Johannah Burdin shares her story as a lesbian/queer woman experiencing southern Maine in the 1990s. Her story touches on topics involving coming out, relationships, a traumatic incident that left her disabled, activism, and much more. She was active in her youth in spreading awareness on the AIDS/HIV crisis, education on safe sex, and spent her evenings at popular Portland gay bars, like Sister’s Bar and Limelight/The Underground. For this assignment, I wanted to tell a story of a girl unraveling the stories of the abandon kingdom she's entering. I went a surreal, atmospheric theme for this playlist so I can capture the curios yet ominous journey that the character is about to face. The song that I choose to reflect the illustration was White Palace by Christopher Larkin. The setting has a monochromatic scheme of grays while the character had dulled out colors to show that she's out of place. The character is about to cross the bridge, making her way towards the palace.

Jim Neal is a 65 year old gay man born and raised in Galesburg, Illinois. Following his parents’ divorce at age 7, he moved with his mother and brother into their grandmother’s home. Neal discusses how, throughout his childhood, he witnessed predatory men in positions of power abusing boys; this served to inform his early perception of homosexuality. Those experiences also presented an internal struggle for Jim Neal between his own identity as a gay man and his perception of adult gay men. Art therapy has been shown to be effective in treating mental health condition such as depression. A student’s academic success heavily depends on treating their depression. The zine was provided with permission of the artist and publisher Laura Migliorino. An art exhibit of the photographs was exhibited in the Winona State University Darrell W. Krueger Library October 2023 through December 2023.

Literary figures F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald make an appearance in this wry work calling to mind the Sunday comics of Winsor McCay. The Prohibition era story is told with a modern twist, as characters drink from juice boxes. Their heads are drawn as speech bubbles as a commentary on how we are all our thoughts and words/actions.

Playing with sight gags and double-entendre, this comic refers to James Branch Cabell's own response to New York Society for the Suppression of Vice censor John S. Sumner. Cabell wrote a satirical fable called "The Judging of Jurgen," featuring a tumblebug, or dung beetle, who made accusations against King Jurgen in the court of Philistia.

The concept of power has been evident throughout Byzantine culture, whether in its aristocratic and bureaucratic politics, textiles, architecture, or minted coinage. Consequently, the arts were frequently utilized to represent imperial and religious power with various renderings of symbols, colors, and icons. In addition, images portrayed significant visual and spiritual value as the viewers looked to them for knowledge, guidance, and prayer. The ruling emperors were held in high regard, and imperial families were dominant over Byzantine society. Coinage was an effective tool for representing imperial power in the Byzantine Empire. This short essay focuses on the evolution of power representation in coinage and argues that Byzantine emperors displayed power by employing classical Roman elements in their coinage. This argument is communicated through a chronological comparison of five coins ranging in date from 288 to 1425 C.E. These coins are a small example of the transition from imperial iconography to Christian iconography in which we see how classical forms are preserved even among a drastic change in style and narrative.

In this essay, I argue that the Vienna Genesis influenced future Christian manuscripts by pushing the idea that higher status and holiness were linked. The Vienna Genesis' expensive creation and classically-influenced illustrations, which were seen by some as conspicuous, would be imitated by the Paris Psalter, only differentiating in the subject matter. The Melisende Psalter would take a turn in its style, mimicking Byzantine icons rather than classical works, but it continued the high-cost production and ruler-appealing narrative of King David. And unlike the other two, the Melisende Psalter cements the initial bias, with signs hinting at possible royal/imperial ownership.

The material legacy of medieval Byzantium is one of intricate luxury objects made of precious materials. As was evident in many cultures and periods, including the Byzantine, high-quality luxury materials were used to promote the status of individuals and institutions. The Attarouthi Treasure out of the Church of St. Stephen in Syria presents an excellent case study of luxury liturgical objects used to promote the social status of the church, as well as imbed the church in a series of complex social networks that both enhanced and retracted from the church’s social role.
