant attention has been paid to it, compared to his world-renowned masterpiece Carmen. Even those who are not avowed opera goers have at least heard of the Habañera (L’amour est un oiseau rebelle) and more so, the ever-popular Toreador Song. Bizet penned The Pearl Fishers at age 25, and enthusiasts of this early work praise the “freshness of inspiration” which contributes to its “perennial success.” (9). …

Faith- It Is…, Tony Gravitte May 2004

Faith- It Is…, Tony Gravitte

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Faith—it is everywhere around us, a part of us, a gift from God. By providing my personal definition of faith, enunciating pertinent details, and explicating my experiences, I hope to paint an accurate picture of what faith is. Denotatively, faith is the “theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will” (“Faith”). To be critical, what is meant by “secure?” What is defined as “God’s will?” These are all good questions and each subject to controversy. Consequently, I have connotatively come to know …

The Meaning Of Lent, Courtney Ren May 2004

The Meaning Of Lent, Courtney Ren

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"For many of us the time of the year has come to participate in the celebration of Lent. For most Catholics, Lent means giving up something they enjoy, doing something good, and not eating meat on Fridays. Some see it as a waste and hate to make the sacrifice. But Lent is a special celebration. Ash Wednesday begins Lent. Ash Wednesday is significant because the placing of ashes on the forehead is a sign of humility before God; a symbol of mourning and sorrow at the death that sin …

"Leveiya": The Process Of The Jewish Funeral Service, Jennifer Hitchcock

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I have been interested in religion for most of my life. Attending a private Catholic elementary school, high school, and now a college in the Catholic tradition has helped to fuel this interest. I am a Roman Catholic, so naturally I know a great deal about my own religion, but the religions that I like to learn about the most are those other than my own. I find the many different religions and the different aspects within the religions fascinating."

Catholic Priests As Counselors: An Examination Of Challenges Faced And Successful Techniques, Mary Mchale

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Today’s Catholic priest plays a number of roles. He is expected to live a life similar to that of Jesus by setting an example as a leader, a helper, and a healer. Part of his job as a helper is to provide pastoral counseling services to parishioners and members of the public. Within this context, the Catholic priest must employ his knowledge of the Bible and spirituality to help individuals overcome such problems as depression, anxiety, marriage and family conflicts, and drug and alcohol abuse (see Worthington, Kurusu, McCollough, …
