Transpods: Mobile Senior Living Community Design, Zihang Diao

Theses - ALL

On a daily basis, as individuals retire, they often reevaluate their housing needs as they search for opportunities to accommodate their new lifestyle. At the same time, the idea of doing more-with-less is becoming increasingly popular. Existing literature shows that tiny homes have been found to address the needs of a wide range of individuals. They also alleviate excessive construction costs and address the problem of mortgage /debt management. However, the current literature also shows there is a gap in that a large percentage of tiny houses have not yet been designed to meet the needs of an aging population. …

Yours Truly: And Other Ways Of Saying I'M Still Here Under The Rubble Of This Exploded Building, Stephen James Farrell

Theses - ALL

In my digital painting, Mount Culling, 2019, a mound of objects sits on a pile of white rocks that protrudes from a watery plane. The surface of the plane stretches back to the horizon. The head of a bull in the center, a broken-down van with its rear end ripped off sits as if crashed on the rocks. A man’s head, eyes closed in restful repose is large and sculpture like, making the other objects seem like toys. The head is an industrial hue of orange-yellow on the edge of the rocks half sunk into a black and oil slick, …

Untitled, Eric Mowen

Theses - ALL

This thesis is a product of my attempt to discover why I make art. The intent is not to define a specific work or body of work, but rather to explore the personal context that informs my decision-making process. The writing style and tone are as much a reflection of my artistic inclinations as are the actual topics I have chosen to address. Much of this thesis is not serious, because much of the time I am not a serious person. A portion of this thesis is quite serious, and I hereby formally apologize for that fact.

Theses - ALL

This paper focuses on the use of the term “moderate” “moderacy” as a term applied to categorize some Chinese intellectuals and categorize their political positions throughout the 1920’s and 30’s. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the label of “moderate” (温和 or 温和派)became associated with an inability to align with a political or intellectual faction, thus preventing progress for either side or in some cases, advocating against certain forms of progress. Cross-Linguistic Transfer In The L2 Learning Of Spatial Concepts, Azusa Tojo May 2020

Cross-Linguistic Transfer In The L2 Learning Of Spatial Concepts, Azusa Tojo

Theses - ALL

Previous research has demonstrated persistent difficulties in learning spatial expressions in a second language (L2) (Ahlberg et al., 2018; Ijaz, 1986; Jarvis & Odlin, 2000; Mukattash, 1984; Munnich & Landau, 2010; Park & Ziegler, 2014). Recent studies have suggested that these difficulties may come from the learners' native language (L1) spatial conceptual systems, which remain persistent and influence conceptualization in second language acquisition (Ahlberg et al., 2018; Coventry & Garrod, 2004; Jarvis, 2016). Through a combination of triad picture matching and description tasks, the present study examined whether conceptual transfer is involved in L2 learning of Japanese spatial expressions among …

Placing, stuffing, wrapping and covering are all potential applications of my material of choice, used bed sheets. I recognize the direct result of the involvement of my body in motion. I construct work that is …

The Cadillac Of Hot Glue Guns: On Replicating Objects For Still Life Using The 3d Pen And 3d Printer, Charles Hickey

Theses - ALL

The act of reproduction results in two objects with similar visual qualities, but points to the method of fabrication for both objects: the original and the reproduction. Creating abstract shapes or representations of objects may show a similarity in the ideas of a linear visual record of movement, but reproduction innately pulls the fabrication method of the original into comparison with the fabrication method of the reproduction. To explore the dynamic between object and reproduction, I align my process to the genre of still life painting. Although my objects are three-dimensional, still life painting is my frame of reference for …

A “Wokeness” That Never Was: The Affective Economy Of White Innocence And The Possibilities Of Shame, Hannah Murray

Theses - ALL

This thesis critiques white liberal subjectivity, primarily through the work of Claudia Rankine. In Rankine’s The White Card, she critiques white liberal subjectivity through the form of a play, a space of encounter. In the case of The White Card, the play’s primary encounter appears to be about white people encountering Black people, but in actuality the encounter resides in white people encountering their own white liberal subjectivity. In order to further conceive of how white liberal subjectivity functions, I draw from Gloria Wekker’s “white innocence” and Sara Ahmed’s “affective economies” to craft the lens of an affective economy of …
