Today, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911) is best known for a handful of her novels: The Gates Ajar (1868), The Silent Partner (1871), and The Story of Avis (1877). During her life, however, the short story was a hugely popular genre in which she was fully invested and where she made a good deal of her living. Stories were her earliest and latest publications, and they were work that she both enjoyed and employed to greater ends. 30% of abortions were reported to have been performed on married women. 58% of the abortions performed on Nevada residents were chemical abortions. In 2019, Clark County had the highest volume of abortions performed resident women, accounting for 87% of the abortions performed on Nevada residents. 95% of the abortions reported in Nevada in 2019 were performed on state residents. 91% percent of women in Nevada live in counties with at least one abortion provider. Nevada had a total of 8,578 abortions reported by women who had previous births (2020). Nevada had a total of 8,557 abortions reported by women …

To understand Addams’s texts, readers need to attend both to her evolutionary methodologies and to her interpretive strategies. Addams was an evolutionary scientist and sociologist in the days before natural selection became merged with genetics and before sociology adopted a stance of positivistic objectivity. Like other intellectuals at the nineteenth century’s turn, Addams addressed contemporary social problems by locating them within their evolutionary histories and proposing ways of moving society toward healthy equilibrium. She used specific social theories as tools, selecting the ones best suited for each given social problem. Evolutionary theorizing served as foundation and framing for her writings. …
