Literarische Zensur Als Meinungsbildung: Zensur In Der Bundesrepublik Und Die Entwicklung Einer Neuen Wahrnehmung Der Ehemaligen Ddr, Lauren M. Davidson

Senior Theses and Projects

Germany has a long history of literary censorship. Following the Second World War and the division of Germany into the Federal Republic of Germany in the West and the German Democratic Republic in the East, both states simultaneously decried censorship in their constitutions and proceeded to unofficially censor literature. A vast amount of research and attention has focused on the censorship program of the East German Ministry for Culture. Little attention, however, has been given to censorship in West Germany, despite its critical role in the development of a new cultural identity and perception of the former East Germany. This …

What Are You Laughing At? The Comedy And Social Commentary Of Dave Chappelle, Andrew J. Fishman 5373761

Senior Theses and Projects

Coming off of the second season of his hit comedy show, Dave Chappelle was being hailed by media sources around the country as “the funniest man on television.”[1] The Chappelle Show had found a way to revolutionize sketch comedy through creative yet taboo racial sketches. The show’s wild success was closely tied to the memorable characters, ridiculous stories and the quotable lines that were produced week after week. The Chappelle Show invented many characters that became fan favorites, such as the crack addict Tyrone Biggums, Clayton Bigsby, the blind black man who was a white supremacist, and his memorable …

The Romulus And Remus Myth As A Source Of Insight Into Greek And Roman Values, Dimitri Adamidis Apr 2016

The Romulus And Remus Myth As A Source Of Insight Into Greek And Roman Values, Dimitri Adamidis

Senior Theses and Projects

The Romulus and Remus myth is a useful source of insight into Greek and Roman values, particularly in the Augustan Age. Livy, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and Diodorus Siculus, are three authors that give an account of the myth with varying extents of similarities and differences. Livy was nervous about Roman identity at the time he was writing in the Augustan Age, Dionysius tried to show how the Greeks and Romans are similar in their origins and from a cultural standpoint, and Diodorus shows how there is not one single authoritative version of a myth. The Romulus and Remus myth is …

In Buddhism, monks and nuns or bhikkhu and bhikkhuni in Pali refer to those who leave their homes to practices Buddhism and live ascetic lives with other monks or nuns. Amor Fati In Jaco Van Dormael's Film, Mr. Nobody, Rebecca L. Smith Apr 2016

Amor Fati In Jaco Van Dormael's Film, Mr. Nobody, Rebecca L. Smith

Senior Theses and Projects

The argument in this thesis is how the philosophies of the German Frederich Nietzsche are portrayed throughout the Belgian director Jaco Van Dormael’s film Mr. Nobody (2009). Mr. Nobody is a film about every imaginable way one man’s life could unfold from every major and minor decision he makes. Nietzsche’s philosophy of Amor Fati, or love of fate, is portrayed by the film’s main character, Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto). Within the different quantum branches of Nemo’s life he portrays both the man of reason and the man of intuition; a topic central to Nietzsche’s philosophy. In the various timelines in …

Lieux De Mémoire, Lieux D'Oubli: La Mémoire Et L'Espace Urbain Dans Deux Romans De Patrick Modiano, Julia Mardeusz

Senior Theses and Projects

In this paper, I examine the intersection of memory and urban space in two of Patrick Modiano's novels, Dora Bruder and Quartier Perdu. To explain their intersection in these two novels and the difference between how memory and place relate to one another in each novel, I rely on theories of how collective and individual memory are affected by urban space created by Pierre Nora and Qazi Azizul Mowla.

Les Mystères Du Surréalisme : Le Thème Du Rêve À Travers Du Lac, Buñuel Et Man Ray, Kanzy El Defrawy

Senior Theses and Projects

The surrealist movement began as a consequence of the social, economical, and political disruptions caused by World War I. Artists, poets, photographers, painters, and movie producers recognized that elements of the surrealist movement formed a medium well-matched to attain their artistic goals. The founder of the movement, André Breton, was highly inspired by the psychoanalytical techniques of Freud, while explaining theories of surrealism and dreams. In 1924, Breton defined surrealism for the first time in his book, Surrealism Manifesto, “surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of previously neglected associations, in the omnipotence of …

United In Diversity? The Political Implications Of Intra- Eu Migration, Isabel Monteleone Apr 2016

United In Diversity? The Political Implications Of Intra- Eu Migration, Isabel Monteleone

Senior Theses and Projects

Intra-EU migration is a phenomenon innate to the structure of the European Union. A politico-economic union of twenty-eight countries, the EU does what no other alliance of countries has endeavored before, serving as a unique product of globalization and integration, in every sense of the word. Bound almost entirely by a common currency, the European Union is established in the belief that economic cooperation in Europe can be achieved through the principle of free movement, despite each member states’ individual way of life, language, and political, religious, and cultural ideology.

Since intra-EU migration allows for the possibility of EU integration …

Spanish Milan, Rome, And Sardinia During 1492-1700/ Un’Italia Spagnola Durante Gli Anni 1492-1700, Guadalupe R. Hernandez

Senior Theses and Projects

Spanish Milan, Rome, and Sardinia during 1492-1700.

Nationalism has become a main focus for many countries in the last century. Countries have attempted to build up a national identity often forgetting to include the influences other countries may have had on them. Italy and Spain are often studied separately since they are two different countries now, but these countries have a long history in common. These two countries have interacted dating back to when the Roman Empire expanded and conquered Hispania. After the decline of the Roman Empire, the Spanish Empire became a leading power and would take control of …

Storia Orale Di Immigrati Italiani, Stephen A. Falcigno Apr 2016

Storia Orale Di Immigrati Italiani, Stephen A. Falcigno

Senior Theses and Projects

While growing up in an Italian family, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a different culture. I was told some of the most amazing stories about life in Italy as well as the journey it took to come to America. My grandparents, Salvatore and Lina Mangione, like many other Italian immigrants, have a remarkable story. For my thesis, I documented this story and connected it back to some of the historical data that we now have. Their story focuses on their journey to the United States including the trials and tribulations they faced. It also includes how they …

Production, Consumption, And Marketing Italian Wine Culture, Shannon Farrell Apr 2016

Production, Consumption, And Marketing Italian Wine Culture, Shannon Farrell

Senior Theses and Projects

Wine has been produced and consumed for centuries and, therefore, reflects wide ranging social and cultural practices. In my study, I recount the story of wine in Italy, from the Greek influence on southern Italian viticulture to the present. I mainly consider modern production, the market for wine, government regulations, and the publication of popular wine "guides". Using Italian wine guides, we can track the developments in production and consumption over the last twenty years, when Italian wines began to enjoy greater international favor. By focusing also on recent marketing of different regional wines, we can also see how both …

L’Impatto Dell’Isis Sulle Politiche Interne Italiane, Michael Richard Battista Jr. Apr 2016

L’Impatto Dell’Isis Sulle Politiche Interne Italiane, Michael Richard Battista Jr.

Senior Theses and Projects

I have researched how Italian domestic policies has been impacted by ISIS in recent years, in particular through the lenses of the threat of terrorism, and the refugee crisis. Recent examples include the terrorist attacks in neighboring France and Belgium, and the multilateral agreement to relocate refugees to Turkey. My two hypotheses based on my research are that the threat of terrorism has caused Italian domestic policies to become more conservative, such as attempted bans on religious iconography like the hijab, while the refugee crisis has actually caused resultant policies to become more liberal, such as the ambitious humanitarian program …

Mose: Salvare Venezia, Salvatore T. Siciliano Apr 2016

Mose: Salvare Venezia, Salvatore T. Siciliano

Senior Theses and Projects

Since 1900, the water levels in the Venetian Lagoon have risen almost 16 centimeters. In the same timeframe the city of Venice has gone from averaging 7 floods a year to over 100 in 2004 alone. It’s clear that in order for Venice to survive this problem a solution must be found. Fortunately, in 2003 MOSE (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), a network of floodgates constructed at each entrance to the lagoon that prevents flooding during high tides, finally began its long awaited construction, that today is in its final stages.

When looking at MOSE from an engineering perspective, the mechanics behind …

"I Began To Realize That I Had Some Friends:" Hardship, Resistance, Cooperation, And Unity In Hartford's African American Community, 1833-1841, Evan Turiano

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis explores Hartford's black community between 1833 and 1841, looking at the exclusion they faced and the ways in which they resisted against it, focusing on four key moments to tell this story. It seeks to use this setting as a platform to make a case for the importance, and uniqueness, of the contributions of antebellum Northern black communities to the rise of antislavery.
