The Airplane As A Factor In Modern Transportation, Robert Fenix Jan 1934

The Airplane As A Factor In Modern Transportation, Robert Fenix

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper was planned with the object of covering the history and development of air transportation from its incep- tion to the present time. The mythology concerning aviation has been taken up at the beginning and this has been followed by a discussion of the earliest experiments in flying. The activities of the Wright Brothers began about 1900 and in 1909 they sold the Wright Flyer" to the United States Govern- ment. The development of pre-war and wartime airplanes is next taken up.

The World War was significant in airplane history. During this period airplanes were improved tremendously, because of …

Captain Charles Maria Weber, Pioneer, J. T. Aungst Jan 1934

Captain Charles Maria Weber, Pioneer, J. T. Aungst

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

I have chosen to portray the life of a man about whom no book has been written. His very name is known to few outside of San Joaquin County, yet his part in laying the foundation for an American California, and developing a goodly portion of it, was considerable.

NOTE: The copy of this thesis was poor and difficult to scan. We apologize for the quality of the text.

The Ethical Criteria Apparently Assumed As Valid By Various Economic Theories Of Wages, Herbert L. Abbott Jan 1934

The Ethical Criteria Apparently Assumed As Valid By Various Economic Theories Of Wages, Herbert L. Abbott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is eminently logical that the bare first word of this essay should be as to the philosophical motive that makes it appear interesting and fruitful. If we let two circles represent, respectively, the fields of ethics and economics, it seems probable that they will somehow intersect, providing an area common to both. It is this presumptive borderland of ethics and economics that we intend to study under conditions of restricted method and scope. It should be confessed at once that our efforts will be necessarily and rigorously theoretical, our essay is one of partial clarification of the ethical character …

The History Of The Owens Valley And The Los Angeles Water Controversy, Richard C. Wood Jan 1934

The History Of The Owens Valley And The Los Angeles Water Controversy, Richard C. Wood

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was not written for the purpose of condemning the city of Los Angeles. The author has lived in the valley since 1918 and has been present during the period of conflict. Perhaps, for this reason, he is not qualified to judge the actions of the city. But the conclusions that have been made criticizing Los Angeles, the author sincerely believes, have come as a result of the investigation necessary to write this paper.

Even if it is granted that the criticisms are inspired by prejudice, if the reader accepts the facts presented in this thesis, or investigates the …

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm Jan 1934

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The contributions of the Mediaeval Miracle Play to that of the Passion Play of Oberammergau are like those of a parent to a child. Life and form have been inherited but the development has gone far beyond the origin. Yet certain elements have continually been preserved in this same form and life

The material for the story of the Oberammergau Play was in the Mediaeval Miracle Play. In both cases the dramatic climax was reached on Good Friday with the gospel of our Lord's death upon the cross. Christ's entry into Jerusalem, the story of His birth, His active career, …

Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack Jan 1934

Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two thousand high school students in Wisconsin were tested recently in reading; one-third of them tested as sixth grade or below in reading ability.1 One of the most difficult problems confronting the schools of America today is "How shall we make good readers of our students?" That no educators are satisfied with the reading accomplishments in our schools is attested by the great number of articles on reading that appear in current periodicals and educational journals and by the increasing number of books on reading that are being published. So great is the flood on technical treatises on the …

A Search For A Universally Valid Criterion As A Basis For Musical Criticism, Allan Bacon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The object of this thesis is neither to prove nor to disprove any specific theory or theories, but to conduct an impartial investigation into the fields of musical history and of musical criticism, and to allow such facts as may be ascertained to speak for themselves. Any conclusions reached will be only such as actual facts appear to warrant or to justify.

A History Of Elko, Nevada : A Frontier Town, 1868-1890, Lester W. Mills Jan 1934

A History Of Elko, Nevada : A Frontier Town, 1868-1890, Lester W. Mills

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to present in brief form, far too brief for the wealth of material available, an account of the history of the town of Elko, Nevada. There has been no attempt to include in these pages all the interesting events which are traditional in the gossip of the town. Every effort has been made to include only such material as can be readily verified either by the memories of those still living who remember the events or, in cases where this has bailed or there has been an evident conflict of stories, by resort to …
