Echoes Of Harlem: Selective Realism In Blues For An Alabama Sky, Grant Mcgee, Ruben Monsivais, Maddie Watkins, Drake Willis

Undergraduate Research Conference

Blues for an Alabama Sky is about a family of friends struggling with materialistic themes such as the Great Depression and the economic hardship that came after the Harlem Renaissance. As designers, Blues for an Alabama Sky is a play where it's important to show the black experience during the Great Depression and the Harlem Renaissance, create a space the audience feels they can relate closely to, and help the audience feel the emotion and the characters' need to escape from, or succeed out of, their current environment.

The Great Gatsby Graphic Novel’S Illustrator Aya Morton’S Admiration Of Vincent Van Gogh And Company, Sarah Cisco

Undergraduate Research Conference

I chose to study F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby alongside Aya Morton's recent graphic novel adaptation. As scholars have noted the influence that modernist art had on Fitzgerald's writing style, I explored the influence that — impressionists and post-impressionist artists — had on Morton's renditions.

1860'S Clothing In America, Lynna Levin Apr 2022

1860'S Clothing In America, Lynna Levin

Undergraduate Research Conference

My research focused on the Crinoline period which was a transitional period between the Romantic and Bustle Period. In addition, I explored clothing of slaves, and clothing during the American Civil War. There were clothing variations depending on wealth, class, and location. The most notable changes of this period were the use of the crinoline and Civil War uniforms. The transition of art from Romanticism to Realism and Impressionism illustrates the transition in clothing from flowy and delicate to that of a stiff and structured style.

The Gilded Cage, Megan Bynum Apr 2022

The Gilded Cage, Megan Bynum

Undergraduate Research Conference

My process begins with an idea, the content of the piece. The Gilded Cage depicts human beings’ tendency to recede within - or “cage” - themselves when faced with the world’s perceived afflictions and villains. However, in doing this, they are also kept from life’s splendor. The Gilded Cage is an installation work that creates an atmosphere. I used cage iconography and imagery to convey the intangible space which people construct as internal spaces of protection. The metallic luster and sumptuousness of the liquid gold leaf juxtaposed against the blood-red microcrystalline wax enhances the piece’s tension and duality. The gilding …

Connecting Old Techniques With New Ideas, Brendan Ryan Apr 2022

Connecting Old Techniques With New Ideas, Brendan Ryan

Undergraduate Research Conference

Metalworking is an ancient field that provides numerous methods to create a similar outcome. This semester I’ve been studying several traditional techniques in jewelry making while attempting to incorporate my own designs. The techniques that I have been focusing on are casting and stone-setting. For casting, I have been experimenting with both lost-wax casting and sand-casting in order to create thoughtful, one-of-a-kind works. Casting is often the best method to use when creating organic designs. My designs include snakes and historic Viking imagery that is often easier to create by carving wax and manipulating sand molds.

The inclusion of precious …

Tuneless Song: A Poetic Form Proposal, Rae Bynum Apr 2022

Tuneless Song: A Poetic Form Proposal, Rae Bynum

Undergraduate Research Conference

The Problem

I recently asked some of my fellow poets what the purpose of poetry is to them. The consensus? Sharing experience and meaning with the reader. But what is the point of sharing these ideas if there is no one with whom to share? Poetry readers are dwindling in numbers for two main reasons: the first being that most people believe poetry to be elitist because they have only read poetry from the periods where this was true; the second reason is that “poetry” is widely available to the common person in the form of music. The form I …

Mexican Folklorico And The Costumes Thereof, Gabrielle Trevino Apr 2022

Mexican Folklorico And The Costumes Thereof, Gabrielle Trevino

Undergraduate Research Conference

Folk dance appears around the world and much of the time what these performers wear becomes the most famous image of a nation or country. Mexico folklorico spans throughout the nation. Its regions are home to a variety of iconic looks that vary even more so within each subculture. The image of the many folk dresses of Mexico is unmistakable and rooted in both the indigenous cultures and the colonial Spanish ties of the nation, both of which can still be visually traced back today in modern folklorico. In no way are the following examples a comprehensive list of the …

"Sole And Separate": The Progression Of Married Women's Property Rights In The State Of Mississippi, Margarete (Maggie) Ellis

Undergraduate Research Conference

While Not known for progressive politics, Mississippi was a leader in Married Women’s Property Rights, passing the first law of the same title in 1839. Mississippi Women were then able to retain their own property after marriage. Prior to this law, the United States utilized a common law system that relegated women to a state of Coverture, which rendered women civilly dead. While there is debate about the extent to which this law should be understood to be a Women’s Rights initiative, it set the stage for an interesting series of events in Columbus. Laura Young Whitfield, an heir-at-law of …
