The Shape Of Things: One Director's Journey From Script To Final Dress, Lyndsay Somers Hicks

Theses

The purpose of this written thesis is to document my journey. as the director, from script to final dress rehearsal; after that the performance belongs to the actors and technical crew. During this journey I collaborated with a team of designers, artists and a mentor. I opened my mind and my experience to their expertise, leadership and artistic license. ln this documentation is my concept. my vision, my heart, and my process step-by-step resulting in the performance that I humbly present as my interpretation of Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things.

Directing Beyond The Boundaries: A Director's Journey To Personal Style In Directing Diaspora, Mary Elizabeth Wlodarczyk Jan 2011

Directing Beyond The Boundaries: A Director's Journey To Personal Style In Directing Diaspora, Mary Elizabeth Wlodarczyk

Theses

Even though, the text of Diaspora was technically "mine" in the sense that J wrote Diaspora, the play text itself became a separate creature at its completion. So the production of Diaspora was not so much my directing a play I wrote, as much as it was an agreement between me and the new text, an autonomous life. In this exacting negotiation, I had to chose where I reside on the spectrum directing philosophies, whether I would embrace complete fidelity to the text or would I see the directing process as more intuitive and flexible (Benedetti 14-15)?

The writers and …

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo Jan 2001

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo

Theses

The nucleus of my thesis will be the direction of "Suddenly Last Summer'', by Tennessee Williams. This play will be performed under my direction for The St. Charles Theatre Company on October 27 and 28, November 3 and 4, 2000. "Suddenly Last Summer'' was first introduced to the public at the York Theatre, in New York City, on January 7, 1958.

It is my intent to present my own interpretation of this play and document my process of directing it in a community theatre environment. This becomes even more interesting to me because, although the St. Charles Theatre Company has …

A Directorial Experience: Noises Off, Jennifer Lynn Forrest Apr 1996

A Directorial Experience: Noises Off, Jennifer Lynn Forrest

Theses

Over the years I have been exposed to hundreds of shows, some excellent and other's not quite as good. Few shows that I have read, seen, or been involved with seem to have the appeal to both audiences and theatre groups as that of Michael Frayn's modem farce Noises Off. There are several strong reasons for its appeal.

One of the primary reasons for the play's popularity is that it is a reaction against modem theatre's tendency toward preaching at the audience. Contemporary plays tend to teach morality; and while modern playwrights do occasionally use comedy as a vehicle …

An Experiment In Acting: Miss In Her Teens, Todd Gillenardo Jan 1996

An Experiment In Acting: Miss In Her Teens, Todd Gillenardo

Theses

The purpose of my thesis is to find ways of making Restoration characterization more natural, believable, and more realistic to a contemporary audience. In my attempt, I will study the works of David Garrick, and attempt to replicate an evening at the Drury Lane Theatre in the 18th century, by directing Miss in Her Teens, one of Garrick's comedies.

The first chapter of my thesis will explore David Garrick's natural style of acting which was revolutionizing theatre after the Restoration. He believed actors should be more natural and believable in their roles, portraying actual people in circumstances and not paper …
